Outstanding Public Speakers at St. Francis of Assisi Magnet Magic Mrs. Anynn and Miss Pitcher's class got together and are working on Partners in Action. In this study unit they are working on Magnets Magnets and Magnetic force. There are two groups. Group 1 goes to Mrs. Anyan (Wa- vcrley's Librarian) and makes a booklet and Group 2 goes to Miss Pitcher and experiments with magnets, molecules land iron filings. Mrs. Anyan's group had to answer 13 questions and make a cover and title page and display them for the grades 1, 2 and 3. Miss Pitcher's group has done two experiments so far. One was to put two bar magnets under under newspaper with the paper over them. Then they sprinkled a little bit of iron filings on it to see what kind of magnetic field it had. In the second experiment they took a magnet and a bucket of water and they put paper clips in the water so see if a magnet will attract under water and guess what? It worked! The whole class is having a great time! By: Rebecca Vatcher A Visitor At Wavcrlcy Last week we had a visitor visitor at Waverlcy. Her name is Paula Paquette and she is a Dental Health Nurse. She started this job 12 years ago but for the last 4 years has been going to different schools and talking to schools in the Bowmanville area. She talks to children about how to brush their teeth, what snacks to cat and how to prevent cavities. She also talks about other things. In Junior Kindergarten Kindergarten and Kindergarten she tells them a Dental Story. Story. In Grade one she talks about Murphy the molar. In Grade two it is a Smurf story. story. In grade three she talks to students about nutrition and they watch a videotape. In grade four they talk about nutrition again, do an experiment and see a videotape. videotape. Grade five reviewed all Dental Health topics and watched a video. In Grade six they learned about Gin- givitus, which is a gum disease disease and also watched a film. Mrs. Paquette says that she always enjoys coming coming to Waverley. I hope she does well in other schools! By: Heather Youngman Secret Friends Ms. Mathews started an activity called A Secret Friend. It is for teachers only. They had to draw names and whoever they picked was their secret friend. Most teachers participated. participated. They had to buy a gift for their secret friend and put it in the teachers' mail box. On Friday they went to the staffroom to see who their secret friend was. Some of the gifts were: chocolates, chocolates, cinammon hearts, flowers and notes. Some of the notes would say: "1 will do your yard duty at lunch or recess". Well it sounds like a sweet time! Short "An" Sweet At this moment, Ms. Bal- lantyne's Grade 5/6 class and Mr. Carlisle's Grade 6 class are studying communication communication in Environmental Studies. In this particular unit, Mr. Carlisle's class is going to make a radio and television station. In studying studying journalism Ms. Ballan- tynes class visited The Oshawa Times and then Oshawa's radio station CKAR where they met Paris Black, an Oshawa-based singer. This was a very educational educational activity. By: Steve Clancy Ms. Mathew's Grade 3 Class Lately Ms. Mathew's grade 3 class has been very busy. They arc doing a weather unit with Ms. Dona- feld's class. In this unit they have eleven centres and they move back and forth between the two classes. They are keeping track of the weather to see if the groundhog on Groundhog's Day was really right. In some of their centres they are making thermometers and they arc learning about clouds, snow and weather instruments. They are almost almost finished learning capital capital written letters. While doing doing this they also learned all of the different rules for where capitals go. In reading reading they are also doing centres centres and in Math it is regrouping regrouping and carrying. On February 15 it was the 100th day of school. On that day her class brought 100 different things in to school. Then they did different activities activities with those things. It sounds like they are very busy and I hope they do well! There will be a prize for the top Police Program Will Emphasize Drug Awareness On Sunday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m., a Drug Awareness Program will be presented by Constable John Logan at the Bowmanville Seventh- day Adventist Church at the corner of Highway Two and Lamb's Rd. Constable Logan has been a member of the Durham Durham Region Police Force, Whitby Detachment for 26 years and for the past 11 years has specialized in the Community Services Crime Prevention Bureau. Constable Logan is a high school resource officer for Durham Region which covers 27 high schools. His one main area of concern at present is drug education, especially because of the terrible terrible scourge of drugs which now surrounds us, and is so prevalent among our young' people from public school right on up. This timely program will include a video presentation and a question period, all of which will be of great interest interest to both young people and adults. They came up with the name of Match-Makers because they were trying to match-make, of course! The students were able to buy dance tickets at noon hour before the dance. The dance was to be on Thursday, February February 16th, starting at 2:05 p.m. ending at 3:25 p.m. The guys and gals were able to buy their sweethearts a small, medium or large heart. The hearts were signed by their owners, plus whoever their sweethearts are and hung on the wall in the gym. The Pines is also putting on a play called, "The Life and Death of Sneaky Fitch", by James L. Rosenberg. Right now they are at the rehearsal rehearsal stage on Monday and Wednesday " afternoons after school. They are in the second act of the play. They are involved in getting props and in the making of the set. Ms. Wilson, the director of the play, says, "The play is coming along very well and the actors can put their books down for the first act." The grade SB students had a big bake sale Wednesday, Wednesday, February 15. They raised over $60. and are using using the money to go to the Ryerson Theatre to see The Time Machine on March 8th. The bake sale was a great success. The grade 7 students are going to the Outdoor Education Education Centre this week. Students at St. Francis of Assisi School in Newcastle Newcastle Village participated in a public speaking contest on News from Central School Central School's volleyball volleyball teams participated in the Kinsmen Tournament. The girls team coached by Mr. St. John received the bronze medal and the boys team coached by Mile. Dion received the gold medal. Congratulations to both teams. We have had two very enjoyable assemblies lately. Mrs. Kemp a former teacher at our school, and now a member of the Cancer Society gave a presentation on the harmful effects of smoking. It sure gave us something to think about. At our other assembly, our school band performed for us, and we thoroughly enjoyed enjoyed their music. Mr. Duval is starting a Science club and he hopes to have enough interested people people involved to prepare Science Science projects for our board's Science Fair held in Co- bourg. Our choirs have been ng " Music Festivals. 1rs. Merkley has been assisting assisting Mrs. Collins and Mr. St. John. The choirs are already already sounding very nice. They have also been doing doing book reports and running running a poem contest. The class is going on a skiing trip this month. A short time ago, Miss Pitcher, a teacher from Waverley School came ' and gave a presentation on her trip to Australia. The class found her presentation very interesting interesting and informative. Each pupil is now preparing a project on Australian animals. animals. Mrs. McQuarrie's Kindergarten Classes Mrs. McQuarrie's classes have been talking about Teddy Bears. They have made Teddy Bear books and they are learning why teddy bears are special. For snack, each child made a teddy using using bread, peanut butter, licorice licorice and a teddy bear cookie cookie cutter.
