The Morgantaler scandal is just a symptom of a far more serious disease which has gripped our North American continent in the past decade. The disease is called "Humanism", which simply means, "placing man at the centre of all things and making him the measure of all things." The wider more prevalent prevalent meaning is "man beginning from himself, with no knowledge except what he himself can discover and no standards outside of himself." When this philosophy of life • is followed it leads to all sorts of dangerous and frightening trends in a previously Judeo- Christian and responsible culture. Abortion, pornography, pornography, homosexuality, infanticide, incest, euthanasia and a thousand other social issues have taken on threatening threatening consequences in the light of America's new religion (Humanism). Take "abortion." The Humanist equates the fact that the human fetus is alive only in the same sense that mosquitoes and bacteria are alive: - that even after a baby is born, it is not human until its social relations develop, and that even doing away with an infant in this stage of life "really isn't murder." So it is that religious denominations which are controlled by liberal theology have come out, publicly and strongly, in favour of abortion. Abortion is not a political problem, yet, presently the courts are being used in an attempt to establish that the abortion law in Canada violates the Charter of Rights. Abortion is not a medical problem, yet, doctors have been asked to become social executioners in trying to bring about a better society. Abortion is a social problem - the result of a society's wandering in the wilderness of humanism which has greatly cheapened the value and sanctity of life. We were told in days before the supreme court abortion decisions in the United States that abortion on demand would reduce child abuse. Instead, it has climbed by 500 percent since 1973, even though 12,000,000 babies were aborted. We were told that we would have better sexual morality, but instead we have, great numbers of teenage pregnancies resulting from sex education programs which deny a moral code and encourage encourage a hedonistic lifestyle. Abortion is now understood to be a back-up to contraceptive failure in the "do your own thing" lifestyle. Usually, reasons given for an abortion include preserving preserving the life of the mother, the expectation of a defective child, etc. Even if these were valid reasons they would account for only three percent of all abortions. This leaves a mere 97 percent which occur for matters of convenience and economy. When parents are counselled counselled to allow a child to starve to death because he may have some congenital defect we have cause to examine the motives behind such decisions. decisions. Leo Alexander, American psychiatric representative representative to the Nuremberg trials, in trying to bring the origins of the holocaust to the lowest common denominator, said that it all began with the concept that human life was not worth living. But if we project this society's actions into the future the results are disastrous. disastrous. Every child that is allowed to survive now will, in the first years of the next century, need to bear a greater burden in supporting an older aged population. The social security system (the pension), could be stretched to the breaking point. Now, those deciding on abortion today may be the victims of euthanasia (letting the elderly die), tomorrow; caught in a trap of their own making. The family structure in North America is rapidly deteriorating. Abortion infanticide, infanticide, artificial insemination, single parenthood, euthanasia, euthanasia, gay rights, and radical women's liberation are all damaging the family unit. Where will it all end? I fear that unless we arise and shake ourselves as a society, we are doomed to go the way of other civilizations who lost their respect for the sanctity of life, and the fact that man is a creation of God. Next week I hope to continue "The Abortion Issue" under the following considerations: legal, moral and ethical, medical, and Biblical viewpoints. viewpoints.
