With these common afflic-' lions, we've created a community community of shared discomfort and commiseration. Talking about them is downright comradely. Pneumonia and heart attacks, multiple sclerosis and cancer arc openly acknowledged and shared parts of life, no longer spoken of in hushed whispers. In fact, a person who hasn't had even a cold for years seems strange and oddly different different to the rest of us, instead of merely healthy. Not a bona fide member of the community of ordinary mortals and definitely definitely not the sort of sympathetic sympathetic person you'd want to describe describe your rotten cold to. ****** Why then don't we talk candidly candidly about emotional health problems? We don't talk about feeling depressed, sad, lonely, insecure, frightened and unhappy unhappy with anything like the same comfort and openness with which we discuss our physical side, except perhaps with close friends or counsellors. I've always been a sucker for a good grandmother myself. myself. Our down feelings are at least as universal as the common common cold. Unfortunately, just as physical disease creates common ground among us, emotional disease tends to set us apart. Being unwell physically physically is approved, so to speak, and so is being unwell emotionally, emotionally, as long it's not openly discussed. The lonely teenager, isolated isolated in his or her family, the lonely, frustrated spouse, isolated isolated in his or her own marriage marriage - these classic examples illustrate how, over time, isolation isolation and alienation can make people crazy. Without a sympathetic sympathetic ear, their loneliness deepens and their burden becomes becomes too heavy to bear. ****** We readily admit to catching catching a cold but we keep our depression depression a secret. We acknowledge acknowledge a migraine or a backache but downplay the emotional stress that may cause them. I jokingly advise my M.D. friends that they should waste less time in a vain search for the correct diagnosis of their patients' lower back pain or recurring recurring headaches. These are, I explain, mere symptoms of deeper problems, undisclosed, even undiscovered in their patients' patients' marriages - symptoms of their emotional pain that they're not yet able to speak about.
