Her long association with Painters Eleven, the group which the Robert McLaughlin Gallery has chosen to examine, stretches back to her first lessons with Macdonald in the home of Alexandra Luke in Oshawa. Handera was a high school student at the time; only after after study at the Ontario College College of Art was she to realize the importance of Macdon- alds's methods in working automatically to generate images. These shimmering, elegant elegant paintings combine abstraction abstraction with the tangible physicality of found objects. Her shapes and gestures, filled with intention and thought, remain subtle and surprising. These are the works of. an. artist evolving, and mastering an-abstrac-- -» tionist's vocabulary. Her sensibility is poetic, highly confident, and energetic. She's constant!; with shape, and her worl seems open, yet veiled. She gives her paintings a glimmering glimmering texture, so that they read several ways at once. She's interested in the actual actual process of the work; her images, all on the verge of being, are open to a wide variety variety of interpretation. In a way, she's transforming earlier earlier work as well as refitting refitting the world around her. The exhibition is accompanied accompanied by a pamphlet with an essay by gallery Director, Joan Murray. Admission to the gallery is free.
