Another man builds a lightweight boat and sails across the ocean alone, .while yet another tries the crossing by balloon. Most of us marvel at such perilous feats; blithely unaware that we flirt with death just as much as these dare-devils. We like to think of life as a gamble and find it convenient to ignore the odds. Health experts give us good advice about living and we disregard it. Take heart disease and stroke for example. It can affect anyone who delights in . these risks: One or two packs i of cigarettes a day; ignoring f regular checkups for high blood pressure; a diet laden with saturated fats and cholesterol; a disregard for weight control and an aversion to exercise. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario calls these the risk factors of heart attack and stroke. They cause most of the deaths due to heart disease and stroke in Canada each year. Many of these deaths are premature. Heart disease and stroke is the leading killer of men and women aged 45 - 64, usually at the peak of their earning power and productivity. The economic cost to Canada is staggering and there is no way of calculating the personal tragedy to families deprived of wage earners at an early age. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario Patrick G. Deegan DENTURE THERAPY CLINIC 5 GEORGE STREET BOWMANVILLE 623-4473 or 623-6477 believes that, by modifying these risk factors, it is possible to reduce the chances of heart attack and stroke. Unfortunately, these are certain risk factors which can't be altered - heredity, sex and age. The major cause of heart attack and stroke is hardening of the arteries - arteriosclerosis. arteriosclerosis. This is a progressive disease in which fatty deposits accumulate on the walls of the arteries, much like the buildup buildup of lime in a water pipe over the years. Eventually, the artery channels become so narrow that blood can no longer reach the heart or brain centres. The result is a heart attack of stroke. . Everyone, from young children to great' ' grandparents, grandparents, has arteriosclerosis arteriosclerosis to a degree. It can begin early in life, but its development development varies in individuals and can be slowed by controlling the coronary risk factors. It's never too late to reassess your lifestyle and cut down your risk. See your doctor for a blood pressure test. If it's high, it can be controlled with drugs or diet therapy. Even though we teach our children never to talk to strangers, there are exceptions exceptions to the rule. Probably Probably the most obvious safe; stranger is the uniformed police officer who patrols your community. Yourchild should be taught to depend on the officer if he or she needs help. Another safe stranger is the BLOCK PARENT, PARENT, and I would like to tell you about this fine organization. organization. Across Canada the BLOCK PARENT program has proven to be very effective effective in reducing molestations, molestations, rapes and break-ins. It also gives assistance in a "help away from home" manner when needed. But who are these BLOCK PARENTS? PARENTS? What are they like? A BLOCK PARENT is any responsible adult who cares enough about the well-being of the children and other persons to volunteer volunteer their home as a safe refuge refuge when a need arises. A BLOCK PARENT has no legal status except as a pri- . vate citizen who volunteers to act responsibly in an emergency situation. To ensure ensure the home is a safe one, all adults in the home have to be screened by the police before they can obtain a BLOCK PARENT sign. In fact the sign is the property of the BLOCK PARENT organization organization and can be recalled recalled at any time if the status of the home changes. BLOCK PARENT homes are re-assessed evep r so often by the organization to make sure the home is still a safe place. The BLOCK PARENT sign is displayed usually in the front window of the home where it can be easily viewed from the street. Par ents, teachers and police officers officers teach our children how to'recognize the sign and when to use it. They are taught to use the home only in the case of an emergency, (i.e. If they are lost, frightened, bullied or followed followed by a stranger or a stray animal). If they need help because of illness or injuries, a BLOCK PARENT will offer assistance to persons persons in distress by phoning the necessary emergency number or the home of the child. A BLOCK PARENT does not: - provide food or drink, provide toilet facilities, facilities, transport anybody, administer administer first-aid, open the door to just anyone (they are advised to talk through a locked screen door and then, phone for help). By the way, a BLOCK PARENT does not have to be home and available 24 hrs. a day. When unavailable for any reason (i.e. sleeping, ill, out, busy, etc.) the sign is simply removed from the window. Absence of the sign DOES NOT mean the house is unattended. unattended. Some BLOCK PARENTS work all day, but, by putting the sign up for a few hours each week they can be of value to the community. A person might ask: - How often is a BLOCK PARENT used? That no one calls upon our BLOCK PARENTS PARENTS is the greatest complaint. complaint. Yet lack of incidents demonstrates the success of the program. By deterring the trouble makers in our neighborhood the BLOCK PARENT makes it a safer place to live. We are also ad vertising that our children are being protected by a community that cares! I'm a BLOCK PARENT. Maybe you would like to be one. If you are interested call your local Block Parent Committee. Note: - Please do your part by explaining the program program to your children and elderly elderly parents (you don't have to be a child to use a BLOCK PARENT home). Instruct Instruct your children to know their name, address, and phone number and where possible to carry identification. Let them know they may hold their BLOCK PARENTS in high regard. Assure them that BLOCK PARENT homes are an emergency "home away from home." Hi! I'm Christopher John Saunders. I celebrated my 1st birthday on February 1,1986. This is mv big brother Brant who is 3. Tour of Winter Wildlife Planned for F ebruary 9 It can be difficult enough for us to deal with winter, so consider what it would be like to be a wild animal. They don't have the luxuries of heated houses or extra clothing to bundle up in, as we do. However, many animals do retreat into their own homes for the winter, not to be seen again until spring. Others will grow new, thicker, warmer coats of their own. Woodchucks, chipmunks, raccoons, deer and bats all have different ways of coping with the harsh Ontario winters. In fact, every form of wildlife must adapt to this tt season if they are to survive. With this in mind, winter can be seen as a more interesting, if not more hospitable time of year. Join the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority on Sunday, February 9 to participate in a tour of Harmony Valley Conservation Area. The outing begins at 1:00 p.m. from the parking lot, and will focus on wildlife's adaptations to winter. With luck, some of the local animals and many different birds will put in an appearance. There is generally a wide variety of tracks and other signs of life. Harmony Valley Conservation Conservation Area is located on Grandview Street North. Access is either east from Harmony Road via Corbett's Road or south from Taunton Road on Grandview Street.
