They out-hustled and out-skated the Bowmanville Club for much of the period. Only some fine goaltending by Kevin Zarosky prevented Little Britain from having a bigger lead going into the second period. At the other end, Little Britain's Ron Mitchell kept the Toros off the score sheet with some solid goaltending of his own until Nicky Dennis finished off a nice passing play from Rob Real and Craig Deblois to make it a 2 -1 game with just over a minute left in the first period. Mark Tripp gave the Toros a 3 - 2 lead when he took a pass from Gareth Stone and rushed down the right wing and fired a shot past the Little Britain goalie. Little Britain got that one back when they had Bowmanville Bowmanville running around their own end trying to gain control of the puck. Little Britain's Ian Smith swung around the Bowmanville net and tucked the puck into the short side between the post and the pad of a stickless Bowmanville netminder. Less than two minutes after the Toros go-ahead goal, a tough Little Britain team tied the game again at 4 - 4, Bowmanville went ahead once again as Mark Tripp tallied on a power-play effort assisted by Dean Baumhauer and Rob Real only to have the pesky Little Britain team tie the game ten seconds later. Gareth Stone made it 6 - 5 with his second goal of the game with assists going to Mark Tripp and Rob Real. Oak Ridges faced-off to determine the winner of the Brighton "A" Championship. As in the previous game, Bowmanville started off slowly and getting the only goal of the opening period with just 0:11 seconds left when Greg Goode connected to make it 1-0. Gareth Stone and Mark Tripp assisted. Oak Ridges had some excellent excellent scoring opportunities in the period, but thanks to some great goaltending by Bowmanville's Burke Lush, the Toros carried a slim 1 - 0 lead going into the second period. On a good second effort by Nicky Dennis, the Toros made it 2-0. Troy Mutton started the play and fed a pass to Rob Real who in turn gave it to Dennis. Dennis went through the defence and let a shot go that the Oak Ridge's goalie stopped but lost sight of. Dennis following up and being checked by this time, made a one-handed stab at the rebound to put it past the Oak Ridges' goalie. Dean Baumhauer made it 3 - 0 with less than a minute left in the second, Greg Goode and Nicky Dennis assisting. In the third, Oak Ridges got their only goal of the game on a bit of a fluke. They let a shot go from the point and Burke Lush appeared to have the low shot lined up when it hit a Toro defenceman and deflected into the upper corner of the net. The game ended 3 - 1 and Mark Tripp, as captain, accepted the trophy as "A" Division Champions on behalf of the other team members. Rob Real was selected as Bowmanville's M.V.P. in the game. During their final two league games the St. Mary's Cement plant boys tallied 27 times while only allowing 3 goals against. The senior Toros hosted Pickering Village on Wednesday in the Toro corral at Darlington and handed them a shellacing to the tune of 15-1. David Smith turned away 20 shots while the flying forward and defense crew peppered Pickering's goal with 70 shots. The goal scorers were Scott Page (2), George Pithie (2), Kelly Armstrong (2) , Shawn Rekker (2), and Paul Stainton, Jamie Downing, Jamie Lever, Dave Tuepah, David Fairey, Mike Gallant and Glen Campbell with singles. We feel it is definitely a credit to our hockey club, the depth and team work to have 11 players and out of 14 share in the scoring. Larry Perris, John Romaine and Bob McArthur all recorded assists as well as the other players who scored. The Midget Toros' 50th game of the season was played in Port Hope on Friday night. Once again the scoring eyes were sharp with 12 goals being scored while allowing the opposition only two. Once the game was under control, the St. Mary's boys became very offensive minded and as a result Port Hope had several break-aways, 2 on l's and 3 on 2's. The defense and Scott Webster in net were able to cope with all but two of these situations. The scorers were: Scott Page (3), George Pithie (3) , Mike Gallant (2), Kelly Armstrong, Jamie Lever, Larry Perris and Paul Stainton. The Major Midgets have been working together well as a team with excellent passing and game concentration which is very encouraging as wè head into the stretch drive. Pyramid Points The St. Mary's Midgets having just completed 50 games, have scored 276 goals while allowing 157. They have outshot the opposition 1800 to 1400 while recording 6 shut outs. Their record is 38 wins, 10 losses and two ties. This coming Wednesday the Toros host the strong BB squad from Port Perry in an exhibition game. The play-off picture appears to be a round-robin with Trenton and Cobourg to start within two weeks and to conclude by February 23rd. The top of the pyramid this week goes to George Pithie and Kelly Balson. George has been a regular with this group for several years and is an excellent skater and has developed a dynamic shot which has scored several key goals for the team. With his excellent skating and puck control, young Mr. Pithie is an extremely efficient penalty- killer and has contributed to several short handed goals. Last year he played for the Minor Midgets and notched 83 points in 60 games. George has played 47 games, scored 31 goals, notched 31 assists for 62 points, picked up 78 minutes in penalties and held a plus 42 in the plus-minus department. Kelly Balson has been on the Toro scene for about 5 years. He played for the Major Midgets last year and received an extra year of Midget due to the age change. Kelly is an excellent puck- handler and a good skater. He has missed several games due to an injured hand, and as a result has only played 31 games. During this time he has 17 goals, 26 assists for 43 points, has accumulated 30 minutes in penalties and has a plus 14 defensively. Town and Country Lge.
