FLASHBACK -- 10 YEARS AGO -- In the Bowmanville Bowmanville Minor Midget hockey league, Bowmanville Bowmanville defeated Cobourg 6-4 with goals by Rick Cross, Ed Gruyters, singles, Jerry Leddy (2) and Jerry Johnston (2). RECOVERING -- Silvia Ruegger of Newcastle, is in satisfactory condition following a two car accident in Guelph recently. Thrown from her car in the collision, Silvia suffered back injuries and lacerations. Her many fans and friends wish her a speedy recovery. BONSPIEL -- The official opening of the Southern Southern Ontario Ladies Championship Bonspiel was held at Dalewood Golf and Country Club at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 29th. On Saturday, January 26th, the Ontario Hydro Atoms defeated London Life Atoms 3 -2. The game was fast paced and action-filled with both teams rushing from end to end. Every player hustled and gave 100 percent effort. Special mention to Greg Cook who had four breakaways and scored on three of them. Greg has scored all of our goals in the last two games. Jason Moore played his first game since breaking his arm and picked up two assists. Other assists went to Blair Ells one, and Troy Beth one. ' The Bowmanville Eagles handed the visiting Uxbridge Bruins a 10-4 thrashing on Sunday night, in the second game of the first round of playoffs. Last week, the Eagles won the first game 7-1. By Sam Laskaris The Bowmanville Cowap Pontiac Eagles have grabbed a two-game lead in their best- of-seven Central Ontario Junior 'C' Hockey League quarter-final playoff series against the Uxbridge Bruins. The Eagles recorded two lopsided lopsided victories this past week to gain control of the series. On Friday night in Uxbridge, the Eagles trounced the Bruins 7 - 1 and then on Sundaÿ at home humiliated the Uxbridge squad by a count of 10-4. In Uxbridge on Friday night, the Eagles opened the scoring at the 17:49 mark of the first period. Brian Heard started the scoring play by passing off to Scott Heard who broke away on a two on one break with Chris Dreossi. Dreossi finished the play by depositing the puck behind Brian Tarleton in the Bruins' net. After only one minute and eighteen seconds had elapsed in the second period, the Eagles went ahead 2 - 0 as Brian Heard scored from Scott Heard and Dayrell Rowe. Just over three minutes later, as the Eagles were killing a penalty, Brian Heard was hauled down by a Bruins' player on a breakaway attempt. Heard was awarded a penalty shot which he calmly calmly placed through Tarleton's legs to put the Eagles up by three goals. The Bruins got on the score- board with what turned out to be their only goal of this encounter at 13:17 as Paul MacEwen scored from Brad Evans. Bowmanville, however, however, was able to take a three- goal lead into the final twenty minutes of play with a power- play goal scored at lb:26. Bowmanville's latest addition, Darcy Huber, let go a hard drive which rebounded off the back boards and directly onto the waiting stick of Rowe who quickly flipped the puck into the net. In the third period, the Eagles notched another powerplay goal as John Young backhanded a shot past the Bruins' netminder. This goal, scored at the 2:38 mark, was assisted by Scott Heard and Gord Rogers. Bowmanville increased its lead to 6 - 1 as Dreossi and Rogers set up Randy Ellis who let go a quick wrist inside the faceoff circle to beat Tarleton at the 9:06 mark, Only twenty-five seconds later, the game's final goal was scored as Dreossi earned his second of the evening by backhanding a shot into the net. The assists on this play were credited to Ellis and Pierre St. Amand. For the second time in as many games, Eagle netminder netminder Scott Hooper allowed only one goal. Hooper made a total of twenty-nine saves to lead his team to a well-deserved victory. The Eagles' forward Rowe was tabbed as the team's player of the game for this contest. ),,. , In '< Sunday's' match the Eagles camé out flying in the first period and connected for six goals. Scott Heard opened the scoring, with assists credited to Brian Heard and John Young at the 2:48 mark. Then at the 5:43 mark, Tim Preston drifted a shot towards the Bruins' net which somehow somehow managed to elude net- minder Terry Willshire. This goal which caused Bruins' coach, Wayne Redshaw