Kelly O'Neill, Amy Smart, Jennifer Willis, Robert --i Cautious About Waste Exchange Durham Region's reluctance reluctance to participate in a Waste Exchange held in conjunction conjunction with Environment Week in the Town of Newcastle Newcastle may have been merely a misunderstanding. At a Council session late last month, an organizer of Environment Week complained complained that Durham Region officials were less than enthusiastic enthusiastic about plans for a waste exchange. This day had been slated for June 10 in Bowmanville. It would give citizens an opportunity opportunity to take recylable trash to a central depot where others could claim it for their own use. Additional Lots Rejected Newcastle's general purpose purpose committee has voted against creating two additional additional residential lots on Stapleton Rd., near Newton- ville. The two lots are located about 350 feet north of Highway Two. Speaking in favor of the residential lots, Nick Zon- dervan stated that the acreage was not viable for agricultural production. In addition, he said that the neighbouring farms had no objection to the severance which would'cfeate two lots of one acre each. Mr. Zondervan also stated stated that councillors had, in the past, approved much larger developments which bordered on agricultural land. Town staff recommended denial of the application by Mr. Zondervan because the additional lots did not conform conform to the Durham Region Official Plan. In addition, staff claimed that the inclusion of nonfarm nonfarm land use at this site would not be in character with the agricultural potential potential of the surrounding lands. Durham had been asked to take care of the removal of any wastes left over from the project. Ward One Regional Councillor Larry Hannah said after a meeting of the town's general purpose committee committee on Monday that Regional Regional staff were willing to pick up items such as tires, oil, steel, and paint. But they were cautious about the disposal of other items, such as pesticides which might be brought to the exchange. exchange. Mr. Hannah claimed that after a similar program had taken place in Ottawa, the municipality was left with a $500,000 bill connected with the cleanup of the hazardous hazardous materials that were brought forward. Plans for the Waste Exchange Exchange will be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the Region's Waste Management Management Committee, Councillor Hannah said. which popular Jaycette just turned ' ■ 1 w? 8 ^' il Éy • y w ' 4 Happy 30th Birthdays JOHN and TONY from the gang at the Happy 13th Birthday J 1 n n i fl n MARK D YKSTRA'S ELICATESSEN FOOE FOOD MARKET "Home of Quality" 77 King Street W„ Bowmanville 623-3541 m Effective April 19th, store hours will be: Mon.-Wed. 1:30un.«7:00wn.: Friday»:30am.•9:00p.m.j_, Saturday »:30 », in.-6:oo iuii.
