Central 100.5 • The way in which Raghib (Rocket) Ismail left Saturday's Toronto Argonaut practice at Civic Fields in Oshawa was far different than the way in which he arrived. While a huge throng of over-eager fans mobbed the superstar out of the University of Notre Dame for autographs, a van supplied by 1050 CHUM AM Radio backed up, swung the back doors open, and rescued him. After a quick jaunt down the oval race track, the van backed up to a stairwell, opened the back doors once again, and Ismail disappeared into a tunnel leading to the dressing room. Yes indeed, much different than the limousine ride he enjoyed just a couple of hours earlier. The limousine brought both him and quarterback Matt Dunigan from the Wayne Gretzky celebrity slo- pitch game in Brantford. So went the afternoon as the Argos appeared before before the public for the first time this year, unveiling new hopefuls, and allowing the first glimpse many have been able to get of Ismail. But fans of the Double Double Blue will have to wait another day to see just what kind of an athlete Ismail is. It was obvious from the time he stepped onto the field that a pulled leg muscle would prevent him from participating in any of the drills. It wasn't a noticeable limp that gave it away. Rather, the wrist watch he wore was a good indication he wouldn't be involved in any contact drills. It was disappointing for some of the fans, who made their way down to the Civic Fields on a mug- f y afternoon, to see if all the press clippings and ighlight films they saw would come to life. One fan mumbled as he left the stadium at the conclusion conclusion of the practice that he might as well have gone to an Argos gamé because, in his opinion, it would be just as big a waste of time. This came from a guy who got in to see the practice practice for free. Admission was by donation to charity. Another comment came from a man standing along the sidelines as the players made their way onto the field for the start of the two-hour practice. He's not very big and there really isn't a whole lot to him, he said, in reference to tne Argo super- star. His buddy nodded in agreement. But the popularity and excitement that the Rocket Rocket has brought also has its downfalls for the rest of the club. Mike (Pinball) Clemons was heard at the post-practice meal in the Bobby Orr lounge joking with general manager Mike McCarthy about the mob of fans he inherited once Ismail was whisked away. With Clemons standing at five feet tall, McCarthy apologized for not rescuing him, adding that nobody could see him standing in the middle of the crowd. One player in particular caught my attention as he entered the Bobby Orr Lounge following the practice. He approached the bar and asked the bartender bartender to set him up three cans of Labatts Blue. He opened all three cans, and swiftly downed two of them without so much as taking a breath. He hoisted hoisted the third one up* and took only a mouthful. "I think I'll nurse this one," he said to me with a wink. Obviously he noticed that my bottom jaw had hit the floor in amazement. With these guys, you obviously don't insult them by offering to buy them a beer. A case, perhaps, would be less insulting. Just who is the wealthiest person to have ever appeared appeared on the sports pages of The Statesman? Although Although no official records have been kept, we'd have to consider Raghib (Rocket) Ismail - at $26 million oyer the next four years - of the Toronto Argonauts would be near the top. The 'Rocket' was at the Civic Fields in Oshawa on Saturday for a practice that was open to the public. The Darlington select mosquito team played in their first tournament of the 1991 season and came up with impressive wins over Port Hope, Peterborough, Scugog. and North Toronto to win the 'A' championship. In their first game against Port Hope, the boys looked really impressive en route to a 5-0 victory. The defence came up with a great effort, as well as solid goaltending by Jason Lange. Goal-scorers were Brent Huggins with three and Sebastian Sebastian Murdoch and John Marco Cannito with one each. Two goals came off corner corner kicks by Niki DeFreitas. Peter Paradis and John Vanderootevheari set up Brent's first goal. Brent fin- 1 ished off a passing play that involved about eight passes and may have been the best goal of the tournament. The second game against Peterborough, was easily won by Darlington, 7-1. The mid-fielders were the winners winners in this game as they completely controlled the play. Ben Tonks and Niki DeFreitas struck for two goals each, and single goals were scored by Peter Paradis, Paradis, Sebastian Murdoch and Brian Wojnarowski. Setting up the goals were Niki D. with two, and Nicky Zdrav- kovski, Brent Huggins and Sebastian Murdoch who had singles. The third game against Scugog saw Brent Huggins score the first two goals and mid-fielders Nicky Zdrav- kovski and Sebastian Murdoch Murdoch got one each in a 4-1 win. Peter Paradis, Ben Tonks and Niki DeFreitas set up the goals. Brian Wojnarowski Wojnarowski played in goal for the absent Jason Lange and looked sharp, especially on a penalty shot save. The defence defence of Greg Stevenson, Ian Robinson, Jason Hibbard, Brent Rosenboom and Peter Frisina were at their best in this game. Also playing strong was Andrew Rodmell. The stage was set for the final game against the defending defending champions, North Toronto. With the wind playing playing havoc, along with a six hour wait, the boys took a while to get going. Ben scored the first goal, set up by Sebastian M. John Marco made it 2-0 as his shot was deflected off a defender. Then, with ' only three minutes minutes left in the game, North Toronto scored to end the game at 2-1. Brian was in net again. Team members are: defence, defence, Peter Frisina, Jason Hibbard, Ian Robinson, Brent Rosenboom and Greg Stevenson; mid-field, Nicky Zdravkovski, John Marco Cannito, Andrew Rodmell, John Vanderootevhean, Sebastian Sebastian Murdoch; forwards, Ben Tonks, Niki DeFreitas, Peter Paradis, Brent Huggins. Huggins. Brian Wojnarowski S ed forward, mid-field goal. Jason Lange played goal in the first two games and allowed only one goal. The coach is Michael DeFreitas, assistant is Or- dan Zdravkovski and manager manager is Pat Lange. Way to go, Darlington!
