By Sam Laskaris The Bowmanville Cowan Pontiac Eagles dropped the first game of the Central Ontario Junior 'C' Hockey League finals by a Âcôre of 8-6 Sunday night in thëiBowman- ville Arena. The opposition for the Eagles in- the championship championship round is being provided by the Lakefield Chiefs who went the limit of seven games before eliminating the Port Hope Panthers in their semifinal semifinal series. Sunday's game was perhaps the worst game the Eagles have played all year. From the efforts that were put forth by the Eagle players it appeared as though they thought all they had to do was simply lace up their skates, go for a pleasure skate and come away with the victory. The team had better change this attitude rather quickly. It is a fact that the Eagles were the number one team in the league during the regular season, but the playoffs are an entirely different story. The team has to go out and prove that they are deserving to be the league champions. It will definitely do no good for the Eagles to start looking past this series and onto better things which may lie ahead. The Lakefield Chiefs have to be contended with first. Even though the Chiefs finished in sixth place in the league standings, hard work has earned them a berth in the league finals. The Chiefs are a big and aggressive squad which can be beaten only by playing sixty minutes of hard-working and smart hockey. The Eagle players are aware that they are capable of doing this hut they have to actually go out and accomplish it. If the Eagle players arc not able to change their altitudes then they will hastily be eliminated from further playoff action. In Sunday's match, Scott Heard opened the scoring for the Eagles at the 3:04 mark with Brian Heard and Gord Rogers earning the assists. Two powerplay goals, however, however, gave the Chiefs a 2 - 1 lead after the first period. First, it was Chris Palmer who put a shot between Scott Hooper's legs at 13:13, with Paul Lasch and Andy Olgivie picking up the assists. Then it was Lasch scoring at 17:30 from Palmer and Gord Davey. In the second period, the Chiefs went ahead 3 -1 when Terry Downer scored at the 5:35 mark from Shawn Hill and Lasch. Only thirty-four seconds later, the Eagles' Mark Hickey narrowed the gap when he scored from Dayreil Rowe and Rogers. It took almost a full ten minutes for the next goal to be scored. The Eagles' Darcy Huber tied the game at 3 - 3 when he scored on his second effort shot from the slot. The assists on this play went to Andy Terry and Randy Ellis. Only one minute and twelve seconds later the Chiefs went ahead once again on a rather unusual goal. Rob Headon backhanded a shot towards the Eagles' goal which somehow somehow managed to hit Hooper's back and pop into the net. Mike Terpstra and Dave Morgan were credited with assists. The Chiefs wero able to take a two-goal lead into the final period as Charlie Free- burn. scored from Palmer and Davey with only forty-five seconds remaining in the period. In the third period, the Eagles got two quick goals to notch the score at 5 - 5. The Eagles' fourth goal was scored after Tim Preston from behind the net fed Brad Clemens who was standing in front of the Chiefs' net. Clemens wasted no time in sliding the puck along the ice past Terry Eggleton in the Chiefs' net. Hickey picked up ATTENTION Softball Players! Then at 4:27 John Young scored from Scott Heard and Pierre St. Amand. It didn't 1 tjjke the Chiefs long to break the:dfeadlock as only twenty-eight seconds later Davey scored from Palmer and Dave Bodrug on a partial breakaway. Hickey's second goal of the evening provided the game's fourth tie. This goal was scored at 10:37 with Preston and Rogers earning assists. What turned out to be the winning goal came twenty-one seconds later. It was Davey's second goal of the game with The Fifth Wheel Bantam 2's are playing an exhibition round robin series with Mill- brook, Orono and Bewdley. The top two teams will play a further series. This excellent idea provides some additional games for the local team as they have been eliminated from theO.M.H.A. playdowns. In the first game of the series Bowmanville journeyed to Orono on Tuesday night and came away on the short end of a 4 - 3 score. The opening period saw Orono take an early 3 - 1 lead on goals by Stuart Irwin and Brent Hutton (two). The lone Toro marker was scored by Todd Doiron with Tim Smith and Greg Gardner drawing assists. The second period remained scoreless but soon after the start of the third period Ted Gaudetl counted Orono's fourth goal. Not to be outdone, Tim Smith replied 29 seconds later for Bowmanville. With approximately two minutes left, Brad Rusliak scored the final Toro marker. Todd Doiron, who had a good night, drew assists on the final two Bowmanville goals. Scott Hanthorn and Kevin Zarosky shared the goaltending duties. The other two games played thus far in this series involved home and home encounters with Millbrook. The first game was played in Millbrook on Thursday night and saw the Bantam 2's play a solid game to defeat the home team 3 - 