Winter, Chairman Publicity Committee Taking time out to work on a special pastime can be both rewarding and enjoyable as many students discovered during Knox Christian School's Hobby Week. Pictured here displaying some of his designs is wood carver Henk Kobes. "Creating" a wood sculpture takes on a new meaning for someone like Henk Kobes who actually starts his work as soon as the tree begins to root. For the past ten years, the Hampton nursery owner has extended his interest in trees to include _not only their planting and growth, but also their potential as suitable carving material . after they've aged. In essence, Mr. Kobes is one of the true artisitic creators of this art form -- having watched his pieces magically transform from tiny seeds to beautifully carved sculptures. The local man, who has chosen trees as his career and woodwork as his pastime, pastime, was one of the more interesting guests at Knox Christian School's Hobby Week. "So far I've carved about 100 sculptures," explained Mr. Kobes. "Some are hanging hanging on my wall, most were given away as gifts." During his fascinating talk to the youngsters, Henk described how he arrives at the awe-inspiring finished product. "Most of my ideas come from pictures and photographs," photographs," said the speaker. "I simply take the image I want and trace it onto the wood using a sharp cutter." The self-taught Holland native produces work ranging ranging from abstract Indian- like designs to realistic portraits portraits of his children; all of which he completes in his spare time. Of course, with six youngsters youngsters around the house and a busy nursery to manage, it is a wonder that Mr. Kobes finds any free mo ments to himself. "Sculpting is a relaxing hobby for me," said the artist. artist. "It takes my mind off of work." But looking at Henk's collection collection of wood carvings its difficult to believe that he doesn't sculpt for a living, or at least- make some money with it on the side. "Quite a few people have asked to buy my work," explained the owner of Henk Kobes Nursery jn Hampton, adding that, "I never sell my crafts because because then it wouldn't be a hobby anymore. It would be work." The young audience thoroughly enjoyed its local handyman's visit, learning that there are plenty of interesting interesting people with fascinating fascinating pastimes right in their own community.
