6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 8,1989 Section Two Happenings at #XA ) W averley Public School A Parent Advisory Committee Meeting - by Stephen Clancy It was a Monday night. Parents filed into Waver- le/s Resource Centre at 7:00 and were attending a Parent Advisory Committee meeting. At first they talked about O.P.E.N. (Ontario Public Education Net- work). This program encourages encourages parents to put their children into public schools, rather than private schools. The main issues discussed though was the Late Primary Primary Program. Two Waverley Waverley late primary teachers, Mrs. Allin and Ms. Mathews sat down to join the group. Then we all headed down the hallway to Mrs. Allin's class and we took a look at what happens in her class. All of our attention was focussed focussed on centres because Waverley is encouraging more centres to be made up so kids can learn how to behave behave with other peers. Some of the centres were: weighing, weighing, estimating, patterns, measuring ana the block centre. All of the parents thought this class room was good. Then we walked across the hall and into Ms. Mathews class to see what her program was. Since her class v/as doing Weather in Environmental Studies, all of the centres were pertaining pertaining to weather. A few of those centres were: clouds, weather dictionary, seasonal pictures and weather in general. general. Like the other class, the parents thought that this class was very productive. productive. I learned a lot that night. New Fish at Waverley ■ by Heather Youngman. On Monday, Feb. 20th, 1989 at about 10:00 a.m. Waverley was blessed with new fish. We have an aouar- ium in our library ana we had only four fish. At 10:00 on Monday morning, one of the Blackmollies had babies.. She had about 30 of them. Being only about half a centimetre centimetre long, you could hardly hardly even notice them, while they were in plants and behind behind rocks. As everybody heard the good news they started to crowd around. We found our nursery for the fish and quickly put them in it. We put them in the nursery nursery so that their parents wouldn't eat them. A nursery nursery is a plastic container that the baby fish go in. The container floats in the water and has water in it. It protects protects them from their parents, parents, until they are long enough to be let out. The mother stjll seems to be kind of slow or lazy but I'm sure she will be back to normal normal soon. The babies seem to be having a great time. Doings in Mrs. Pitt's Class - by Stephen Clancy This month has been a busy one for Mrs. Pitt's class. A special thanks to Kristy who gave all of this information to me. Well, from the looks of it, Mrs. Pitt's class is very organized. organized. Public Speaking at Waverley - by Stephen Clancy Recently, at Waverley Public School, a public speaking competition was held. About a month earlier, speech productions in creative creative writing involved all students students from grades 4 to grade 6. In their classes the nervous nervous students said their speeches. Mrs. Lachance was the Co-ordinator and we had a special guest, Mr. Taullie Thompson (Waverley Public School's former Vice- Principal) as a judge. The competition was over and we had settled back into our chairs when Mr. Thompson's voice boomed over the P.A. system. This was the moment moment we had been waiting for. Third place went to Heather Youngman, second to Scott Read and first place, Stephanie Morgan! Heather's Heather's speech had been on Life's Maddening Moments. Scott's was on One of Those Days and Stephenie's was on "The Adolescent Revolution!" Revolution!" It was great! I talked to her and she said, "I'm looking forward to competing competing in the Legion's competition, competition, but I'm a little nervous." nervous." I'm sure she'll do great. All of the speeches were very good. Ms. McWilliam's Class - by Amy Ramage Ms. McWilliam's class is a Special Education class. They do everything the other other classes do, like math and spelling. There are seven kids in the class. They are in Ms. McWilliam's class for most of the day and then they go to a different class for gym and art. The class went on a field trip with another another class. In math, two of the students are studying multiplication and the rest of the class is studying adding adding and subtracting. For spelling they pick words that go with the time of the year. They do most of the work in the morning. Well, it sounds like that class is very busy.
