To combat the increase in sprains and pulled muscles that people incur, injury recovery recovery clinics are becoming a common sight in medical buildings. The newest such facility has sprung up in Oshawa. Located at 1400 Ritson Road North, the injury recovery recovery clinic has two physiotherapists, physiotherapists, a kinesrologist and a sports therapist. Also included at the clinic are eight rehabilitation machines machines as well as various ultra ultra sound and laser treatment treatment apparatus. Located in the lower level of the building, staff are eagerly eagerly awaiting the arrival of some new equipment. There is ample room for the new machines, and once in place, the clinic will resemble a gym. A big plus for the clinic is the fact that it is an approved approved Workers' Compensation Compensation Community Clinic. In only its second week of operation, there has already been a steady flow of patients. patients. 'We can deal with sports injuries, industrial injuries, motor vehicle accident victims, victims, and basically anyone off the street who has been injured in some way," said Bowmanville resident Darren Darren Vine who is one of the physiotherapists at the clinic. clinic. When asked if there was a difference in treating any of the above mentioned injury injury types, there was no hesitation hesitation in his answer. "There is a difference in philosophy between sports and any other injuries," he began. 'We want to return the athlete to their sport as soon as possible and may include using a sprint, brace, or taping taping to do so. It's a great challenge challenge to get them back playing playing without having to worry about causing further injury." injury." "For an industrial worker, worker, we want to get the person person totally better before returning returning them to the workplace. In many cases they have a family to feed, ana we don't want them returning returning and risking further injury if they're not one hundred hundred percent." The clinic in Oshawa is a sister to the Whitby Physiotherapy Physiotherapy and Sport Injury Clinic. Some of the more frequent frequent visitors to the clinic in Whitby include members of the Oshawa Generals. This brings up another facet of the clinic: keeping people in shape while they recover from an injury. "it's important to keep the other parts healthy if it's impossible to work on a specific specific injuiy," explained Vine who cited the treatment of Mike Craig, formerly of the Oshawa Generals and now of the Minnesota North Stars, as a perfect example. Craig broke his leg as the result of a vicious slash during during a game last season. While out of the lineup, he made frequent visits to the Whitby clinic to ensure that he would be in top shape when he returned. "If an athlete or an industrial industrial worker doesn't keep up their strength, there is a very high rate of repeating the same injury, or incurring incurring another when they return." return." For the recreational athlete, athlete, Vine advises that proper proper stretching techniques will reduce the risk of injury. "If you're a weekend warrior, warrior, you should be doing some flexibility exercises on a daily basis," he advises. "When old age sets in, you lose some range'of motion so it's important to maintain some stretching exercises." "It can be as'easy as doing doing four or five stretching exercises in the morning while you're watching Canada Canada AM." The clinic is open Monday Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m- 6:00 p.m., and the telephone number is 432-9100. Darren Vine demonstrates the proper technique to use on a Cybex upper body exercise machine at an Injury Recovery Clinic in Oshawa.
