We have to tell you it was a very frightening experience. experience. The news media started started on Wednesday to tell everybody everybody who was staying on the Grand Strand on Myrtle Bench to get ready to leave. We started to pack our belongings belongings still hoping that Hugo would change directions directions as we still had over a week of our vacation to go. Thursday morning, police sirens started and they were telling everybody to leave as soon as possible and then the Governor of South Carolina Carolina came on T.V. and ordered ordered everybody to be gone by 3 p.m. We packed our car immediately and left, hoping to be able to go back to Myrtle Myrtle Beach. We went to highway highway 501 north. The traffic was unbelievable but everyone everyone was driving very carefully carefully and it took us almost three hours to go 15 miles to get to Convay where we heard on the radio a shelter was being opened at the high school and elementary school. We chose to go to the high school and we are sure glad We did because at the other school there was a 2000 lb air conditioning unit on the roof and it blew right off. When we arrived at Conevay High School we were welcomed by the school principal and the American Red Cross was there and everybody who came in had to be registered. After we were registered we were told to find a spot and that was ours for the duration of our stay. By this time, we were really getting scared. Unless you have gone through this you have no idea what it was like. We sat and watched families arrive who were even more scared than we were, because many of them knew that they would probably have nothing to go back to when Hugo was over. We sure met a lot of interesting interesting people. The faculty of the school were fantastic and treated everyone great. I can't say enough good things about the American Red Cross, they were fantastic. They had hot food for everyone as long as we had electricity. It was a very long sleepless night. Every once in a while we would go and look out the window and the wind ' and rain was so bad it looked like a snow storm. There was devastation all around us but the high school stood firm. Winds reached 135 m.p.h. Day light finally came and the Red Cross had cereal cereal and milk and juice for everyone. At this time we were still hoping to be able to go back to Myrtle Beach. We kept getting news flashes on the radio and we knew things were really bad. I was interviewed by the T.V. people wanting to know what it was like and how I felt. The way I was shaking, they knew. A lot of people who were interviewed interviewed said they didn't know what they would have when they were allowed to go home. About 9 a.m. the State Police came in to the High School and we went to talk to them about going back to our motel. They told us it was impossible to go back for at least 12 hours and even if we were allowed to get back in there would be no power for at least 4 days, so we decided to head home. We had filled our car with gas the day before and it is a good thing we did because because you couldn't get any gas. until almost to West Virginia Virginia on account of no hydro. There were trees down all the way past W. Virginia and quite a few were on peoples' peoples' homes. I don't know ow much was on T.V. up here, but before we left Con- i way reports were finally coming in from Myrtle Beach. In one place 30 houses houses were washed into the ocean even some cement swimming pools were washed out to sea, sand was 5 inches deep back 3 blocks from the ocean I would have liked to have gotten some pictures to bring back but we weren't allowed back in because we didn't own property. We finally arrived home on Sunday. It was an experience experience we sure wouldn't want to go through again. jmi Hi' 1BBSB WILLIS FINANCIAL S ERV1CES mR BLOCK IHC MCOMC TAX IPtClAUlTl GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES BEST RATES 1 Yr 11.75% 2 Yr 11.25% 3 Yr 11.375% 4 Yr 10.85% 5 Yr. 10.85% 30-179 Days 12% Rales Subject to Verification 243 King^St. E„ Bowmanville Mall 623-9400 The Spirit Awards program program operates on a local, divisional divisional and worldwide level. level.
