The Honourable Elmer MacKay, Minister of National Revenue, described the program program as an outstanding example example of a government department department working closely with the community. "This program helps people obtain much- needed assistance when, for a variety of reasons, they can't complete their tax returns themselves," said Mr. MacKay. MacKay. Now in its tenth year, the Volunteer Program works at the community level through the 29 District Taxation Offices across Canada. These offices hold training sessions for the volunteers every tax filing season. While the volunteers volunteers don't emerge as tax experts, they do become familiar with the fundamentals fundamentals of completing straightforward straightforward returns. Training sessions in most District Offices begin in mid- February. Interested volunteer volunteer agencies or groups contact contact the District Office early in the year and arrange for sessions sessions at a convenient time and place. The sessions normally last three or four hours with one or two qualified instructors instructors from the local District Office and approximately 15 volunteers in attendance. Individual Individual volunteers, not associated associated with a recognized agency, may join a training session by calling the District Office themselves. Volunteers who come back year after year - and the program program has many "repeaters" - are sometimes offered separate training sessions devoted devoted exclusively to new legislation legislation or changes in the Tax Guide. Special sessions can also be arranged in some cases for volunteers dealing mainly with the concerns of specific groups of taxpayers within the community, such as senior citizens. When their training session is over, volunteers are given a Volunteer Handbook to refer to on a day-to-day basis. Volunteers are also encouraged encouraged to contact their in structors at any time if specific specific tax problems arise "on the job".
