"There will be a lot of people here, and I hope it makes us smile better, said Paradis of the upcoming championship. "Our smiles are something we have to work on. Our parents pointed pointed that out to us after our last competition." If they weren't smiling during their performance, the duo were certainly wearing wearing huge grins after their last competition. They placed first out of seven g airs at the Eastern Ontario ectional Interclub in Belleville Belleville on March 2, which qualified them for this weekend's weekend's Provincials. "We expect to come in the top four," said a confident Paradis before hedging a little. little. "Well maybe we don't expect expect to, but we hope." "At Minden (held prior to the Belleville competition) we were in a higher category and didn't do very well. In this one (the Provincials) we're in the right category so we're expected to do well." Approximately 225 skaters skaters will converge at the Recreation Recreation Complex for the two- day event that begins on Saturday. Paradis, 11, joined the Bowmanville club four years ago, while Garrett, 12, has been a member for the past nine years. As smooth as they appear on the ice now, this wasn't a case in which they enjoyed instant success from the moment moment they were paired together. together. In fact, both skaters are very surprised that they have reached the provincial level in such a short period of time. "It's been a lot of work," said Garrett who is a grade six student at Waverley Public School. When asked to compare skating pairs as opposed to singles, she hesitated a little before choosing. - "I like pairs better. I don't get as nervous because- their are two people." But her partner says that she does, in fact, get very nervous just prior to stepping stepping on the ice. "Sometimes I know she is nervous because I can feel her hands getting really sweaty," laughed Paradis who is a grade six student at Ontario Street. Bowmanville applied to the C.S.F.A. during the 1989-90 season to host the Provincials, and received confirmation in May of'90. It's a long road for the skaters to reach this stage, as only the elite of Ontario manage to advance this far. Ontario is divided into four regions, and each of these host Interclub as well as Sectional competitions as qualifiers leading up to the Provincials. The Eastern Ontario Section, Section, of which Bowmanville is a member, held an Inter- club competition and only the first place finishers from there advanced to the Sectionals Sectionals in Belleville. Because of a lack of entries, entries, Paradis and Garrett received a bye at the Interclub Interclub and advanced to the Sectionals in ville. This weekend's Provincials Provincials will bring together the elite skaters from the Southern, Southern, Northern and Western regions of Ontario. directly Belle- The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 13,1991 9 Newcastle Skaters Claim New Badges (l-r), Jeff Carter, Scott MacDonald, Chris Watson, Jason Jason Frayne, Guy Tousignant, Ryan Winning, Scott Mackay, Brad MacMaster, Brian Ball, Josh Bonnetta, and Robbie MacChevne. Several of our skaters competed competed a Minden Meet to Skate, Pineridge Interclub at Cobourg as well as the Unicorn Fair in Oshawa. All of our skaters placed very 1 well and we are very proud of their efforts. Also in February we held our annual Skate-A-Thon which was a great success and continues to be an excellent excellent fundraiser. Many thanks to all the skaters as well as their parents for making this a fun evening. Our skaters have also been very busy working on Donohue Plays at Grant Field bv Brendan Donohue Things are going well down here. We are 3-3 in our first six games, winning the first three and losing the next three. In our first game against Tarpon Springs we were 0 hen I came to the date. I singled to get the the year for the for 5 when P first hit of school I'm batting sixth in the order against lefties and second second in the order against righties. I'm going to work on hitting right handed so that I can bat right against lefties and stay m the two spot. I have started all six games at second base and nave made no errors so far. In the first game I went two for two with a sac bunt, but I have slumped since. We played ? both Largo and Dunedin at Grant Field which was a dream come true. Being on the Blue Jays' field and in their dug- out for two games was great. My grandparents watched both games from their actual actual seats for opening game March 8. Fielding ground balls at second base at Grant Field was awesome. If Roberto Alomar Alomar can't handle it, I'm ready. I am pleased with things so far. I hope to get my bat going, though. Our pitchers are walking too many. In the last three games we have given, up 28 walks. That is why we lost all three. ' Seminoles' ;' n J[pèl Place threw a onediitter against us and Ridgewood's Dave Dorneweerd threw a one hitter hitter against us. Dave has a full ride to University of Georgia. He was throwing in the high 80's with a good curve and change. We have been labelled as a powerhouse in the area, with the best coach in the country. District and conference conference games begin this week. Pre-season is over and now comes the real stuff. I'm confident I will be playing second or short (our shortstop has eight errors in six games) all year. Hopefully Hopefully I can get my batting average average above .300. The VG Nationals captured captured top honors with a championship final 3-2 victory victory over Peterborough St. James. Like VG National, St. James came into the final with an undefeated record and the Peterborough boys took an early 2-0 lead. But with just two minutes minutes left in the first period, VG's Todd Bumstead brought his team to within one with an unassisted effort. effort. And late in the second period, Robin Milford tied the score with an assist from Todd Bumstead. The winning winning goal was a solo shot from Brandon Kettela. Meanwhile, in the VG goal, David McLinton stopped all the rubber St. James managed to shoot his way after the first period. He was particularly sharp on breakaways by St. James' star player, Mike Tisdale. VG forwards Brandon Baker and Jesse Halik both played fine games as did James Wilton, Kevin Copping, Copping, Chris DeHarais, Billy Kift and Rvan McNulty. The defensive pairings of Mike Gushulak and Adam Rate, Chris Welsh and Todd Bumstead kept opposition forwards off balance throughout the game. Each team member was awarded an individual trophy trophy and the team picked up the championship trophy from BRHL executives. VG National began their quest for the championship with a victory Saturday at Bowmanville Arena over Port Hope, 4-1. The team fell behind 1-0 early but Robbie Milford tied the score mid-way in the first period with an assist assist from Billy Kift. The Bowmanville boys went ahead for good on a goal from Todd Bumstead. Brandon Kettela salted away the victory with a pair of goals, one assisted by Ryan McNulty and the other by James Wilton. VG National's second game of the tournament pitted pitted them against Bowmanville Bowmanville rival Sports Shop led by Stephen Marsh. An early goal by Robbie Milford gave VG a 1-0 load. But it was quickly erased as Sports Shop rallied to tie and then wont ahead 2-1. VG _ battled back with goals from Todd Bumstead and Brandon Kettela on assists assists from Chris Welsh and Kevin Copping. Sports Shop then wont ahead 4-3, before Todd Bum stead scored the tying goals with just two minutes left in the game. VG went into their Sunday Sunday morning game at Darlington Darlington Arena against the Bowmanville All Canadians needing a victory to reach the final.
