Buckham Transport Ties The march towards the Ontario finals continued this - weekend as Buckham Toros split two playoff games with Midland tying the series 2-2 and setting up the final battle next Saturday at 7:00 in Darlington. Darlington On Saturday, February 16, despite home-ice advantage, Toros came out flat from the opening whistle and remained off-key for two periods. The Transporters were quickly hemmed in and Midland took advantage of their inability to clear the puck, scoring twice in the first while Toros managed only two shots on net. Things looked bleak until 9:43 of the second when, after some good hustle by Tim Powers, the puck was relayed to Jim Pithie at the point who blasted it through the pads of the goalie (assist also to Greg Goode). Unfortunately, the drive did not continue as Midland scored again in the second and once more in the third before Toros turned on the heat. And was it hot! The last five minutes of the third period were spent in Midland's Midland's end with a blitzkrieg assault (hat saw pucks flying everywhere. Stephen Smith scored at 4:51 on the powerplay powerplay from a patented Healey- pass (assist also to Troy Mutton). Then at 1:13 Tony Van Hoof (Nicky Dennis, Doug Lever) brought the score within range; the goalie was pulled and the energy was there but the time wasn't. The game ended 4 - 3 for Midland with the home ice advantage switching to Midland, Sunday. Midland Toros play well under pressure pressure and they proved it Sunday, February 17th, in Midland as both teams gave fans their money's worth in another end-to-end "who's going to win?" match that left the answer to the last second, Midland drew first blood late in the first, quickly answered by Dean Baum- hauer (Greg Goode). No scoring scoring occurred in the second as both goalies shut the offense down. Mike Ruthard was just sensational in net as he kept the team in contention. Finally at 7:31 of the third, Nicky Dennis (Tony Van Hoof, Doug Lever) put the team ahead setting up a massive encounter in the last minute when Midland pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. With 10 seconds left Shane Armstrong intercepted the puck and put the game away 3 -1 tying the series. On Sunday, February 10 the house of cards really tipped as Lindsay outshot, outhit, outplayed outplayed and outscored the Bell Boys 9 - 2. The first period saw Lindsay buzz the Bowmanville boys and thanks to a very steady Burke Lush, only came away with two goals. Early in the second period, it looked as if we might have a game on our hands as the Bell boys struck twice to knot the score but alas the resurgence was short lived and Lindsay swamped the boys from Bowmanville. Scoring for Bowmanville was Rob Real from Troy Harness, Troy Harness from Mark Tripp. The final nail was driven into the Bell coffin Tuesday as the boys faced not only snowy roads but the squad from Cobourg only to sneak home with a 7 -1 drubbing. By the time Mark Tripp scored from Craig de Blois, the Bowmanville Bowmanville boys were down four goals and Cobourg found the Bell goal incentive enough to add three more goals to the total, skating off with a 7 - 1 win. Skating through the motions is what appeared Saturday, February 16 as the boys played Lindsay. As had happened Tuesday the Bell scoring was too little too late. The only scoring for Bowmanville Bowmanville was Gareth Stone, unassisted, unassisted, and Mark Tripp from Troy Harness. Kool Enterprises Ties with Nichols On Saturday, February 16 Kool Enterprise Bantams took to the ice against third place Nichols in a game that would produce little in the way of useful points. The first period started slowly for the Kool team as Nichols continually carried the play into the Kool end and only their solid defence kept the score even. Finally after five minutes into the first period Nichols scored to put Kool into a hole. Kool continued to show a lackluster effort until the final three minutes when Scan Powers pushed home a single-handed Heritage House Pee Wees Tie Oshawa Red Wings On Saturday, February 16, the Heritage House Pee Wee Toros hosted the Oshawa Little N.H.L. Red Wings in an exhibition match at tiie Darlington Darlington Sports Center, There was plenty of motivation for the Local Lads since this was the same Red Wing team that had handed them a 12 - 4 thrashing at the Civic Auditorium Auditorium last October, Front the opening face-off it was clear that this would be a different game from the first one as the Toros displayed the kind of Intensity and team play needed to be successful, Bowmanville opened the scoring scoring as Shawn McFudyen converted on a nice face-off draw from Greg White and carried a l - 0 lead into the second period. Oshawa managed to score one goal in the second to tie the score. Each team scored three times in the third period with the visitors holding 3 ■ 1 and 4 ■ 2 leads but the Toros' perseverance perseverance was finally rewarded as they notched two markers 111 the last three minutes to earn a well deserved draw. Scorers in the third for Bowmanville were Greg White, Brooke Clemens and Shawn McFadyen (his second). A single assist was awarded to Todd Banks, Three Stars were Shawn McFadyen, Greg White and, Marlin D'Entromont, Jason Hiscock played another strong game between the pipes as he faced 26 Oshawa shots, many of the "labelled" variety. Next game - Saturday, February 23, 4:00 p.m. at Darlington against the Whitby Warriors, effort to end the period in a tie. The second period showed no appreciable improvement in Kools' effort despite the fact that the score was still tied at one apiece with five minutes left in the period. Then Kool showed some life as Kools' Peter Moorcraft scored on a pass from Jason Vacheresse, Brent MacKay got the second assist. Just thirty seconds later Nichols scored on a scramble in front of the net, leaving the second period in a tie, Nichols then scored quickly in the third period to again force Kool to play 'catch-up' hockey. Kool, rising to the occasion, started to turn the game around and pressed Nichols at every chance, effectively stopping any real scoring thrust. Willi just over seven minutes left in the game Todd DcGooyer took the puck and single-handedly carried it through the entire Nichols' team to beat their goalie with a hard shot to the near corner. This again left the score tied, and it seemed It would remain so until Nichols ran up several minor penalties, This left Kool witli numerous opportunities which unfortunately they could not press to their udvaii- tage. The final score was 3 ■ 3. KeepCanada 1 Beautiful OPEN 24 HOURS #$Sl3i Ù JL ^ C*YM.
