x Midgets Split Games in Port Perry Tournament ' The Flying Dutchman Midgets got off to a flying start in the Port Perry tournament last weekend by downing Oshawa Red Wings 4- 2. It actually wasn't all that easy as Oshawa struck first to gain a 2-0 lead. Four unanswered goals by the ' Midget Toros salted away the ' victory. Glen Campbell picked up a pair with George Pithie and Troy Harness adding single goals. Burke Lush turned aside 16 shots and picked up an assist on George's goal. The second game saw Gananoque at the other end of the ice. They came with strong skating, controlled passing and steady goaltending. With the score tied at the end of regulation time, over time was the verdict. David Fairey and Mike Gallant supplied the goals for the Toros with Scott Webster turning aside 14 shots and picking up an assist. The overtime period was a senes , of one minute shifts, with each team removing a player ; every minute. Gananoque outshot our boys 4-0 and tallied the winner with 1:30 left in the game. Sunday evening saw the Oshawa Red Wings again the opposition. It was a close game up to the last six minutes of the game, when Glen Campbell broke the 3-3 tie with David Fairey and Britt Cole adding the insurance markers. Mark Tripp, Glen Campbell and George Pithie notched the first three markers. Glen had ■two goals and two assists and "Davïd Fairey added two assists to his goal. Burke Lush and Scott Webster shared the goaltending duties supplying consistent puck stopping when necessary. The non-players seem to out number the players these days with John Romano, Paul Stainton, Shawn Rekker and Chris Shmyr on the sidelines. Chris suffered a fractured wrist in the tournament last Saturday. Lindsay will supply the opposition next Sunday at 5:00 p.m. , < :. , The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 19,1986 7 Recreation Hockey League Standings ■ :'V : > V: ■ g : ■ - i lx- B.R.H.L. The streak climbed to 3 when ) the herd travelled to Port 'Perry and beat their arch rivals'4-1. r; On Saturday, Nov. 8 the Toros played host to Port " ,i Perry who were out to avenge their'4-1 loss suffered two nights earlier. The 1 , game started out with both teams having good sdoring opportunities, but it j wasn't until midway through the first period the herd did !, some damage. Ryan Stewart made a smart play behind the Port Perry net, faking out the goalie and g stuffing the puck into the empty side of the net. Cory i i,Strand added to the lead just 3 minutes later taking a good 0 , pass from Brad Johnston and picking the lower corner of the [.cage. ; The first period was. very , ,tame but, that was about to change. Port came out of the ? . .gate flying in the second and 'took it to. the Toros. Port E . scored the first goal of the last long. Matt Dykstra redirected a Joel Crombie pass behind an outstretched Port Perry goalie with the other assist going to Terry VanLonden. Port Perry scored what proved to be their final goal one minute later. Then it was the Paul "The Wall" Zuicher show. Facing quite a few shots, Paul made it look easy. The third period featured lots of hard hitting and that seemed to spark the Toro team. Although the Toros were slapped with 10 minutes worth of penalties in the final period, they kept Port off the score board thanks to the strong defensive play of Mark Breckenridge, Ron Luxton, Dan Qouillard, Neil Bateman, Dan Kooy and Matt Aitken "and the fine penalty killing of Shawn McFadyn, Tyler Stokes, Ryan Stewart, Terry VanLonden, Matt Dykstra, Joel Crombie, Brad Johnston and Mark Ferguson. The Toros scored two more goals, one by Mark Ferguson on a hard shot from the slot, set up by newcomer Brad Johnston. Thén Brad got ohé himself on a good individual effort. The team is coached by Gerry Snowden. The boys played their first game against Grafton and won 4-0. The two goal keepers Scott Hanthorn and Mike Ruthard shared in the shut out. Grafton's goalkeeper also played a strong game and was responsible for keeping the score down to four. The Bowmanville team skated well, checked well and generally worked hard. Steven Bizi opened the scoring in the first period assisted by Ian Knight. Both players gave a fine account of themselves throughout the game. Marc Peirce scored the second goal, driving in a rebound from a fine shot from the point by Jim McGregor. Jan Vanderheyden did some fine work along the boards to set-up the third goal, he centered a pass to Martin who wasted no time in getting a shot away. A good effort by Ian resulted in him scoring the last goal in the game. Keep up the good work boys.
