Minor Midgets Lose in East Gwillimbury Tourney The East Gwillimbury Tournament was played on the weekend of Nov. 23 in Sharon. Bowmanville lost the first game by a score of 4 - 3 to Kitchener. Scoring for the Canadian Tire Midgets were Campbell from Pithie, Paul Martin (unassisted) and Campbell from Martin and Stainton. This loss put us in the Consolation round of the tournament. On Sunday, Nov. 3 we travelled travelled to Sharon to meet Flamboro for the first game of the consolation. It was a must win for both teams as only the winner of this game would advance to the finals. The game was off at a fast pace with the teams skating and checking well. Bowmanville, however, were the losers of the game in overtime by a score of 4 - 3. Those scoring for Bowmanville Bowmanville were Shmyr from Colwell and Edmondson, Pithie from Edmondson and Stainton from Campbell. Bowmanville 5 Pickerings On Tuesday, Nov. 6th we travelled to Pickering for a league game which Pickering won by a score of 6 - 5. Pickering scored the first goal of the game,at 10:40 of the first period and never lost their lead throughout the game. It appeared that Bowmanville might have emerged from the game with a tie as George Pithie scored two fast short handed goals with less than three minutes to play. However, However, we could not put the tying goal in the net. Scoring goals and assists for the Canadian Tire Minor Midgets were George Pithie (three goals, one assist), Houston (one goal), Schmyr (one goal), Martin (assist), McArthur (assist), and Campbell (three assists). Lose League Game to Thornhill 5-2 On home ice, Wednesday, Nov. 7, we lost a league game to Thornhill 5 - 2. This game got off to a fast start with Thornhill skating and checking checking well and scoring three goals before we managed to get on the scoreboard. Our first goal was scored at 10:57 of the second period by Glen Campbell, assisted by George Pithie. Pithie scored the second goal also in the second period. At the end of the second period, the Canadian Canadian Tire Midgets went to the dressing room down only by one goal. Thornhill came back in the third period to score two more goals. Bowmanville is still short one player and hopefully when he returns and we can get definite lines going we will be able to turn these close games into ties or wins. Our next league game is Wednesday, Nov. 14th in Port Perry at 9:30. These members of the Minor Bantam Toros are just a few of the 200 participants who took part in a Skate-A-Thon at the Darlington Arena on Saturday afternoon. Sponsored by the Bowman ville Minor Hockey Association, the event was held to raise funds towards attending future tournaments. tournaments. Buckham Bantams Tie Pickering on Hallowe'en Buckham Transport Toros played catch-up hockey this week in three games that began with the minor bantams deep in the cellar fighting to get out. The team demonstrated demonstrated that they can be a powerhouse powerhouse when the going gets tough and the pressure is on with third period surges that consistently set the competition competition on their heels. Toros celebrated Hallowe'en Hallowe'en at Don Beer Arena in a tough match that saw their defence fade under the strong fore-checking of a determined Pickering club. With 3:39 left in the first period, Toros were already facing defeat, down four goals, disorganized by the pressing Pickering offense. Finally at the 12:12 mark Shane Armstrong, assisted by Neil Taylor, literally crammed crammed the puck past the Pickering Pickering goalie in a picture play that reflected pure hustle. Toros continued to press in the second when Tim Powers drove one at the net from the face-off and Jim Pithie redirected redirected the rebound past the surprised goalie, (assist also to Doug Lever) With momentum now on the side of the Toros, play remained remained consistently in the Pickering end for the rest of the game with subsequent goals from Nick Dennis (John Duczmalewski, Stephen Smith) and Troy Mutton (Stephen Smith and Dean Baumhauer) ending the match in a 4 - 4 tie. Interestingly, Interestingly, only two penalties were called in the game both received received by Bowmanville. On November 3, Whitby visited the Toros in what turned turned out to be a tough-hitting penalty-ridden game that had the Toros down 3 - 2 by the end of the second period. The third period turned into a battleground with the pressing pressing Toros slamming in three unanswered goals to take the match 5 - 3. Penalties (Whitby 11, Bowmanville 9), injuries (Troy Mutton) and game misconducts misconducts unfortunately coloured the victory. Scoring: Shane Armstrong (Van Hoof, Pithie); Doug Lever (Pithie), Shane Armstrong (Taylor, Dennis), Nicky Dennis (Van Hoof, Baumhauer), Neil Taylor (Baumhauer, Van Hoof). On Sunday, November 4, a greatly depleted Toros club headed to Children's Arena to meet the waiting Little NHL Blackhawks who took advantage advantage of the weakened roster (missing Stephen Smith, Greg Healey, Greg Goode and Troy Mutton) and the smaller ice surface. The slower-moving club soon hemmed the