) Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, How many commercial establishments are as responsible responsible as Hooper's Jewellery Jewellery or Cathy's Gold? These firms have taken recycling another step further and are providing leadership in the goal to recycle all of our waste. Last month, thousands of children and adults received toys, trinkets and gadgets which run on one or more small batteries. Batteries which eventually run out of power and become useless. What to do with these old batteries? One thing that must not be done is to throw them into a garbage can. Batteries contain toxins which can harm our environment environment and therefore they .■must be separated from the waste stream. Batteries also ^contain metals which can be ,Te-used. - Cathy's Gold and Hoop- Ter's Jewellery have agreed io accept your small batter- •ios and recycle them. Just .'take your hearing aid, calculator, calculator, watch or whatever item you have which runs on r small batteries to Hooper's or Cathy's Gold and they •will gladly remove and recycle recycle the old battery for you. Recycling is successful when many people do their small part. No one individual can do it all, all individuals can do their part. These fine local firms should receive full marks and our support for providing providing local leadership in this aspect of recycling. Another area of concern is the use of styrofoam cups. These cups are normally only used once and then thrown into the garbage can where they become part of the mountain of waste. Styrofoam cups are not only wasteful but add to the depletion of the ozone layer which protects us from the green house effect (Remember (Remember the heat of last summer?) We should all try to avoid the use of styrofoam cups and use products which do not harm the environment. Full marks go to Ebenezer United Church who have made a decision some time ago to not use plastic cutlery nor styrofoam _ cups and have shown that it is entirely possible to live without these plastic, styrofoam garbage items. They have shown leadership leadership in what can be done to protect the environment. What other club or organization organization is so involved in protecting protecting our future? Carter's Bakery has decided decided to not use plastic trays anymore. Full marks for this fine family business. The people in and around Orono are able to go to the Armstrong I.G.A. store and purchase bio-degradable garbage bags. The people in and around Bowmnnville can purchase these same items at the Miracle Mart. These bags have been made with corn starch (thereby helping the farming community) community) instead of only film plastics. These bags are said to break down in 3-4 months instead of the 300-400 years required for the "regular" plastic garbage bags. What other store will follow follow the lead of Armstrong's I.G.A. and Miracle Mart and provide their customers with environment friendly prod-: ucts? Just think of the number number of plastic bags which end up in the garbage stream each week. We would be really interested interested in learning what other commercial, social or business business establishments have done to help our environment environment through recycling. If you are interested in having your name placed on our mailing list to receive more information or you want to join a recycling or other environment group write to John Vëlduis Box 16, Hampton or call Mrs. Helen MacDonald 983-9667. John Veldhuis. HAPPY BIRTHDAY To The Half Century Sisters NOPMA AND HELEN I V >1 ifc - . \ daefc-* myt- : Jr-', --y r v m from your loving (and much younger) «sisters Pat and Lee Hon. James Bradley Minister of the Environment 135 St. Clair Avenue West Toronto, Ontario M4V1P5 Dear Mr. Bradley: My community is under siege. It began last summer with Metro Toronto's search for on interim landfill. Initially, four sites were named as potential potential locations in Newcastle. Newcastle. Since that time, three of the four sites have been eliminated eliminated as being environmentally environmentally unsuitable by the engineering engineering firm of M.M. Dillon. However, the site known as N-l remains under scrutiny. At present it is the primary site being considered by Metro Metro Toronto. What is frightening frightening is that Metro have made it clear that they will require an Environmental Assessment Exemption. Over the past few months, residents in the immediate immediate area have been terrorized terrorized by representatives from M.M. Dillon. Repeated demands for drilling rights, confidential financial information, information, and the haunting spectre of 11 million tonnes of somebody else's garbage have local morale at an all time low. Dillon is also a key player in B.F.I.'s search for a location location for their new medical waste incinerator that will act as a central facility for all of Ontario. They are currently currently in the process of preparing preparing an assessment application application for the site immediately across the 401 from N-l. In both cases, the sites were selected selected by M.M. Dillon. I was appalled to discover that the proximity of these sites, wasn't considered when, they were selected, nor will this be a factor in the environmental environmental assessment process. process. Although initially rejected by M.M. Dillon, the site known as N-4 is once again being considered as a potential potential landfill. Laidlaw are currently currently making application to expand the existing facility from 20 to 150 acres, ana have proposed that this dump become the central facility facility for all of Durham. In addition, Ontario Hydro Hydro is considering this area for an ash management facility. facility. Once again, this community community is being asked to be a dumping ground for another community's garbage - waste from the Lakeview Thermal Generating Station in Mississauga. Finally, there is Darlington Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. Station. The Tritium Removal Facility, that was exempted from an Environmental Assessment, Assessment, was shut down within two weeks of becoming becoming operational. A tritium leak within the building on October 27th, 1988, forced a full evacuation of the plant and it has not. reopened since. Add to this the very real possibility of Darlington B, and the related additional high-level radioactive waste. It would appear that Newcastle is being offered up as a sacrificial lamb to urban urban pollution. The variety of waste facilities proposed for this immediate area is staggering. staggering. But what is most disturbing disturbing is that the location of one type of waste means little little in tne assessment of locating locating another. What is needed is an environmental policy that examines not only the potential impact of one type of facility, but the potential interaction with others. In addition, community saturation saturation should be considered. It can be argued that the system of Intervener Funding Funding has been established to allow communities to defend themselves. WHY SHOULD THEY HAVE TO? Our judicial judicial system is based on the assumption that one is innocent innocent until proven guilty. This is not the case in Newcastle. A small community, exhausted exhausted by on going environmental environmental battles, is called upon again and again to defend defend itself against outside intrusions. intrusions. The rights of the individuals individuals of this area are being overridden by corpo-, rate money, and the inability of larger neighboring, communities communities to deal with their own problems. We need your help. It is obvious that we do not have either the time or the emotional emotional energy to fight off every every outside force attempting to destroy a way of life, that in many cases, has been a family tradition since before Confederation. Anxiously awaiting your reply, I am, yours sincerely, (Mrs.) Suzanne Elston, R.R. 2, Bowmanville Cargill Buys Fertilizer Firm Cargill Limited today announced announced that it has purchased purchased the retail fertilizer distribution network of Cya- namid Canada Inc. in Ontario Ontario and Quebec. He mentioned the positive results of Soviet "glasnost" internationally, and the need for diplomacy in our everyday everyday lives. This respect for time restraints allows all the participants to be heard in the fair and equitable manner manner while keeping meeting lengths manageable (approximately (approximately two hours). Table Topics Master Norm Brodenck continued the diplomatic theme with such impromptu one minute speeches ns: "You are a policewoman policewoman attempting to stop a fight between two big, burly men after a car accident. accident. Do so diplomatically" or "you are tne mother of two children arguing over who washes and who dries the dishes. Resolve the disagreement disagreement in a diplomatic manner." Toastmaster of the evening, evening, Randy MacGillivray, gave us a humorous definition definition of diplomacy as being "when you can tell somebody somebody where to go so nicely that they actually look forward forward to the trip".
