Boyhood and Later Memories One Saturday when I was about thirteen, another kid from my hometown and I hitched a ride into Toronto to see an exhibition baseball game between the Toronto Maple Leafs of the International International League and the Chicago Cubs of the National League. Gabby Hartnett, the catcher and Charlie Grimm, the first baseman were the stars of the Chicago team, at that time. It,was almost six o'clock that afternoon, when we got out of the Stadium and started hitch-hiking for home (Bowmanville is about 45 miles east of Toronto). The first few lifts only took us as far as Scarborough, out on the Kingston road. There were some wrestling matches going on outside, so we stopped to watch a few of the bouts. After about seven or eight, short rides, we reached the outskirts of Oshawa, this time, it was almost two o'clock in the morning. As we were walking through the main street, a night Constable Constable stopped us and took us back to the police station, Apparently two wards of the Ontario Training School for Boys, in Bowmanville had escaped from the school, earlier earlier that evening. The Constable Constable wouldn't believe us when we tried to tell him, that Bowmanville was our home town and he had us put into a cell. Eventually, after much waiting, he allowed me to telephone my father in Bowmanville. Bowmanville. It was about four thirty in the morning when Dad drove over to Oshawa, to have us released. When we finally reached home, the sun was just coming up. That ended, I think my hitchhiking! hitchhiking! C.L.R. REGULAR 8 SURER FREE PURE SPRING GINGER ALE, REGULAR a SUGAR FREE HIRES ROOT BEER.