0. Brad Rusliak opened the scoring for Bowmanville early in the second period when he lifted nn excellent shot over the Millbrook goalie's shoulder. Tim Smith had passed to Brad thus earning an assist. Tills goal cmne after a scoreless fjrst period when Kevin Zarosky kept the Toros in the game with many excellent excellent saves, lie ultimately earned a well-deserved shut out. Brad's goal prompted the Toros to get Into action. Paul Hindman followed with Hownimiville's next two goals. Paul's uuicknuss and savvy around tlie net pul him in llie right spot at the right lime. Greg (iM'dner who played a good game drew assists on Lasch and Freeburn being awarded assists. With the Eagles' netminder pulled in favour of an extra attacker, the Chiefs got an empty net goal with only four seconds remaining in the contest. Downer was credited with his second goal after receiving a pass from Rob Gilders. Game two in this series was played last night in Lakefield (after our press deadline). The third game will be played here in Bowmanville on Friday with the fourth game to be played in Lakefield on Sunday night. these two goals. David Smith who played a strong two-way game also earned an assist. Millbrook travelled to the Darlington Sports Centre on Sunday to complete the home and home set. The visitors went home victorious 2 - 1. Bowmanville opened the scoring at the 5:20 mark of the first period when Scott Brunt made an excellent pin-pointed pass to Tim Smith who broke away quickly and deked the Millbrook goalkeeper to score a pretty goal and give the home team an early lead. Scott continued to play a strong defensive game. Neither team scored again until Millbrook added two quick powerplay goals with only three minutes left in the game thus ensuing the victory. Stays Alive In Playoffs Town Sports, facing elimination, came up with a big effort to down Three Brothers Pizza by five goals to one. Gary Dusseldorp, Tim Almond, Sandy Brown, Jim Baker and Bill Prentice scored for Town Sports, assists going to Prentice, Dusseldorp (two each), Brown, Bob Jones and Dale Millson. Tom Conahan scored the lone Pizza marker, assisted by Doug Leddy. Mike Willoughby was spectacular in the Town Sports net, robbing' Jerry Leddy, John Conboy and other Pizza snipers. The Kool team came out flying with Jason Ryan, after receiving receiving a fine pass from Andy Big Canoe in front of the Capri net, sending home the first goal after a minute and thirty seconds into the game. The game continued at a furious pace with Capri managing to bring the game even at the half way point of the period. Then just four short minutes later Kool's Paul Smethurst, again on a perfect pass from Andy Big Canoe, pushed home the team's second goal and eventual winner. Second assist went to Jason Ryan. The second period continued in the same vain as the first, with . only Brent MacKay managing to score Kool's third goal.on a solo effort at: the five minute mark. The third period belonged solely to the Kool team as their defence continued to hamper any real thrust Capri tried to mount and the offence passed every advantage they were given. It was inevitable that Kool would score and Sean Powers, with the help of some very hard work by Todd DeGooyer and Shaun Carlton, banged home their fourth goal with just three minutes remaining remaining in the game. The Kool team did not ease off and with just 25 seconds remaining Andy Big Canoe, capping a fine game, scored Kool's final goal on a scramble in front of Capri's net. Brent MacKay and Peter Moorecraft assisted. assisted. The final score was 5 - 1 Kool over Capri. Saturday, March 2 saw the playoff round begin with Kool losing to Nichols in what could be called one of Kool's poorer efforts. » At the start it looked as, if it was going to be a goal scorer's delight with Kool scoring first, right off the opening faceoff. Sean Powers took Brent MacKay's winning draw and beat Nichol's goalie after only 12 seconds. Then Nichols turned around and 30 seconds later tied the game. This was the extent of the first period's scoring, but Nichols continually continually carried the play and only Kool's defence kept the score even. It was the end of the first shift in the second period when Nichols again scored to take the lead they would never relinquish. This was the only scoring of the second but Nichols again had the edge in play. The third period saw Kool and Nichols exchange goals with Nichols getting the first to give them a two goal advantage. advantage. It was with only ten minutes left in the game when Kool finally seemed to come to life and start to play hockey. Then, with over seven minutes left in the game, Kelly Floyd deflected in a shot from Sean Powers to bring Kool within one goal. It looked as if they might come back after all, but, despite out-playing Nichols in the final minutes, they could not find the mark and fell one goal short. This is a best two out of three series and Kool has one more chance to prove they are the better team. PEACOCK LUMBER LTD. Building supplies. Our specialty is lumber and lumber products.
