She's Collected Salt and Pepper Shakers for Over 20 Years "I just love old things," said Helen Braybrook as she posed with some of her 538 sets of salt and pep per shakers. Mrs. Braybrook has been collecting sets since 1961. Lawn Bowlers in Action At Cobourg by Ab Mavin On Tuesday, July 29th, one team of seniors representing Bowmanville played at Cobourg, namely A. Mavin, Skip; P. Bathgate, Vice/ Skip', F. Blackburn, Lead. There were 9 teams entered which meant a playoff between two teams commencing commencing at 10 o'clock. Bowmanville Bowmanville drew a bye and played Cobourg, the winner of the first game! Bowmanville was 4 shots in the lead coming home and the skip called for a long end which should have ensured victory, but for some reason, the Cobourg team was 3 shots ahead when Skip, Ab Mavin came up to bowl and for some strange reason, his two bowls were short and the.last bowl of all was wide, while Cobourg. counted five shots to win the game. Needless to say Ab is still scratching his head wondering wondering what happened in a game he should never have lost, Incidentally, Ab and his wife Mabel, along with Gwen Coombes attended the 50th wedding anniversary of Peter and Rena Bathgate held at the Legion Hall on Friday the 1st of August. A very good crowd was in attendance and I am sure Peter and Rena were happy to see all of their own friends from years ago. On Saturday, August 2nd, Doris and Oscar Wollstein, Ab and Mabel Mavin travelled to Port Hope to take part in the Jock Bennett Memorial Trophy consisting of mixed pairs. Ab and Mabel had a very enjoyable day even if everyone did have a rain delay but ended out of the money, losing all 3 games, Oscar and Doris did much better; winning winning 2 games with a total of 38, not high enough for prize money. Results were: 1 game high - T. Butcher, Cobourg 38; 2 game 2nd high - A. Terwille- gar, Oshawa 46 plus 2; 2 game high - J. Gordon, Cobourg 52; 3 game 2nd high - J. Morton, Port Hope 47; 3 game high - A. Hoskins, Cobourg 54. I wouldn't pay the exorbitant amount for a set like' he does sometimes." "I don't have too many plastic ones because the china ones are a better buy." Mrs. Braybrook is attached attached to all her salt and pepper shakers; she does not have a favourite one out of all the sets. "When I find something strange, I get excited about it," she admitted. "But if I had to pick just one set, I couldn't do it." Although many of the salt and pepper sets are from the Bowmanville area, Mrs. Braybrook has plenty from other countries as well. In her collection, there are salt and pepper shakers from England, Jamaica, Nashville, Florida, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Newfoundland, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Mexico and Africa. A number number of sets are made from what is called monkey glass, and they came from Hawaii. One of the most unusual sets Mrs. Braybrook ever received received was from her uncle. At first glance, they did not look unique. But this set, made in China, could be wound up and made to walk. I would like to thank him on behalf of the club and I am sure Ivan is very grateful. The big question is why isn't Town Council doing anything in regards to keeping the outside clean. Although we have numerous students employed by the town, no one seems to bother cleaning up around the arena or outside the Lawn Bowling Club. Rain held down the attendance at our last Jitney but we still had 1,12 end game. We hope to see more out in the future as the season is coming closer to the end.
