1 1 16 The Canadian Statesman, Bowman ville, January 24,1990 Local Resident Expresses Views On Name Change Much has been written on the issue of changing the name of this area back to Bowmanville. Having lived in this area all my life, its hard to believe how Bowmanville Bowmanville could lose its iden- Quality and Value Always tity. I trust that the Editor will grant me freedom of the press-so here are my views on the issue. Firstly, we have over 120,000 population to the west of us, namely, Oshawa which has long hieen a city in its own right. The area around Oshawa is growing and will continue to grow. Centres like Bowmanville, Brooklin, even Newcastle village could become Boroughs, Boroughs, just like Leaside and North York are Boroughs of Toronto - but still retain their identity. In my opinion the name Town of Newcastle was decided decided upon by faceless bureaucrats bureaucrats at Queen's Park, with no regard for local taxpayers. taxpayers. With all due respect for our democratic process, this kind of decision-making borders on dictatorship. Come on folks, lets get behind this one 100%, even if we have to march on Queen's Park. Lets sign those petitions. Yours truly, Robert W. Cameron R.R. 5, Bowmanville, Ontario. Planning Irks Letter Writer Affordable housing should be a number one priority priority in Durham Region. It was available until the Durham Durham Official Plan was enacted. enacted. Since that time and over the last ten years we have witnessed a housing crisis. It is more evident all the time and these are the reasons: reasons: 1) Controlled city development development squeezing people in. 2) Monopoly land control for select companies. - 3) No rural development 4) -New housing areas in between the two nuclear generating plants only. 5) Thousands of farmers unable to freely sell their land, but forced to live off ever decreasing subsidies and smaller earnings. 6) More Government built houses each year built at the expense of taxpayers. 7) More "non profit" scandal scandal type housing built with greater profit for cooperative cooperative companies. If an ordinary laymen set out these planning principles principles they would be called insane. insane. Wonder of wonders, our' Regional Planners are advising Council these insane insane principles are successful successful and should be continued. Successful for Who? This is Canada, it is not some third world country where humanity means little. little. Let's put a stop to this insane planning which is robbing all citizens of their land rights. Thousands of young people died for this land. Millions lost their homeland to obtain this land right in Canada. Surely, we as citizens and our Councillors Councillors will work to put a stop to this exploitation. Yours very truly, Doug Wilson R.R. 2 Port Perry.
