Bowmanville, January 8,1986 9 Durham Bantam 2's Make it to Finals Skinner's Win 4 C' Championship December 14th, the Durham Building Bantams Participated in the Pickering Tournament. Their first opponent was Ajax, who is a rival in their regular loop. This was a defensive battle as play went end to end with no scoring results until the 8:23 mark of the 2nd period. The Durham Building Toros took a 1-0 lead at that point when Jeff Reynolds slipped one by the Ajax netminder with the help of Brad Carnegie. The play tightened up again for the remainder of that period, and halfway into the 3rd. Chris Hall found the mark at 6:02 of the 3rd with Troy Harness and Troy Neill earning the assists. The Durham Building Bantams held Ajax off for the balance of the game to earn the 2-0 victory. Credit for the well-deserved shut-out goes to Paul Gallant. The 2nd game of this tournament was another close defensive battle, with the Durham Building boys facing Pickering Village. Again the 1st period was scoreless, and again Jeff Reynolds got the Durham Toros on the scoreboard, when he notched his 2nd in as many games at 5:10 of the 2nd with Greg Healey and Shane Armstrong getting the assists. With just 9 seconds remaining in the 2nd period Doug Lever increased the Toro lead to 2-0 and Shane Armstrong and Greg Healey were there again to pick up the assists. Pickering Village narrowed the gap to 2-1 with just 1:51 remaining in the 3rd, and again the Durham Building Bantams held on to earn the victory. Another Good effort between the Toro pipes, this time by Darrin Bunker. These 2 victories earned the Durham Building Supplies Bantams a birth in the "A" final, which took place on Sunday, Dec. 15th. A much tougher opponent, the L.N.H.L. Black Hawks, who are the Majors representing Oshawa in the "A" O.M.H.A. Playoffs were just too strong for the Durham Building Bunch. The Durham Building team gave a valiant effort however, and had the Black Hawks worried for a while. Especially when the Toros opened the scoring and held a short-lived 1-0 lead. Chris Hall scored the lone Toro goal with the assistance of Troy Harness. The Black Hawks came back just over 2 minutes later to even things up and continued to pick away scoring 5 more times, to earn their 6-1 victory. Despite the score it was a good effort - Nice try Toros. On Saturday, Dec. 21st the Durham Building Bantams hosted Ajax in a league game, unfortunately they let a 3 goal lead slip away, and had to settle for a 5-5 draw. Brad Carnegie started things off just .41 seconds into the game with Jeff Reynolds assisting. Ajax however, stormed back scoring twice to take the lead. Undaunted by the Ajax flourish, the Durham Building boys put it together and bounced back with 3 more in the 1st period and 1 more in the 2nd. Troy Harness scored Checker's V ariety Has Impressive Half Season To finish off the 1985 year, the Toro II Team will be away in Orillia for their 1st tournament of the year. The Toros continued their fine play of the year with 3 wins and 2 losses in their last 5 games, where they outscored their opposition 25-18. Dec. 16th (Home) against Whitby Whitby came out to play this game and in an old fashioned shut-out came away with a 7-5 win against the Toros. The Toros tied the game at 4-4 at the 6 min. mark of the 3rd period but Whitby scored 3 unanswered goals to cement this win before the Toros scored with 1 minute left in the game. Steve deBlois led the way with 1 goal - 3 assists, while Jeff White and John Whittaker had 1 goal -1 assist each. Single goals went to Chris McCarthy and Matt Dykstra while Mark Bradley, Craig Forsey and Corey Shend added single assists. A tough loss as 1st place was in their grasp. Dec. 17th (Away) against Ajax This game was never in doubt as the Toros scored a lopsided 7-0 win over Ajax. The Toros scored 3 times-in a tough battle as we were missing our tough little center Matt Dykstra and another center Steve Deblois. However our excellent defence corps of Mark Bradley, Matt Aitken, Dan Kooy and David Couillord stopped Cobourg time and time again. The goal tending of Brendin Osmond kept us in this game also, as the Toros finally skated to a 3-1 victory. Jeff White scored first from John Whittaker, and Corey Strend scored also from John with Chris McCarthy finishing it off from Craig Forsey and Collin Taggart. This arena is the coldest around and the Toro players must be awarded for playing their hearts out with only 2 full lines. Hope they will keep their Christmas momentos. Dec. 21 Home vs. Ajax This league game saw the Toros skate away with a 7-2 victory' and once again Matt Dykstra led the way with 4 goals - 2 assists. Chris McCarthy chipped in with another 2 goals while Craig Forsey had 1 goal - 1 