CELLO BAG Three community colleges colleges and The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education Education are launching a pilot project aimed at turning around some statistics on student attrition. According to provincial figures, 60 percent of students students in Ontario who enter Grade nine do not progress to either college or university. university. And, about 40 percent of students who enter a post secondary program leave before before completing it. To stem these numbers, the three colleges and the Board are planning to mesh their programs and people more closely in a linkage agreement. The agreement will mean that high school students will have access, in some cases, to high technology classrooms at the community community college level. They will have improved course and career counselling. The agreement is also designed to promote the enrolment of women in such non- traditional occupations as engineering and technology. Douglas Auld, President of Loyalist College in Belleville; Belleville; Brian Desbiens, President President of Sir Sandford Fleming Fleming College in Peterborough; and Gary Polonsky, President President of Durham College in Oshawa, joined officials with the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education Education on March 20 at the Board office for a special signing ceremony. Representing the Board was Diana Stewart, chairperson; chairperson; Gary Tushingham, Director of Education; and Secretary, Grant C.
