* 2 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, February 20,1985 3 SMALL TALK By Donna Fairey Mother Nature is Costly It was during the wee hours of the morning last Tuesday that the thought of a delicious, scrumptuous, hard boiled egg made my mouth water. Normally, I don't become that stirred stirred up over an egg. But you see, it was the second LONG day of a radical, seven-day fruit diet. In fact, this attempt attempt to reduce is the first ever diet of my life. I was the kind of kid who grew up with the nickname "skinny." Moreover, it was only a year or so ago that a friend suggested I should perhaps seek treatment for my emaciated condition. Maybe you're anorexic? In a soft sympathetic sympathetic voice, the same friend suggested that perhaps I suffered from one of the biggie diseases. But wonder of wonders, wonders, all that began to change. A little more meat here; a little more weight there; a new dimple here; a new curve there. The body shape, in effect, became became convex instead of concave. It was last weekend that the big spread came to a screeching halt. My visiting daughter daughter cleaned from my closet the clothes that wouldn't fit the person the family now calls "chub." Indeed, there wasn't much of my wardrobe left. No self respecting woman can make it through this life with two or three blouses, one pair of slacks and one skirt. So Monday I began what is called, for lack of a better name, the banana diet. It also includes includes apples and oranges but very little more. The dieter is given precious few treats - less than a pound of lean meat, two 10 oz. salads, 1 oz. of cheese and a few hard boiled eggs. Otherwise it's bananas in the mor- nin', bananas in the evenin', bananas at suppertime. Perhaps you can now understand why the A Willowdale company has begun the first phase of a 77-lot subdivision to be built at the corner of Martin Rd. and Baseline Rd. in southwest Bowmanville. Stolp Homes plans to begin construction in June of this year, with the first homes ready for occupancy in September of 1985. "We felt we could offer a larger home with the upgraded upgraded features," said Stolp Homes marketing manager Pat Whelan. He added that with a minimal minimal amount of new home construction in Bowman- ville during the past seven to eight years, his company feels market conditions are good. Stolp Homes is a four- year-old company which earned the Builder of the Year Award in Toronto during during 1983. It constructs approximately approximately 400 homes per year in communities surrounding surrounding Toronto. W„ lowmanilllo % of Van lion# Geideftt lid thought of a solid egg Tuesday after a diet of six bannanas the day before represented a gourmet feast. I laid in bed waiting for a respectable respectable hour to charge the refrigerator. When first light broke, I could hold back no longer. Congratula tions to the chicken. It was the best egg I've ever tasted. In spite of the miseries miseries associated with this banana regimen, it works. The diet is used by the French women's ski team prior to a competition. competition. With it, goes a recorded weight loss of from 10 to 15 pounds in a single week. The instructions which accompany the diet, however, fail to mention the side effects. effects. My new walk is slightly hunched over and I have an overwhelming overwhelming urge to swing from a tree or search for cooties in people's hair. Depressing isn't it, how life takes us physically physically downhill. First it was bi-focals and now a tendency to gain weight. Makes me frightened to ponder what could be next to go. by Diane Pickett Taxpayers in southern Ontario are paying dearly for Mother Nature's Nature's excesses this winter. However, However, residents in Newcastle are better off than those in urban municipalities. municipalities. Director of Public Works Ron Dupuis said his department "is spending more than average" on snow clearing and removal. "We have spent about $200,000 so far this year...about $60,000 more than usual at this time," Mr. Dupuis said. However, he is not yet overly concerned concerned that his department will exceed exceed its half million dollar budget for snow removal this season. In spite of the large volume ofthe white stuff dumped on us so far this winter, the Works Department spending position may still end up better than last year. The department department budgets for snow removal through the end of April -- everybody everybody hopes the need will have diminished diminished by then! Mr. Dupuis went on to say that rural municipalities are better off than metropolitan areas because the most expensive road maintenance maintenance operation is the removal and transportation of snow. In Newcastle it is only necessary to remove accumulated snow from major traffic areas and there are open areas near-by to put it. "Market share, however, continues to show improvement in many areas of our business and we anticipate further advances in market share in the upcoming years. "We celebrate 75 years in Canada in 1985, and our theme for the year is Serving the public in motion.. . past... present... and future," Buzby concluded. "By paying attention to this theme, and by recognizing that the customer is the "boss", we can focus our attention on providing the best in product and service to those who choose the many items we manufacture."