assist. Also picking up points were Mark Bradley 2 assists and single assists to Dan Couillard, Jeff White, and the 1st and last periods and • ' Brandon Osmond; A solid goal were all over Ajax throughout this game. Matt Dykstra led the way with 1 goal, 5 assists followed by Chris McCarthy and Corey Shend with 2 goals each. Single goals were scored by Collin Taggart and Craig Forsey and Mark Bradley added 2 assists. Good game for Toro squad after a tough loss the night before. Dec. 19 (Away) at Cobourg The game proved to be quite tending job by Jamie Doyle who is leading the club with his goal against average. This was an important 2 points for the Toros in league play. Dec. 23 Home vs. Whitby Now the Toros have come full circle and as before ended up on the short end of a 8-3 loss. Missing for this game were Collin Taggart (How cold was it in Florida? ), Steve Deblois (How are grandparents in the North?) and John Whittaker (Do we know about Christmas parties?). This left us with only eight skaters and much thanks to Novice Coach George Vaughn for letting us use his two Star players, Ryan Robinson and Gary Adams. Even though these two players just came off the ice from their practice, they played like true sportsmen and gave their all, as they noted in the dressing room after the game - "Boy, was it fast." They both earned points in the game and played well on the wings even though they are Centers. Good luck with your Novice Team. Scoring for Bowmanville were Matt Dykstra with 2, and Corey Strand. Assists were also earned by Jeff White and Craig Forsey. A tough loss but Whitby has their Toro number and lead the season 3 wins and 1 loss. Summary This Toro II Team is a contender as its 20 wins - 8 losses - 6 ties indicate. This team is scoring well over 5 goals per game with Matt Dykstra leading the way with 99 points. He may be small but his on ice strength and mental aptitude must be applauded. The other forward players are^, all excellent play makers and pass the puck extremely well. Hie defense and goaltending is strong allowing only 3 goals per game. With 8 Minor (10 year olds) and 6 Major (11 year olds) age players on this team, the success this team has achieved will certainly be carried over to next year. The coaching has been a steading influence on the club and players now know their roles. A big welcome back goes to Terry Kellett who has been sidelined with a broken collarbone. Terry was flying, and scored twice, once with the assistance of Brad Carnegie and Jeff Reynolds, and once unassisted. Things appeared to be well under control as the 3rd period began and the Durham Building boys held a 5-2 lead. Ajax, however, were not finished and they outskated and outmuscled the Toros to the tune of 3 more goals and snatched the victory out from under the Toro noses. The Durham Building Supplies Bantams left that Ajax game behind them, and prepared themselves for the Bowmanville major "A" tournament held Dec. 26th - 29th. Their 1st game was bright and early on the 27th at 8 a.m. against West Mall, a team from Etobicoke. Both teams started off rather slowly, but West Mall carried the play through the 1st two periods. It was West Mall who opened the scoring in the 2nd period at 9:11, but the Toros held tight and began to come on. At 1:23 of the 2nd, Scott Brunt picked up a pass from Shane Armstrong and put it over a mass of bodies into the top corner to even things up for the Durham Building Toros. West Mall took the lead 2-1 just .28 seconds into the 3rd, but Chris Hall tied things up with a back hand shot with the help of Troy Neill just 3:17 seconds later. With 6:56 remaining in the game Terry Kellett notched the winner on a beautiful passing play from Jeff Reynolds and Brad Carnegie. Game No. 2 saw the Durham Building Bantams pitted against Welland. A great team effort was responsible for a well-earned 5-3 victory for the Durham Building boys. Trailing 1-0 at the end of the 1st-, the Durham Toros got their act together and took the lead 3-2. In the 2nd frame Troy Harness started things off for the Toros at 9:14 with Neil Taylor and David Smith assisting. Brad Carnegie gave the Durham Toros the lead just .14 seconds later as he found the mark on a set-up by Terry Kellett. At 2:46 Terry Kellett beat the Welland netminder on a nice pass from Jeff Reynolds. Welland bounced back late in the 2nd and. again early in the 3rd to even things.up aL3. The Toros, kept plugging however and scored twice in 7 seconds to clinch the victory. Troy Harness got the winner with Chris Hall assisting, and Brad Carnegie got the insurance goal (his 2nd) from Jeff Reynolds. Way to go team ! The Durham Building Team really had their hands full in the 3rd game against Trenton on Saturday. They put