to make a goaltending change was assisted by St. Amand and Huber. . Just over tw,o minutes later, Brian Heard made the score 3' - 0 as he scored from Scott Heard and Young. At the 10:01 Durham Builders Play in Man vers On Saturday, January 19th, Durham Building Supplies Atom B's travelled to Manvers for a one day tournament, and came away with some valuable lessons. Bowmanville 3 Newcastle 3 The first game was played against a fine Newcastle squad and was won by Bowmanville on the basis of the first goal scored. Alder put Ids team hack in the game ill the start of the third, but his goal was soon followed by Barrett's R. Hall's marker on a powerplay effort. J. Stainton's second of the game rounded out Barrett's scoring and with only 12 seconds remaining in the game, R. Hooper finished off the scoring for San Marino's. The final score at the buzzer was 4 to 2 for Barrett's, with shots on goal 22 to 21 in favour of Barrett's. Early Sunday morning saw Clinic Pharmacy and Toby's Pub square off in a fast, first- rate contest. The score, 3 to 0 for Clinic, does not reflect the way the game was played; it was a quick, end to end game with Clinic's M. Willoughby, helped by a hot glove-hand, recording the shut out. Both goaltenders provided the fans with some excellent saves keeping the scores from being increased. Once again Bowmanville struck with David Szalo scoring with Matt Dykstra assisting. Bowmanville seemed lo let up, thinking they would sit on the lead which almost proved fatal. Newcastle came back with two more counters and evened the score at three all, and kept up the pressure, but could not break the tie. Congratulations to Jarrett Aus who put in a fine performance between the pipes for Bowmanville. Orono 0 Bowmanville 2 In the second game of this tournament, Bowmanville faced a fine skating Orono club, and ended up on the short end of a 6-2 score. Orono struck early in this contest and never looked back, scoring at the 9:48 mark of the first period. Bowmanville tied the score on a fine effort by Matt Dykstra with Danny Couillard and David Szalo assisting. Orono took over from this point on, scoring the next five goals. Bowmanvillc's final goal was scored by Matt Dykstra, his second of the game with Kevin Colbournc and Jimmy Mills assisting, At this time the coaches would like to thank all the parents for their assistance during the tournament. The Bruins failed to clear the puck out of their own zone and Dreossi capitalized on this opportunity by blasting a shot behind the Bruins"goalie from the top of the faceoff circle. Ellis and Hickey picked up assists on the play. In the second period, the Bruins got on the scoreboard with a powerplay goal scored by MacEwen from Dan Martin at 10:16. Sixteen seconds later the Eagles' Young scored from Brian Heard and Rogers. Then at the 11:58 mark Dreossi scored his second of the evening from Ellis and Huber. The Bruins managed to score another goal in this period as with only one second remaining on the game clock Chris Brown won a faceoff and directed a shot which escaped the grasp of netminder Hooper. In the concluding period the Eagles went ahead 9 - 2 at the 3:08 mark as Young scored from Brad Clemens and Scott Heard. The Eagles' final goal was scored less than a minute later by Clemens with Young and Roger Hornsby earning the assists. The Bruins then scored on a powerplay at 10:05 with Mike Anderson tallying from Brown and captain Cliff Freckleton. JThe game's_ final goal was Anderson's second of the game from Evans and Martin. Game three in this series was played last night in Bowmanville. If the Eagles were victorious in this match then the team will have an ; opportunity to eliminate the Uxbridge squad on Friday night in Uxbridge. The third annual tournament tournament which drew a large crowd consisted of the best teams from Bowmanville, Oshawa and Newcastle. Finalists in the Novice A division were Victoria and Grey Trust's North Oshawa team and Bowmanville. North Oshawa defeated Bowmanville 3-0, placing Bowmanville 2nd in the division. division. Bowmanville goalie Steve Oake was voted the most valuable player of the Novice A series. In the Novice B division, Jimmy's Place from the Bowmanville House League defeated Lake Vista 1-0, making for an exciting game.