Toros into their end pumping five first-period goals past the goalie before the disorganized team could regroup and redirect redirect the flow of the game. With nine seconds left in the first period, Tony Van Hoof was injured in a collision with a larger Blackhawk forward, resulting in a penalty for tripping tripping to the Blackhawk and Tony's removal by stretcher. The further weakened Toros now dug in their heels, tightened tightened their defense and popped in two second period goals: Nicky Dennis (unassisted), Dean Baumhauer (Neil Taylor) in a blazing drive from the point. The game ended 5 - 2 with ice-time being called, preventing preventing the Toros a chance to catch up. The jury will remain out until they meet again November 13th at Darlington. (Miniers Defeat Rice Lake Oilers By Bob Sheridan Friday night, King Garden defeated Rice Lake Oilers in a clean, fast hockey game by the score of 10 - 6. Art Hester played a solid game in the Bowmanville net and also gained an assist on a perfect pass to David Green up the centre. David then hit Grant Flintoff who flew in on the left wing, driving a shot through Rick Hall, the Oilers' goalie. Dave Green had three goals and Bob Sheridan, playing playing right wing on this line, scored .twice. Grant Flintoff, who had a fine game, drew three assists on these goals. We played with two lines in this game and this resulted, as it often does, in better play with the boys getting a lot of ice time. Bob Marjerrison and George Sainsbury set up Irv Gill for three goals. Bob scored a very pretty unassisted unassisted goal from a face-off at centre ice. He tipped the puck ahead, circumvented both defencemen, drew the goal- tender to his knees with a wide shift and fired a back-hand high into the twine from an impossible angle 10 feet out. Our defence corps of Warren Townsley, Roger Shingler, Ray Crombie, Bob Skene and that grand old man Dan Girardi, played a solid game. The team skated well and headmanned (is there such a word?) the puck well. Headmanning Headmanning the puck means to get the puck to the player ahead of the puck carrier and is something the coaches want the players to do. They could be onto something because the team has won three consecutive consecutive games. Gilbert Holder deserves special mention for the way he back checked, a fact the coaches and defence appreciate. Scoring summary - Toros 1 - Jeff Rohr from Michael Col- bourne; Toros 2 - Matthew Doughty from Marc Peirce; Uxbridge one; Toros 3 - Matthew from Gilbert and Jeff Rohr; Uxbridge two; Toros 4 - Marc from Jeff Flintoff; Uxbridge three; Toros 5 - Marc from Jeremy Laird; Toros 6 - Marc from Matthew and Jeff Rohr. Port Hope 3 Toros 5 After losing to the Bowmanville Bowmanville team last week, Port Hope came out flying and soon scored a goal against an apparently tired Toro team. However, a power play goal by Jeff Rohr with assists to Ryan Putnam and Chris Brown got the team going. The second period was initially all Port Hope, scoring two goals on two chances, but Jeff Rohr who had a good night led the team with a super solo effort and scored an unassisted goal. . Another power play goal this time by Gilbert Holder who snapped Marc's rebound into the net tied the score to finish the second period. The final goals were by Chris Brown who quickly put a pass from Jeff Rohr into the net and then an unassisted goal by Jeff Rohr. Geoff Smith turned in another good performance performance especially late in the game when Port Hope kept the Toros in their own end. Toros 2 Port Perry 3 The best game of this season for the Major Pee Wees. Each boy gave 100 percent and the players could be justifiably proud of their effort. The first period was scoreless but there . were many good opportunities and both goalkeepers kept their teams in the game. Philip Green played a strong first period and it was not surprising that he was on the ice for the first goal scored in the second period. The goal was scored by Jeff Acheson with assists to Andrew Day who shot from the point and Philip who passed the puck to Andrew. A short while after this, Geoff Smith made a good save to preserve the lead. Port Perry pressed very hard and equalised at the end of the period. They went ahead early in the third period when the Toros' defence kept backing in and allowed them a good shot. Marc Peirce equalized assisted assisted by Jeff Rohr and Chris ' Brown. After this the Toros ; had many chances. For example Matt Doughty set up Ryan Putnam who hit the post with his shot. But they could not score. Late in the third period Port Perry went ahead but not before Geoff Smith had stopped them on a number of good scoring chances. W. Frank Major Midgets Down Uxbridge Team 5-4 The Toros Midgets played a league game on Nov. 6th . against Uxbridge who showed our guys determined opposition. opposition. The first period went scoreless. In the second, our defensemen Lauer and Tupah netted the first two goals. Noble and Beck added the next two. The winner for a 5 - 4 score was a nice goal by Chris Urie. Assists were earned by Romano (two), