The volume of business isn't bad for something that began as a hobby. The trophies had been a part of the Hooper family's business for some time, but it was always in the background. background. Mr. Hooper said his father engraved trophies as a sideline business associated associated with his jewellery store. Mr. Hooper said he first began engraving trophies in the back of his brother's stereo shop on King Street. At that time, the back of the store was used for watch repairs, repairs, and Mr. Hooper would go in early in the morning and after work in the evening to work on trophies. Making trophies at the back of a stereo shop was not a great way to sell them, Mr. Hooper admits. "We didn't have the room to display display them." But when the family jewellery store moved to its new address and his brother went from the stereo to the watch business, business, Ron transformed the old stereo shop into • a trophy centre, He now provides trophies for the Bowmanville Minor Hockey Association and some local soccer, bowling, and baseball clubs. He says that between his father's jeweilry store and his trophy store, many items can be engraved. "Anything metal with a fairly flat surface surface can be engraved," he said. He explained thatengrav- ings for most trophies are fairly easily made. The engravings engravings are done on a printing press-type machine which has a slide rule and different types of print for letters. Letters can be engraved in script print, block print, and many other types. He said most people choose script print. "It looks nicer." The letters are engraved with an industrial diamond cutter. Once a person becomes becomes familiar with the various sizes of letters and learns to centre the engravings, engravings, the task becomes simple. simple. "Basically, it's just like tracing," he said. His machines can engrave engrave two lines at a time, so long engravings of 20 lines each may sometimes take some time to do. One thing Mr. Hooper doesn't get involved in is hand engravings. He said hand engravings are done through a powder process where a person etches out an engraving through the powder. "You almost have to be an artist to do it," he said. It might also be a few years before Mr. Hooper decides decides to invest in new computerized computerized engravers. He said he recently saw the $15,000 engravers at a show he went to. And he's staying away from engravers which cut into glass. He said glass engravings engravings aren't too difficult, but "there really isn't that much of a call for it." Therefore, he's happy to stick with the engravings he currently does. But that doesn't mean they're all routine. He has made some unusual engravings engravings in his time, although he figures the most unique for him were the ones he made for a pet cemetery. "You wouldn't believe some of the verses I put on those things," he said. "Some people saw the animals animals as part of their families, I guess." Most of the trophies he sells are pre-assembled, although although Mr. Hooper says he does construct trophies in his shop. He said the trophies he makes himself are actually cheaper than the preassembled ones. However, he does not actually actually mould the figurines at the top of the trophies, which are now made of nylon rather than metal so they're less likely to break. His services vary according according to customer needs. Some buyers are specific about the types of trophies they buy, hoping to get a walnut wood base and other particulars. Others are more concerned concerned with the cost. The average price for trophies is $6 and most teams need 30 to 40 trophies during one purchase. But since most of the engravings arc duplicated duplicated for the trophies, they can be done quickly and at modest cost. Like everything else these days, the trophy business business is fairly competitive. Although some people will still go to Toronto hoping to find a better deal, it's unlikely unlikely they'll find better service service than what's available at the local trophy shop.
