Art Hester in our nets was able to stop everything he could see and was only beaten by deflections and screen shots by Eric Man- ship, Patty Brereton and Larry O'Brian. Playing on a line with Siegi Rohr, Bob Deblois and Grant Flintoff, each scored three times. Bob's goals came on sharp, accurate, quick-release shots as he was set up by his line mates. On Saturday, December 9th the players travelled to Grafton to participate in their first tournament of the season. Their first game was played against one of the two Grafton teams and, in spite of some excellent saves from Nick Zdravkovski, the J&J players found themselves themselves down one goal at the end of the opening period. It was not until the last minute minute paid off when Greg Masterson Masterson drove the puck into the Grafton net. Assists went to Darren Crawford and Brian Ball. At the end of the second period, the score settled at 2-1 for Grafton. Grafton. Early in the third period, Grafton increased their lead. However, J&J Sharpening continued to dig in tne corners corners and forecneck aggressively, aggressively, resulting in two goals for them. The first was earned by Brian Ball with assists going to Stephen Wraith and Brad MacMas- ter. Brad, along with Jamie Powell, also earned an assist on his team's next goal by Greg Masterson. Unfortunately, Unfortunately, these two goals were not enough to win the game but the team still advanced in the tournament. In game number two, that day, the J&J players showed their fans what they're capable of doing, maintaining their positions and passing the puck. Facing Facing off against a Cobourg Team, the J&J players were determined to avoid elimination. elimination. Darren Crawford filled the position between the pipes this time and gave a superb performance. With only three minutes left in the game, it looked as though Darren had his first shutout when Cobourg ■ broke through to score. However, However, by this time, the J&J victory was assured with six goals of their own. Goals were scored by Colin Galin- ski, Greg Masterson, Stephen Stephen Wraith and Jacob Gor- ski, while assists went to Brad Johnson, Brad McMaster, McMaster, Greg Masterson and Philip Gushulak. The next day, J&J returned returned to play against, the other Grafton team. Darren Crawford again supplied the goal tending in what turned out to be their toughest and pe'rhaps best played game of the tournament. Grafton played a fast paced, physical game that put a great deal of pressure on J&J's defensive defensive lines. The puck was played end-to-end and fans were witness to top-notch thrilling hockey. Near the end of the second period, a 1-1 score indicated the comparable comparable caliber of the teams and clearly showed that the game could go either way. However, unfortunately for J&J Grafton managed to jump ahead with two more goals late in the third period. period. But, the clock ran out before they could score that important tieing goal to lead to overtime. Philip Gushulak should be congratulated on scoring the two J&J goals while the whole team deserves praise for their performance and behaviour both on and off the ice. The following weekend, on Saturday, December 16th, the team journeyed to Oshawa to play an exhibition exhibition game against the Lake Vista Atoms. This time, Chris Oyler, with his usual cheery disposition, volunteered volunteered to tend goal for his team. From the moment the puck was dropped at the start of the game, Nick Zdravkovksi made it clear that he was there to play hockey! Thirty seconds into the game, he scored his first of four goals! His second came less than a minute later. later. However, the Lake Vista players showed that they were not going to push-overs as they answered with two goals to tie the game. Again, Nick replied with another before the period was finished, finished, bringing the score to 3-2 for J&J. As the second period was played, it was clear to the spectators that some of the Lake Vista players were becoming becoming too aggressive in a non-contact division. To the credit of the J&J players, they continued to rely on their positional play and passing to win the game. Nick Zdravkovski scored his fourth goal in the third period period and Jamie "the slot-man" Powell tapped one in to finish finish the scoring. Final score was 5-3 for J&J. Well done team! Finally, the next morning on Sunday, December 17th, the J&J Atoms returned to the Newcastle Arena to resume resume league play against the Bowmanville team sponsored sponsored by T-Mac. After Nick Zdravkovski's "Gretsky- imitation" the night before, coach Rick Powell moved him to goalie for this game! The excitement generated in this game could only be equalled in the N.H.L. The goalies at both ends of the rink were called upon to make some spectacular saves. T-Mac's goalie, Jason Barr, was especially impres!- sive, making saves that clearly frustrated the J&& forewards. T-Mac defense'- men also supplied superb back-up net-minding for Ja' son. » Throughout the game, scores were alternately add) ed to each side of the board. With T-Mac starting the scoring, it looked as if J&J would play the whole game trying to catch up. It wasn't until the third period that J&J took the lead for the first time, a lead that was short lived as T-Mac came back to tie the game mo) ments later. However, with only 20 seconds on the clock/ Brian Ball completed his hat trick and finished the scoring scoring in the very exciting game. Final game score was, 6-5 for J&J Sharpening.
