Street School News Hello, we're back with some more exciting news from Ontario St. School. There are some sports events, special events, and lots more great stories. We've had a great week. Our Carnaval Queen and King were Chantal Neapole ana Mark Hodgins. It was a horrible horrible day for ice sculptures. It was raining very hard for awhile, but we came through. I saw some really good sculptures out there. Our next school sport is Broomball. There are two teams. Miss Kyriaco and Miss Vinales are coaching the boys team and Miss Da- mecour is coaching the girls team. Members of the boys team are Jeremy Sanders, Chris Pot, Brent Huggins, Mark Hodgins, Brett Pakos- ta, John Vandergrootev- heen, Jake Davis, Greg Cartwright, Sebastian Murdoch, Murdoch, and Brent Roozen- boom. The two outstanding goalies are David .Leppert and Peter Paradis. Members of our girls team are Connie Chui, Devyn Pawley, Elisabeth Elisabeth King, Mandi Paquin, and Rebecca Taggart. On Feb. 14, Madame Bor- duas' grade 4/5 class had a Mexican lunch. The whole class helped prepare the food. They had a Mexican salad, guacomole, apricot cooler, and Mexican marriage marriage cake. Mmmmmmm sounds good! The contest for; French speeches was on Féb. 18. Most of the speeches were excellent. It was difficult to determine the winners. The three winners from Ontario St. School were Hei<}i Douglas, Douglas, Rebecca Archibald and Brett Pakosta. The winners went on to participate at C. R. Gummow in Coborirg. The winner from there was Heidi Douglas, Heidi will compete in Toronto at Glen- don College for the Provincial Provincial finals, oh April 13. Good Luck, Heidi. Brown introduced introduced our guest speaker, Jim Cryderman a lifelong member of our community who spoke to us on "Special Olympics". Special Olympics are for the mentally Handicapped to participate in the special Olympics organization. Its. benefits are physical im- provemènt, seii confidence, social skills so they can develop develop socially. This organization formed in 1968 by Harry "Red" Foster. Foster. Fitness improves by participation participation ana this is year round. Recreation and Tourism Tourism from the Province helps with funding but most of the funding is from corporations, corporations, private business and the organization does a lot of the funding themselves. The Sports Celebrity Breakfast in Toronto is their biggest fund raiser. There have also been golf tournaments and bingos to raise money. The participants have special uniforms when competing and are coached by people who take special courses in coaching. There are 12 regions regions in the organization and Jim is in charge of east central region. There are various levels of competition. competition. There were 625 registered registered athletes in this region this past year and most areas areas are from age 8 with no upper age limits. There is a swim club in Bowmanville. Jim was one of 4 coaches from this region that went to Vancouver for the Special Olympics this past summer. Jim closed with a short video video of the activities in Vancouver Vancouver and answered several several questions. Mrs! A. Vandergaast moved a vote of thanks to Jim and presented him with a token of our appreciation. The meeting closed with the repeating of the Collect in unison. The group in charge served sandwiches and pickles, tea and coffee during the social hour. Bowmanville W.I. Meets For Dinner The Bowmanville Women's Women's Institute met in Trinity Church Hall on March 7th for a pot luck dinner. The meeting opened with O'Canada and the Institute Ode. The roll call was answered answered with the name of a new Canadian who has enriched enriched our Community. Mrs. Emily Slute spoke on the motto - "What has Canada to offer to people from other countries" after which she introduced our speaker. Mrs. Minnie Zer- gers, who told us why she came to Canada from Holland. Holland. She told about German German occupation of Holland and how ten year old boys were sent to Germany to work in factories. She told of the depression and how her father had to move from place to place to find work, until finally a brother in Canada found work for the family here. Her only knowledge knowledge of English was "good morning ana good day."
