A'^MTODflY'S A^iCHflLLENGE Because of a snow storm on Tuesday our Ebenezer U.C.W. meeting was held on Wednesday, February 13th at 9:30 a.m. in the C.E. Hall for a special Valentine treat. Yasuko Nagase, a 19 year old Rotary exchange student from the city of Kanagawa near Tokyo, Japan was our guest speaker. We were greeted at the door with Konichiwa meaning hello by Yasuko and one of her host families, Mrs. Kay Moore, We were invited to sit at card tables that were brightly decorated with a Valentine theme. We knew we were in for trouble when we saw chop sticks by our plates. President Mrs. Charlotte Hughes opened the meeting with a reading about building our home on love. Secretary Mrs. Kay Mackie read the past minutes and a note from Simcoe Hall Settlement House thanking us for our help in contributing to the Christmas hamper program. They packed 500 hampers plus toys for needy families at Christmas. Mrs. Joan Down gave the treasurer's report followed by Mrs. Jean McKnight taking up the offering. President Charlotte reminded us about the following upcoming events. Twenty third annual meeting of the Oshawa Presbyterial United Church Women at Kingsview United Church, Oshawa on Tuesday, March 19 at 9:15 a.m. Speaker Mrs. Lois McLeod, Youth Work Developer, this being the "International Youth Year". The World Day of Prayer to be held at Courtice United Church on Friday, March 11 at 2:00p.m. Our next U.C.W. meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. with Mrs. Shirley Coyle speaking on blood. Men are invited. Mrs. Kay Moore led in a very appropriate devotional with love as her theme. We sang "Jesus Loves The Little Children" accompanied by Mrs. Eileen Down on piano. Kay told of her Sunday School class making the valentines that decorated our tables and how Valentine's Day is giving, more than receiving. The scripture readings Kay read were from 1 Cor. 13:13 and Matt: 22: 36-40. Kay gave a short message on love, telling how love and understanding go hand in hand. If we don't take the time to understand other people, their feelings, problems and even their joyful : times then how can we share a real love for them. Having a stranger live in her home such as Yasuko, is a good practical way to show our love. Giving the time to participate in this program has made them more aware and has helped them discover new ideas and truths, but most of all a real love has developed between them, that they could not have felt without giving of themselves. Kay then led us in a very meaningful prayer, she read from 1st John 7 & 8 and we sang the song of which the scripture speaks "Beloved Let Us Love One Another" Yasuko is really no stranger to our community as she has lived in two of our members' homes, the George Moore and Jack Locke families. Yasuko showed us slides depicting the beauty of her country, Japan. She told about her family and schooling and that she had finished high school before coming to Canada and upon her return will go to college. She told of there being 7Vh million people in the province where she lives. Because it is not a Christian country people work seven days a week. She said that contrary to what we think they only wear their kimonos on special occasions. Yasuko taught us and had us all make a Japanese craft. 'A ,t CAM GOTO N ... For Only We soon found out why we had chopsticks by our plates as Kay and Yasuko gave us a quick lesson on how to tackle eating rice with them followed by cookies, tea and coffee. It really was a lot of fun and was enjoyed by all. Mrs. Eileen Down thanked Yasuko for sharing with us her culture and beauty of Japan. On Sunday, February 10 at Maple Grove Church a service of introduction was held for Mrs. David Harris as our lay minister for the charge. Our prayers go with you Ruth. Congratulations to Russ and Marjlyn (Wood) Milburn on their marriage on February 14th at Ebenezer United Church.