forth a good effort but were not able to stay with this big fast aggressive group from Trenton. A scoreless 1st period due to hard work and determination seemed to wear the Durham Building boys down, and Trenton took advantage by scoring 3 in the 2nd and l in the 3rd before Jeff Reynolds got the Toros on the board with the help of Scott Brunt. Trenton's Shawn Patrick took the starch right out of the Toros' floundering sails by completing his hat trick with 2 consecutive unassisted goals .21 seconds apart. Shane Armstrong took advantage of an opening, and left the Trenton goalie looking for a certain piece of equipment as he very adeptly gave the Toros their 2nd and final goal with Britt Cole and Neil Taylor setting him up. A 6-2 score against the current All-Ontario Champions is nothing to be ashamed of - Good effort Toros! Although the Durham Building Toros lost to Trenton, they earned themselves a place in the "B" Championship against Dundas on Sun., Dec. 29th. Again, as in Pickering, they came out as bridesmaids. A good solid effort in the 1st period saw the Durham Boys with a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Troy. Harness. The Toros let up unfortunately in the 2nd and 3rd periods, and allowed Dundas many opportunities, 5 of which they capitalized on. The Toros scored but once more on Troy Harness' 2nd of the game, on a play set up by Scott Brunt and Chris Hall. Tough loss fellows - better luck next time. The Durham Building Supplies Bantams were the only 2 team in the tournament, and of course were underdogs. They deserve a round of applause for the excellent showing and good sportsmanship displayed. Hooray you Toros! Skinner's Pee Wees competed in the Bowmanville Classic hockey tournament over Christmas and won the 'C championship. It is the second year that the Bowmanville lads have been the 'C' champions in the Pee Wee age group. This year the team finished third in their group as a result of two losses and a win in the round robin but beat the third place team in the opposing group to gain the title of champions. Toros 4, Amherstburg 8 Everyone knew Amherstburg was a good team and the Toros would need a tremendous effort to beat them. Well the Toros did work hard and had the lead twice but the opponents had too much depth and as they gradually got over pre-game jitters their strength and skill proved to be too much. Jeff Rohr opened the scoring for the Toros on a power play with a fine solo effort and throughout the first period the teams were evenly matched. In the second period Amherstburg tied the game but soon after Todd Banks put the Toros ahead again on a fine individual effort. Amherstburg then scored three more goals. Dana Barrett scored the Toros third goal assisted by Jeff and Todd on a power play to finish the second period. Amherstburg then scored four more goals in the third period whilst Jeff and Todd combined to score a short- handed goal. The Toros gave up three short-handed goals in the game which is a measure of how good their opponents were. Amherstburg went on to win the .'A' championship by a four goal margin. East York Bulldogs 1 vs Bowmanville 9 The second game of the Christmas Classic Tournament was played in the Darlington Arena. The Toros played a strong game against Hockey Mothers Bring Christmas To Family of Six Bowmanville's hockey mothers have helped make Yuletide a little more enjoyable enjoyable for a family of six who might otherwise have not had a Christmas. Joanne Brown, president of the Bowmanville Minor Hockey Association Hockey Mothers,! explained that the children ranging in age from three to seven. In addition, addition, they supplied the parents parents with a complete Christmas Christmas dinner. In explaining the circumstances circumstances surrounding the Christmas project, Mrs. Brown noted that the hockey hockey mothers were advised of the family in need through the St. Joseph's Church. Jason Czypha the starting goal keeper for the Toros made some great saves to keep Bowmanville in the game and then his replacement Geoff Smith was equally good. The action was end to end after the Toros scored both teams trying very hard. Jeff Acheson who was playing with a bruised leg got better as the game wore on. The Toros pulled their goal keeper in favour of an extra attacker and scored a late goal to make the score 3-2, however on the ensuing pushing and shoving Bowmanville were assessed a penalty which did not help their cause. A tough loss. Championship Game Toros 4, Port Perry 1 The game was a lot closer than the score indicates and the Toros had to play hard all the time. Jeremy Laird opened the scoring on a beautiful solo effort. It was a power play goal. Jeremy who played defence for this game had to beat