Silver Ring for Major Atom Toros The Canadian Tire Major Atom Toros came away from the tournament of Champions held in Saltfleet November 10-16 with Silver Rings proving they were champions. After losing twice in overtime overtime last year to a very strong Flamboro club.the C.T. Toros had rings in their eyes from the minute they arrived in Saltfleet. With only five players returning returning from last year's team, the C. T. Atom Toros have moulded together a competitive hockey club. Toros 3-Amherst N.Y.-O The opening faceoff saw #27 of Amherst Meaglan Sit- tler-yes, Sittler, Daughter of great Leaf Darryl Sittler. She could skate and shoot and had her mother's looks but was no match for the Toros. Steve Oke recorded the shut-out while Ryan Robinson Robinson did all the scoring with Jason Hoffman and Gary Adams picking up assists and each team recording 3 penalties. Toros 5-Woolwich-3. The C.T. Toros definitely had their hands full with this club. As the competition got better the Toros improved. Gary Adams from Jason Hoftmar scored just 55 seconds seconds into the game which cooled off the strong skating Woolwich Atoms. At 7:01 of the 2nd, Snell scored for the visitors but while Woolwich was still whooping it up, Jason Jack- man assisted by Bruce Har- >y J num put the Toros ahead again. Ryan Robinson walked in alone just before the second period ended and left the goalie flat footed making it 3 tol. The score stayed that way until half way thru the 3rd period when the Toros had a complete defensive lapse and left Byron Harnum alone on several occasions and Woolwich scored 2 quick goals to tie the game. But with 1.08 left in the 3rd, Ryan Robinson from Jason Jackman and Warren Bate gave the Toros the lead once again; and with 36 seconds remaining Ryan Robinson put one in the empty net to sew up the victory, this was by far the best club the C.T. Atom Toros have played this season. Toros 7 Flamboro 3 The five returning Toros had revenge in their eyes from the drop of the puck the Toros outskated ana out played the much smaller Flamboro team. The same team that beat the Toros twice in overtime 1 year ago. Bowman ville jumped into a 1st period 3-0 lead on goals by Gary Adams from Jeff Murphy and Ryan Robinson, Robinson, and again Gary Adams from Warren Bate, and before before the period ended Mike Nesbitt's hard work as always always around the oppositions net paid off. Assist going to Jason Hoffman. Ryan Robinson scored the only goal of the 2nd period making the score 4-0. In the 3rd, Adam Born of Flamboro scored but Warren Bate bounced right back seconds seconds later with Gary Adams With L 5-1 lead the Toros got a little goal hungry and forgot about their own zone, and the visitors quickly picked up 2 goals. But before the 3rd period had ended, Ryan Robinson from Jeff Murphy and Jason Hoffman and again his 3rd of the game Gary Adams from Jason Jason Hoffman closed out the scoring. Each team picked up minor penalties. Toros 5 Woolwich 2 What a game for a championship! championship! If Woolwich had a game plan, it didn't work. Ryan Robinson who caused all sorts of problems for Woolwich in game 2 by scoring scoring 3 goals and killing key penalties was checked very closely. But they forgot about two other veterans, Jeff Murphy and Gary Adams. Adams. Jeff Murphy who had done everything in the first three games but score, got the Toros Toros on the sheet just 30 seconds seconds into the game. What a see-saw battle but within 2 1/2 minutes in the 3rd period Bowmanville scored 3 times. Warren Bate from Gary Adams and a minute later Gary Adams from Warren Bate and with Woolwich still in shock. Jason Jason Jackson scored on a beautiful shot with two excellent excellent passes. Nesbit to Parkins Parkins to Jackman Toros now 5-1. Before the period ended Snell scored on a long shot that Byron Harnum had no chance on. As the buzzer went the boys poured over the boards and the parents s'ghed as they survived another one. The boys waited patiently while Woolwich received the runner-up trophy. But the. Toros team accepted the championship trophy but most of all those Silver Championship