Organist was June Nichols who also introduced introduced the guest speaker, Jack Goering, well know naturalist of Port Hope. He talked of the destruction of the rain forest which stretches across the world to the south, with special attention attention to Brazil. That country country is so heavily in debt that the cutting of the green belt provides work and an effort to pay off the debt. Wages are so poor that mahogany brought from there to Ontario Ontario sells for much less than our native white pine. The effort seems hopeless, so several environmental agencies agencies are arranging a plan of help by making it possible to buy an acre of the forest for $25 which will be uncut and the money will go to relieve the debt. His very thorough presentation cleared up many questions about the working of the plan and how we might share. He was thanked by Orald Ford. Tea and gingerbread with whipped cream were served before the business period. Dora Nichols had arrived in time to conduct this part of the meeting. Berniece Best read a letter from the boy in Nicaragua and showed his picture which accompanied it. Thank you letters from Len and Ethel Oughtred and Mrs. Mason for the Christmas remembrance were read, it was good to hear from long time Wesleyville Wesleyville people. It was decided to become landowners in Brazil and a special offering was taken which covered the cost of one acre. Plans were discussed by Jean Payne for the September bus tnp, and also arrangements were made for attending Prcsby- terial at Warkworth and the World's Day of Prayer at Garden Hill. On Thursday afternoon, seven ladies were working at Willow Beach home of Jane McColl to put together the quilts which had been prepared. There was a lot of putting together and sewing and work will be completed on Monday, February 6th, ready for marking and quilting. quilting. There is a wealth of experience experience in the designing, and all the other operations of making the finished product. product. February 4th, 1989 was another beautiful Sunday morning and church service at Welcome United was conducted conducted by Reverend W. Sedgwick with the theme, "As we forgive everyone indebted indebted to us". His sermon was a clear picture why so many people are hungry. But all over the world landowners landowners have lost their plots of land for many reasons including including others' greed. With a freehold a man could at least keep his family fed, but with land going to the hands of the government, and that government in debt, crops grown on the country's farms are those for export to pay the country's debt and tne food for natives is not grown. Is the only answer answer the seventh year forgiveness forgiveness of debt? These fann disasters are happening in Canada too. The story for the children was one ' of those true happenings which brings hope and comfort comfort to one of God's people in a time of need.
