Checker's Variety Plays In Grafton Tournament On Saturday morning March 3, Checkers' Variety PeeWees travelled to Grafton Grafton to participate in a tournament. tournament. In our first game we played a team from Co- bourg and came out on the short-end of a 2-0 score. We couldn't manage any good quality shots at their goal- tender to make him work. Even though we outshot and outplayed them that didn't matter in the final outcome. Our team never gave up and worked hard .the whole game. Our second game on Sunday Sunday morning was against a team from Brighton and we came away with a 4-0 win. One of Checkers ever improving improving players Peter Carmichael Carmichael got a breakaway and scored the first goal on a fine shot between the goalie's goalie's legs. This goal also proved to be the winner. 'There were some good checks handed out by Derek Unsworth arid Robert Hampsey who didn't back off from anybody. Other Checker's Checker's goals were scored by Jeff Johnson, Ryan Leppert and Derek Unsworth. A good effort effort was put forth by all Checkers players. Our third game and I am sorry to say our last game, was against the host team of Grafton which we lost by a score of 3 to 1. We got off to a bad start with 2 goals scored against us in the first two minutes of the game. Our boys fought back hard throughout the whole game. Grafton got their third goal of the game on a nice two way passing effort. Checkers finally got on the board in the third period on a goal by Jeff Johnson set-up by Rob Hampsey and Ryan Leppert. Once again Rob Hampsey showed he can sure hand out some good stiff checks as a few of the Grafton boys found out. As a result of this joss, Checkers came home and Grafton went on to the "B" final against Trenton. Checkers' next tournament tournament is in Oshawa over the March Break week. This is the Times Tournament in which 32 teams participate all week long with the finals on Saturday, March 17. Good luck Checkers, we know you can do it. Anyone interested should contact In a wide open game on Saturday, March 4, the Rotary Rotary hockey team played a f oal for goal game with A&R looting. It was anybody's game right down to the final buzzer. Rotary's first line did all the team's scoring. The goals were going in quite rapidly with Andrew Smale for Rotary and Johnathan Hostick for A&R trading goals. Andrew had his most productive game of the season, season, scoring six times with some accurate shooting. Tyler Tyler Cook also had a big game for his team, scoring four goals. Picking up assists on three of Andrew's goals were Cathy Edwards and Alex Taylor. The second line of Andrew Warren, Tyson Crocker and Justin Osborne was our checking line, get ting in the way of the A&K players on potential scoring chances. Philip Hopkins, playing his first game in goal, made some big stops, and very wisely smothered the puck to take away rebound chances. chances. The defence pairing of Jonathan Ross, who was playing his first game in that position along with Erik Smale's first game out of goal, cleared the puck up to the forwards ana out of our zone. With Jay Henderson playing his best physical S ame, and Tyler Lucas and •rew Passant playing a heads-up game, it showed that everyone played their part well in playing as a team.
