Ski Jumper Flies Without Wings The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 20, 1991 ',9 Bowmanville Figure Skaters Compete at Pine Ridge Meet j by Brad Kelly ■ It's been said that the closest a human can come to flying is by becoming a ski jumper. But the fear of slapping a pair of skis on one's feet, and plummeting down a jump in excess of 90 kilometres kilometres per hour keeps many away from the sport. Not to mention the thought of soaring soaring through the air with your only protection being a helmet. But for Orono's Jeremy Blackburn, it's a fear that he has been able to overcome as a member of the Oshawa Ski Jumping Team. And he is only one of a select few who have had the thrill of flying through the air without without the help of any type of aid. "When you get over your skis and feel the air push against your chest, it's like a lift," said the 15-year-old grade 10 student at Clarke High School. "You just want to do it again and again after after you get that first jump in. It's easy to get addicted to." As much as an addiction as it may become, there is still a fear element that creeps in just prior to every jump. "It's scary when I go off the big jumps, like the 70 metre for the first time," admits admits Blackburn. "After I get the first jump in, it's not bad afterwards." In his most recent competition competition at the Calgary Olympic Olympic Park, he helped the Ontario Ontario team to a third, place finish overall. One of the members on the the Ontario team was Oshawa's Ron Richards who, coupled with Thunder Bay's Horst Biilau, make up Canada's best representatives representatives in the sport. Blackburn has been with the Oshawa team for the past four years, and has progressed progressed steadily from the days when he first took off from the 40 metre jump'.' A friend of his is credited with getting him interested in the sport. "I was just a recreational skier, but I went to watch my friend in a competition and thought I would like it," he recalled. "So I joined at. the beginning of the next year." It also helped that his mother, Joan, was suppor- tivè of his decision to give the sport a try. But even she admits to being a little afraid for her son. "I get worried about it until until I know that he can do it the first time," she said. "When he gets higher I get scared, but I know the coach wouldn't let him jump if he wasn't ready." "The coach has told him that he has to be a little scared. He can't be too sure of himself every time he jumps or that's when he'll make a mistake." So far, he has dodged the injury bug, and hasn't suffered suffered a serious injury as a result of the sport. The only injury he could recall was a Orono's Jeremy Blackburn prepares to take off from the 40m ski jump at Kirby Ski Hill on Saturday afternoon during the first day of a two-day competition. competition. The 15-year-old grade 10 student at Clarke High School has been a member of the Oshawa Ski Jumping Jumping Tçam for the past four seasons and hopes to gain a spot on the National Team that is planning a tour of Europe next year. BRHL Atoms Join Forces On Saturday, February 9, the Oilers and the Carnation Carnation atoms of the B.R.H.L. joined forces to face a combination combination of Notre Dame and Holy Family of the Oshawa C.Y.O. Oshawa opened the score early in the first period period and skated to a '4-0 lead that held until midway through the third period. The B.R.H.L. team faced what seemed to be an insurmountable insurmountable task, but the fine play by all the boys got the puck rolling our way. We counted five goals in tne last eight minutes of play to win 5-4. It was a real team effort even though some of the boys had not played together before. Wade Worsley had his season debut in net and made some great stops, especially especially in the third period. David Leppert gave a great display of an end-to- end rush to tie the game with three minutes left. It reminded the parents of Bobby Orr's days. Scott Hodgson got us rolling with the first goal and Scott Lambert Lambert netted the hat-trick which included the winner. Oshawa goals were by G. Venner with three and R. Oldman with one. Thanks to coach Jollymore for sharing the duties and his players, Karl Weiner, David Leppert, Andrew Wraith, Jason Pin- ^ and Philip Dragstra. s game was a prime example example of winners never quitting. quitting. We held onto the lead until five minutes to go in the game when Carnation winger Jason Jason Pingle skated around our defence to tie the game. With thirty-five seconds to go, Carnation winger Andrew Andrew Wraith made a great pass to Danny MacDonald for the winning goal. We played a good game and we could have won. We missed on a penalty shot. The oilers have only lost three games all season, all of them to Carnation. We will be trying harder the next time. On Sunday, February 17, we played the T-Mac atoms and won by the score of 2-1. It was another close game as T-Mac played well. Oiler centre Jason .Frayne opened the scoring in the first period period picking the corner with a good shot. With three minutes minutes left in the second period, period, T-Mac centre Craig Matheson scored on a breakaway. breakaway. Jason Frayne got that back a minute later on a scramble in front of the T- Mac goal. We held on to win the' game. There was good goaltending goaltending at both ends, Brandon Brandon Renton for the Oilers and Scott Sawyer for T-Mac. The game got rough at the end and the penalty boxes were full. Oiler winger Brian Tamblyn assisted on both of Jason's goals. COACH'S " CORNER: Coach Carter says we must work on our teamwork to improve our play. Every team is improving and so must the Oilers. Wade Worsley Worsley and Greg Patterson had a good time last week at a clinic in Oshawa. Gordie Howe and Eric Lindros were two of the instructors. The Bowmanville Figure Skating Club sent 15 skaters to, the Annual Eastern Pine Ridge Competition Competition in Cobourg recently. Everyone placed well in their flights, and should be congratulated.
