Plans for the Toronto Temple were announced in 1984, and President Thomas S. Monson, second counselor in the First Presidency of the Church and former Canadian Canadian Mission president in Toronto, presided over ground-breaking services on October 10,1987. The imposing edifice features features a 13-foot, gold-leafed statue of Moroni, an ancient ê rophet-historian in The look of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ. The statue is atop the 150- foot spire. Eleven formal dedicatory services are scheduled August August 25-27. After dedication, the temple will be reserved for use by faithful church members for sacred ordinances ordinances on their behalf and for deceased ancestors. "The Toronto Temple is another witness of our faith in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and in His gift of eternal life," Mr. Bourne said. Of the 7.3 million members members worldwide of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, some 126,000 reside in Canada. The first temple in Canada was built in Cardston, Alberta, Alberta, in 1923. Prior ,to the opening of the Toronto Temple, the closest temple _ serving- Church members in eastern Canada was in Washington, D.C., Stuart Bourne said. He expressed gratitude that local members would no longer have to make the long excursion south to attend attend a temple. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a formal formal gown of white satin with a high neckline, bodice and leg-o'-mutton sleeves etched in Guipere lace appliques, appliques, iridescent sequins and seed pearls. Her full skirt, accented at the waist with a white satin bow in the back, fell softly into a chapel-length train. The train was edged with cut-out appliques and Swiss lace. To complete her : ensemble, the bride wore a wreath of satin flowers, leaves and pearl spray accents which held a two-tiered shoulder-length French illusion veil edged in seed pearls. She carried a cascade of red silk roses, ste- . phanotis and baby's breath. The maid-of-honour was Sharon Kemp of Maple Grove. She wore a cocktail- length gown of royal blue taffeta and carried a royal blue and white silk bouquet of roses, lilies and seventh heaven. The best man was Anthony Anthony Higgins of Peterborough, elder brother of the groom. John Metcalf of Lyn, brother of the bride, and Michael Michael Higgins of Peterborough, Peterborough, younger brother of the groom, were the ushers. The organist was Linda Killington, of Oshawa. The reception was held at Chemong Lodge, Bridge- 'north. The bride's mother wore a street-length dress of corn- flower blue crepe and lace, complemented by a corsage of pink sweetheart roses. The groom's mother wore a street-length dress of purple crepe enhanced by a corsage of dendrobium orchids. The newleyweds went to Niagara Falls for their hon- . eymoon. For travelling, the bride chose a black velvet street-length dress accented with a purple satin bow. The happy couple are now residing in Oshawa. Showers Prior to their marriage, the bride and groom were honoured at several parties. A "family" shower was held at the home of Don and Doreen Metcalf of Base Line Road, Bowmanville. A miscellaneous shower was hosted by Sharon Kemp and her mother Mrs. Marilyn Marilyn Kemp of Maple Grove. A stag party for the groom was held in Peterborough Peterborough where he received a monetary gift. The Ebenezer Community Community presented the couple with a card table and chairs and a gift of money. Under the guidance of 16 enthusiastic volunteers, the children participated in songs, Bible stories, health talks and crafts. The closing program was held on Friday evening, July 20 at 7:30 p.m. Parents, family and friends were invited invited to enjoy the program where the children were able to share songs, Bible verses and poems which they had learned throughout the week.