a few Port Perry players before scoring high into the net, a good goal. Jeff Rohr scored the next three with Todd and Gilbert Holder earning assists. The lone goal for Port Perry came in the third period on a power play. Marc Peirce played a strong game for the Toros, his skating is getting stronger each game and by the time playoffs role around he will be a real asset to the team. Ryan Putnam is also getting stronger, he is good along the boards and although not particularly big he is difficult to knock down. Jeff Flintoff played his usual steady game on defence, he is a tireless worker. Andrew Day played well in this game moving the puck in the centre ice area quite nicely. St. Marys Midgets Win Christmas Classic Title After a two week lay-off the St. Marys Cement sponsored Midgets hit the ice in high gear to open their first game of the Bowmanville Christmas Classic Tournament. With fast skating, puck-control and steady goal-tending they handed the Whitby AA club a 5-0 defeat. Glen Campbell and Kelly Balson each picked up a goal and two assists, Bob McArther a goal and an assist, with other goals going to Dave Tuepah and Paul Stainton. Scott Webster turned aside 25 shots in preserving the shutout. shutout. Saturday night saw the Toros squared off against Saltfleet who early had lost to Port Colborne. The cement plant crew were not as smooth a unit as they had been earlier in the day and only David Smith's solid goal-tending prevented a loss. As a result, Johnny Romano tied the game at 1 at the 8:34 mark of the third period which is how it ended. Mike Gallant made the key pass, for Romano's goal. Game three built up to be a key game, determining who would advance to the "A" championship. The St. Mary's boys' opposition was Port Colborne, a fast skating club with good goal-tending. With a strong team effort and the return of Jamie Lever, the locals skated to a 3-0 decision with Webster posting his second shut-out of the tournament. Shawn Rekker broke the game open at 6:15 of the second with a heads-up play in the slot from Glen Campbell and Dave Tuepah. Four minutes later Jamie Lever burst from the penalty box to convert a goal-mouth pass from Jamie Downing and Mike Gallant for the Toros' second goal. With four minutes gone in the third period, John Romano notched the St. Marys Cement boys third goal from Scott Page and David Fairey. The win set the stage for the "A" championship on Sunday, December 29th against Lindsay. Lindsay upset Port Perry and defeated Oshawa Bruins and Scarborough. Following a .determined victory by Brian Taylor's Major Bantams, "congratulations guys", the St. Mary's boys took the ice for the "A" championship against Lindsay. It only took two minutes for Johnny Romono to pot one and give the Toros the lead on an assist from Scott Page and David Smith. One minute later George Pithie broke his scoring drought from Kelly Balson and Larry Perris. With 19 seconds left in the period, Romano notched his second from Scott Page. This goal seemed to put the cement boys in charge. The second period resulted in goals by Campbell, Stainton, Pithie and Lever. Assists were credited to Fairey, Campbell, Balson and Campbell. David Fairey scored in the third from Paul Stainton. David Smith was tough when he had to be and was a victim of circumstances on the lone tally Linsay counted. Congratulations Toros, keep it up for 3 more months. Pyramid Points The top of the pyramid this week is dedicated to Henrv Downing and Fred Brown who with the support of their families, organized, set-up and masterminded a memorable "Christmas Classic" tournament for all major teams. These gentlemen started last May and with an efficient supporting cast gave all participants something to remember. Hats off to Henry and Fred! Thanks guys. Our player feature this week spotlights John Romano and Glen Campbell. John sports number 8 on his sweater and is an aggressive, hard working winger who has counted several key goals this year. John has been part of the Toro group that has been in the All- Ontario Finals several times in the past few years. Last year, he was a member of the Major Midgets and had a few games with the Eagles. Young Mr. Romano has 10 goals and 14 assists for 24 points. Glen Campbell, No. 9, has been a regular with this age group for several years,, and last year was the scoring leader on the Minor Midgets, " with 84 points in 60 games. Glen is a free wheeling skater who compliments any line with his aggressiveness and excellent puck-control. To date, Mr. Campbell has 33 goals, 35 assists for 68 points in the 41 games he has played. He has a commendable, and 42 in the plus, minus category. Glen is also a key in penaltykilling, penaltykilling, and power-play situations.
