Sunday. But, the players took it in stride, with a Cobourg rink winning top honors as they do quite frequently by Monica Wardley The temperature rose but not the tempers of the 48 players -, yes 48 bowlers - who played three games in the scorching 31°C weather last Sunday. It reminded me of Noel Coward's song, "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun." What is this game that fascinates so many young and old? Bowling on the green is a very old game and has hardly changedfrom the time Sir Francis Drake was alleged to have finished off his game before facing the Spanish Armada. It is, as to summer, as curling is to winter. All that is required of each player is a set of bowls, flat shoes and a small fee for six months of seven days a week 'fun, friendship, and good sportsmanship. "Try it, you'll like it!" Now back to the nitty- gritty, Sunday's tournament among Bowmanville, Cobourg, Cobourg, Port Hope, Oshawa, and Whitby Clubs. It looks as if Cobourg took most of the laurels. The grand champions were Jetty Thompson (skip), Marg Connell (vice), and Bev Campbell (lead) all of Cobourg with three games and 38 points. Congratulations! Congratulations! My team lost to them the first game and what a fun time we all had. Second was our own Bow- manville_ team skipped^ by George Dadson, Doris Woll- stein (vice), Irene Carson (lead), with three games for 36 points. Well done! Vic Foxhall's team from Cobourg had a two game high with 43 plus four points. Other team members included Phyllis MacDonald (vice), Martin Foxhall (lead). Art Cartwright (skip), Irene Cartwright (vice), Jean Saywell (lead), all of Oshawa, had a two game win with 39 points. The high single game was won by Howard Corey's team from Coboure with 39 poi Jei lints. His team included ean Rutherford (vice), Bruce Screaton (lead). Gloria Grant of Bowmanville Bowmanville Branch 178 Legion presented presented the cup to the Cobourg Cobourg team skipped by Jetty Thompson. A great day! Terry MacDonald Puts it in High Gear Terry MacDonald continues continues to burn up the track on the Firestone Firehawk Racing Racing Series. On Sunday, the Ultra ' Slim-Fast Camaro underwent underwent another three hour race under extreme heat conditions. Terry and co-driver James Ruehle managed a tenth place finish (in class), after the three hour endurance endurance race at Quebec's Mont. Tremblant race track. "The Ultra Slim-Fast/ MacTool Camaro had a few problems with its gas tank in Sunday's race," said MacDonald MacDonald in a prepared statement. statement. "Due to the extreme heat, and a smaller fuel tank, the Ultra Slim-Fast Camaro had to refuel four times, which caused us to go down a few laps." Five weeks had passed since MacDonald was in her last' 1 Firestone Firehawk race. Much of her time has been consumed with the PPG's Indy Car Series, driving driving pace cars. "When it was time for me to qualify my Ultra Slim- ;Fast Camaro for Sunday's race, it took me a couple of laps to get back in the racing racing mode," she said. "I found myself driving around the race track like I was giving someone a ride." With the combination of new tires and the heat of the day, the track was like driving driving on ice during qualifying. MacDonald qualified 17th overall and 12th in class for the race. Currently, in the Fire stone Firehawk point standings, standings, MacDonald and Ruehle sit in 10th position in the Grand Sport class. Not bad for a couple of rookies. The Terrastar Racing Team finished first, sixth and tenth in the race. All three Terrastar cars have finished top ten in the four Firestone Firehawk races. This weekend MacDonald is off to Michigan to run around Michigan International International Super Speedway. She will be pacing for the Marlboro Marlboro 200, Indy Car race. "I've heard that the PPG Pace Cars get going pretty fast there, so I'm looking forward forward to it." The next Firestone Firehawk Firehawk race is in Shannon- ville on August 25, 26. The champions in each of the three age groups will win the ultimate prize: a chance to be a Blue Jays' bat boy/girl at one of their home games. The competition was a last-minute arrangement put together by Barb Mich- A no of the Town 1 of Newcastle Baseball Association (T.O.N.B.A.), and Roger Linton, Linton, a sales representative at Pickering Honda. "We tried to set something something up in Pickering, hut didn't get any response," said Mr. Linton, who played basketball, football and baseball in high school. "Barb gave me a call, and between the two of us we set it all up." "I'm ecstatic about the turn-out," he said of the 50 plus kids who participated, including 20-25 from Bowmanville. Bowmanville.