Rings. Teams win games and teams lose games individuals individuals don't; Each C.T. Bun King Drops Three Bun King PeeWee Toros did not fare too well at the Bolton Tournament this past November 13 and 14. The Toros appeared to run out of gas in tne third period in all three games they played. In the first, the Burt Kings led 2-0 on goals by : Joel Crombie from Dave Zsabo, and Rich Bateman from Dave Zsabo. Hespeler came back to score four straight making the final score 4-2 Hespeler. In the second game, Toros held a 4-1 lead out couldn't hang on. With the score tied at five late in the game Hespeler Hespeler scored two quickies, ending it at 7-5. David Zsabo had two goals with Steve Desmedt ana Co rey Strand a goal and an assist assist each. Two assists went to Rich Bateman while a single assist went to Tyler Stokes and Joel Crombie. "Mighty 'Mite" Dykstrà had the final Toro goal. Steady on defense were Chad Vanaerende and Mark Breckenridge. In the third game, the hard working Toros saw a nice goal by Bolton wipe out a 2-2 tie late in the game again. Bolton scored with just two seconds left, making it a 4-2 loss for Bun King. Both the Bolton goalie ana Toros Jamie Jamie Doyle came up big, keeping the score close. Matty Matty Dykstra scored the first bakery goal from Rich Bateman Bateman while "Bam Bam" De- smidt scored the other, assisted assisted by Jason Crosbie. The Peewee B team hosted Cobourg on November 14 to be defeated 5-3. At one point the Toros were down 4-0 but three quick goals put us back in the game. Cobourg held the lead to take the win. Goals were scored by Jeremy Jeremy Woodcock (2) and Tyson Pearcey. Assists went to Je- rem Woodcock, Carlo Warr (2) and Matt Aitken. On Saturday, November 21 the "B" team went to Bewd- ley for their annual tournament. tournament. The first game against Oshawa ended up in a 3-3 tie. After the overtime period of eliminating one player after after each minute the game was still tied. Then we went into a shoot out. Collin Taggart Taggart scored the winning goal for us. Other goals were Selects Earn 2-1 Victory On Sat., Nov. 14, at Darlington, Darlington, the B.R.H.L. Selects played host to Richmond Hill Tykes and came away with a hard fought 2-1 victory. These teams were well matched and after Richmond Hill led 1-0, Stephen Ewles took over and scored two goals to cement cement the win. His first goal was unassisted and his second second came from a great setup setup by Brett Pakosta. Other members of this year's team arc: Jake Davis (goal), Chris Watson, Clayton Kohn, Jeff Shmyr, Jamie McCarthy, Craig Matheson, Blake Aylsworth, Chris McKenzie, McKenzie, Andy and Erik Griffin, Brian Lowery, Craig Sabine and Michael McCrory. These 6 and 7-year-old tykes are great to watch and it is surprising how well they pick up and understand understand the game. Both teams were presented presented with trophies at the end of the game. Novice Toros Chalk One Up For Experience On Sat., November 14, Oshawa Red Wings downed the Toros 8-2 in what hopefully hopefully was a good lesson for them. They were out positioned, out passed, out skated all which led to a bad day for the Toros'. M. McCarthy scored one goal, G. McMur- tcr scored one goal and had one assist and K. Picked 1 had one assist. The team played Tuesday, Tuesday, November 17, at the Darlington Arena from seven p.m. to eight p.ni. against Cobourg. 8PCPT8 Three Big Wins for Major Midgets On November 18 the Hal- minen Major Toro Midgets - - - - ,gvr .The dge travelled to Pickering Village for a league game. The Toros Toros were in control for most of the game, outshooting Pickering 53-26 and scoring 12 goals to Pickering's 1. Stephen Smith and Mark Tripp each got a hat trick ana two assists, with other goals and assists as follows: Rob Real 2 goals, 2 assists; Shane Armstrong, Greg Healey and Gareth Stone 1 goal, 3 assists; Tony Van- Hoof 1 goal, 1 assist: Brad Carnegie 2 assists and Dean Baumnauer and Britt Cole each getting 1 assist. Burke and Darrin shared the goaltending goaltending duties. After playing 20 games the Toros nave a very impressive impressive goals for and against