Wesley ville Eagles Clinch First Place " Thn All Stare aHHpH an upset defeating Bowmanvil For the first Sunday in the New Year, attendance at Welcome United Church was much better attended than the last in the old year when a fierce storm made driving precarious. Mrs. King in her New Year's message spoke of the philosopher Johannes Eckhart of the 14th century. His message then and for today was one of spiritual uplift. Throughout our lives we are experiencing God's creation and we miss the glory of it and the marvellous universe if we dwell on material things only. There must be time to see the beauty and know the glory of the garden created for man. The story for the children was a preview of the sermon told through the experiences of a little boy seeking for love and finding it, not in the captivity of a free wild thing but through the caring for a little pup who returned his love. The choir's anthem was the lovely "Lullaby" from the cantata, "Heaven Rejoices." The offering was received by Clarence Nichols and Glen Thompson. Two beautiful arrangements of flowers were in loving memory of Mrs. Isobel Brice whose death occurred last week. Sympathy is extended to her son Cliff Brice and to all other members of the family. On Thursday evening of last week, Mary Symons showed pictures at Welcome Church of her school work in Nain, Labrador where she has been teaching since last September. September. This school is frame built in sections for grades from kindergarten to 12. There are 24 teachers who live in residence. At least five are from Ontario, others from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Mary has all the grades on her timetable. The seniors are not as fluent in English as the younger ones whose parents have been through the school system so speak English and the children are in danger of losing their own language, so it is being taught. One teacher has been there 13 years, he married an Innuit girl and has a family so that is now his home. Others stay on an average of three years. The school is heated by oil, and they generate their own electricity. By next September September they hope to move into a new cement block school heated by electricity. The By Dan Moriarity The Cowan Pontiac sponsored Bowmanville Eagles were kept busy over the holiday season, playing three league games and the Annual Jr. C All-Star game. The Eagles, last year's league champions, faced off against the Central Ontario All Stars on Boxing Day at the Bowmanville Memorial Arena. Roger Hornsby opened the scoring for the Eagles late in the 1st period after the All Stars had jumped to a 2-0 lead. In the second, the Eagles outplayed their opponents and could have taken the lead but for the outstanding play of goaltender Colin Newell. The All Stars added an insurance goal with 6:41 remaining in the game and although Brian Heard scored with 2:14 to go on a shot from behind the net which bounced oil the back of goaltender Scott Birkhoff to make it 3-2 the Eagles could score no further and went down to defeat. The following Sunday saw the Eagles at home to play the Uxbridge Bruins. Mark Hickey and Brian Heard scored three goals apiece while Dayrell Rowe and A1 Vachon had singles as the Eagles doubled the Bruins 84. Next up for the Cowan Eagles was a trip to Lindsay to face the Trent Muskies. The lowly Muskies pulled off an children are musical and Mary teaches music. They have a band, were delighted when they were able to buy drums. They hope to take a group to Gander for a music festival but the cost will be $4,000 so will need help. The I.O.D.E. gave them a gift of $1,000. The children delight to hear Mary's description of life in this area. They have never seen a farm animal. Teaching of religion is mandatory, and is under the jurisdiction of the Moravian Church. Their only transportation is by snowmobile. snowmobile. Mary left on Saturday for her return trip there. The Welcome U.C.W. is holding its joint meeting on Wednesday, January 15th and the roll call is "toques and mitts" for Nain. Sorry to report that Ken Dinner is in Peterborough Hospital where he was taken following suffering pains in his chest. At present he is stabilized and we hope soon will be well again. upset defeating Bowmanville by a score of 10-9. The Cowan Eagles then returned home to face the Port Perry Mojacks on Sunday. After two fairly close periods of hockey, the Eagles pulled away for a 7-2 romp over the Mojacks. Eagle's Dayrell Rowe had three goals and an assist to move ahead of Port Perry's Brian Nicholson in the battle for the league scoring title. Rowe's chances to win the title were dealt a severe blow when he was assessed a questionable 2 game suspension due to an incident late in the 3rd period. As the Eagles have only 4 games remaining in the regular schedule, Rowe now has only two games left while Nicholson has four. Eagle's assistant coach Carl Nielsen was annoyed after the game, "You'd think they'd let Dayrell and Brian decide it (the scoring race), rather than having it decided by a referee's call. He got rooked, Dayrell really got cheated." It is indeed a shame that a season long race has to be decided like this. The Eagles will not play at home this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. as usual, but will be in action the following Sunday, Jan. 19 at7:30p.m. 'j : ft-' X- > ' < 5 iuu ■ Mf.J|i 'u.lvl il. oi ajSl • Ok ; /.if),- »t,ViW ! ûi|li ^ -v .s» »7y<®ea !•-. ) V.t \-i t'.fj i 'X;. . 1.1> y bra tis-X «>.;?>!
