By Nettie Aiken Now we are into the Advent Advent Season, which began officially on Sunday, November November 30th, and the St. Thomas More Parish got us all in the mood. On the last Saturday afternoon afternoon of November, at the beginning of the Advent season, this Parish held its annual Christmas Bazaar in the Pontypool Community Centre. The hall looked very festive. There were raffle prizes, a Penny Sale, handcrafted items suitable for gifts, white elephant sale, baked goods sale and a very refreshing refreshing tea room, where one could casually socialize and think over purchases. There was even music provided provided at the piano. It was lovely to have the children helping along with their parents. With the weather cooperating, the attendance attendance was good. The raffle draws and Penny Sale completions took place around 4:00 p.m. The children figured prominently, prominently, actually making the draws by turns, with Father Tom Lynch .graciously assisting assisting and making the announcements. announcements. The following following were successful with the raffles: Terrarium - Rosina Arsenault, Subdivision, Pontypool; Mirror-Kimber- lee Libbenga, Subdivision, Pontypool; and Cedar Chest - May Spencer, Stonecliffe, Ontario. On the first Sunday of Advent, Advent, Jane White and Nelly Michel again led our Pontypool Pontypool congregation in worship. worship. Our minister prepared prepared the service and Jane and Nelly were involved with its delivery. There was a beautiful Call To Worship with leader thoughts and people responses, responses, followed by the Lord's Prayer. The first hymn was the well-known and beloved carol "Hark The Herald Angels Sing." The children were downstairs downstairs for the entire service practising their parts for the White Gift Service on Sunday, December 7th. The Advent Wreath was initiated, with the first candle, candle, the color, purple, standing for hope and penitence. penitence. Paul Quirk was involved involved with the lighting of the flame. The meditation theme was, very appropriately, "In Preparation." Not only should decorating, baking, etc. be done, but the question question asked "What Gift Will You Be Giving To Christ?" It was short but very well thought out. Please pray that Rev.; Heather Smith recovers speedily from this bit of ill health, and is continually enabled to serve the churches of Bethany and Pontypool, her own family, and the communities, in its outreach. Partly as a réponse to the sermon, and because the roads and weather conditions conditions were good, your correspondent correspondent and her husband husband went on a trip to Newcastle Newcastle to visit Horace Peck in the Nel-Gor Castle Nursing Nursing Home. He was extremely extremely happy to see us, and shared an interest in our pictures, mostly from our western holiday experience. experience. We also left a copy of the last issue of the Canadian Canadian Statesman with two of my columns, for him to read at his leisure. He would love to have more visitors, as it helps to pass the long, lonely hours of the day. There was good news at bowling on Monday, December December 1st. Sam Not Happy with Reaction To Company Closings in Province by Rob Savage MPP Sam Cureatz says he's not happy with the attitude attitude shown by Liberals and Conservatives towards major company shutdowns in the province. In an address to the provincial provincial parliament on Nov. 24, Mr. Cureatz said the government's government's reaction to the Goodyear closing in Etobicoke "is not good enough." "This is the opportunity for all the government members to take some leadership, with the help of all members of the chamber, to devise a formula formula whereby we can become become adjusted to the kinds of drastic impacts that have taken place in our province," province," he said. Mr. Cureatz chastised government officials for concentrating on shutdowns shutdowns and layoffs for only a short period of time and planning no action. He said every member will make a statement that appeases the press and the television audience watching watching the parliamentary debates, debates, and then forget about the incident. "(The concern) will be highly focused for a maximum of two days, and then we will all forget about it, because we have other pressing issues in our ridings." ridings." . Mr. Cureatz said he sympathizes sympathizes with the 1,500 people in Etobicoke who will be out of work. He said a move made by Goodyear a couple of years ago caused the people in Bowmanville to be frustrated frustrated because it led to a reduction reduction in jobs. And he said he remembered remembered times when the Provincial Provincial Government was in power and they were faced with layoffs in the province. Mr. Cureatz told parliament parliament members that reports were written but nothing was really accomplished. He argued in favor of a step-by-step formula which would reduce the impact on people who have to be retrained retrained and which would possibly offer stimulation to keep a plant from closing. Basing his idea on policies in western Europe, Mr, Cureatz said increased participation between businesses businesses and , government could reduce the affects that are felt in the province right now when a company announces a closing.
