It is unfortunate that players do not put their names on the back of the cards even when asked to do so by the President. It is more so when it concerns members of your own club and just makes the job of the scribe that much harder. This will be the last home tournament for Bowmanville this year but if the weather is fine we are expecting Port Hope for a friendly visit this coming Sunday, August 31st. Our thanks to Ross Hall for painting the light standards earlier and the end boards this last week, also for rolling the green when called upon. Although the number of greens will be curtailed, we understand there will be bowling and jitneys until the end of the season, possibly Sept. 28th, 1986. Our Canadian Tire midgets were able to cope with a very sandy diamond to capture both ends of a double-header, the series and the right to represent East and Central Ontario in the All-Ontario "C" Dlavdowns next weekend. The location was Glanbrook Sports Centre, west of Hamilton and the setting was, dust, dust and more dust. Except for a small portion of grass on the infield the remainder was sand which caused the ball to die where it landed. There was to have been a game at Soper on Saturday but it was cancelled due to rain. The agreement was that if Bowmanville won the first game in Glanbrook a second game would be played therefore not forcing the visitors to possibly lose the series with no home game. The Canadian Tire crew handily won the first game 16- 2 and powered through the second with an 11-2 win. TTie condition of the dirt part of the diamond and the wind led to several errors but our boys played aggressively and worked hard to compensate for the conditions. Mike Gallant controlled the mound in the first game scattering 8 hits, allowing 2 earned runs, walked only one while striking out 2. Mike helped his own cause with one hit and by scoring twice. Kevin Smith, took full advantage of the sand with 4 bunt singles driving in 3 runs. David Fairey also had 3 R.B.I.'s and a double. Scott Webster drove in two runs, Mike Smith, Dan Annis, Mike Lugtenburg and Chris Hall had one R.B.I. each. Besides, Kevin's 4 hit performance, Hall had 3, Annis 2, Paul Gallant, M. Gallant and Fairey each had one. The second game started more slowly with Glanbrook carrying a 1-0 lead into the third. Chris Hall struggled a bit on the mound to begin with but settled down to his rhythm and full control. Chris had a no-hitter going into the sixth but allowed only 3 hits over the 9 innings, while fanning 8, walking 6 and surrendering 2 unearned runs. Scott Webster and Mike Gallant led the way with 3 hits each, helped by Dan Annis, Chris Hall and Paul Gallant's triples. Kevin Smith, David Fairey, Jeff Bartlett and Scott Munro each had singles. Kevin Smith once again kept things alive with his well-placed bunts forcing the opposition into several errors. Hall, Bartlett, Webster and K. Smith supplied 2 R.B.I.'s each. Kevin Smith turned in a sparkling performance in centre field. The All-Ontario finals will be held in Waterloo next weekend against a team from the far west of Southern Ontario. The series will be a two of three with 2 games probably being played on Saturday and the deciding game if necessary on Sunday. This team has been able to meet, and cope with all forms of adversity under the guidance of Dale Gallant, and Bob Fairey and they deserve our best wishes and support. If you see Dale or Bob or any of the following players wish them good luck and let them know Bowmanville is behind them. 77 Dan Annis (6), 27 Kevin Smith (8), 66 David Fairey (4), 72 Scott Webster (2,9), 55 Scott Veals (3), 44 Mike Smith (7), 00 Mike Gallant (1, 7), 22 Chris Hall (1, 3), 16 Scott Munro (2, 9), 09 Rob Real (5 - 4), 33 Mike Lugtenburg (5), 12 Jeff Bartlett (1 - 5), 99 Tim Smith (9), 29 Paul Gallant (7, 4), 19 Michael Houston (7,4), ORONO HORSE -- The homebred gelding, Robin Wonder, an Orono horse trained by Jack Williams of Orono for his co-partner Doug Gamsby of Guelph left last week to represent Canada at the prestigious trotting race, the Roosevelt International at New York.