figure. They have scored 136 goals with 219 assists and nave only allowed 30 goals. Another league game took C l ace on Saturday, Novem- er 21 against the L.N.H.L. Bruins in Oshawa. Toros came out on top of that game 6-1. Again tne Halminen boys capitalized, getting 60 shots on net. Goaltender Burke Lush was only tested with 9 shots, letting one in with just 15 seconds left in the game. Bowmanville points went to Gareth with 1 goal, 2 assists; Greg Healey, Brad and Troy with 1 goal and 2 assists each; 1 goal to Zenon Nelson, Mark and Neil Taylor; and 1 assist to Tony, Rob, Stephen, Shane, Dean, Greg Goode and Nick. On November 22, Stouff- ville brought their team to Darlington for a league game. After one period of play the teams were tied' with 4 goals each and it looked like we might be in for a close game, but the Toros Toros took a two goal lead in the second and came out after after the flood to score 4 third period goals. Stouff ville scored 1 in the 3rd to make it a 10-5 win for the Toros. Bowmanville's goals were earned by good passing and second effort. Shane got 2 goals, 1 assist; Rob 2 goals; Greg Healey 1 goal, 3 assists; Brad and Nick 1 goal, 1 assist assist each; Stephen and Gareth Gareth 1 goal, 2 assists each, 2 assists for Mark, Troy and Greg Goode; and an assist for Dean, Guy and Tony. The boys will have to be on their toes this week when they play in the Ajax International International Tournament against London, Burlington and Scarborough. Good Luck, boys! Halminen Midgets on a Winning Winning Streak On Saturday, November 14 the Halminen Major Midgets played an exhibition game hosted by the Oshawa AA Rotary Club. The Toros came out ahead 3-2 after three periods of tough hockey. hockey. Nick Dennis and Troy Harness scored for the Toros in the first period with Gareth Gareth Stone, Brad Carnegie, Greg Goode and Mark Tripp assisting. Oshawa came back in the second period to close the gap by one goal only to have Greg Goode get another for Bowmanville, with the help of Britt Cole and Troy Harness. Oshawa got the only goal of the third period, but the Toros held their one goal lead for the rest of the game. The next night the Halminen Halminen boys hosted and AA team from Newmarket at Darlington Darlington Arena, getting their second second win of the weekend. Again, the Toros displayed speed, patience and their passing talents to get 8 goals to Newmarket's 2. Bowmanville took a 3-0 lead in the first period with goals by Greg Healey, Mark Tripp, Rob Real, Tony Van- Hoof and Guy Freeman. Britt Cole scored in the second second period on a hard shot from the blue line, assisted by Mark and Guy. Newmarket Newmarket scored their first goal after after intercepting a pass at their own blue line. Brad Carnegie scored late in the period after Nick and Gareth set him up. Newmarket came out after the flood to score a quick goal while the teams were 4 a side, but the Toros came back with three more before the game was over. These goals came from Nick, Greg Healey (second of the night), and Tony with Brad, Troy, Britt, Stephen and Greg Healey earning the assists. Darrin Bunker and Burke Lush did a fine job again between between the pipes. Hutton Maintains First Place At Darlington Arena on November 14. the first and second place teams in the Atom Division met for the big showdown. In this encounter. encounter. the Hutton team defeated J & J by a 5-2 score. The final score did not give a true indication as to how close the game was. Both Rob Robbins and Steve Sargent were forced to make many great saves. Les McCrory was the big scorer for the Truckers, connecting for two goals. The other goal scorers were Mark Read. Curtis Cour- ncyea and Chad Veinot.The players picking up assists were Chad Veinot, 2, Greg Knox, Jack Laverty and Mike Tallotti. The defence for the Truckers played a solid game' with Darren Allin playing his best game of the year. This was a complete team effort and should be a good indication of what the future future will bring. The Truckers Truckers are hoping that the Bowmanville Arena gets going so they can get back on schedule. Hospital Lge.
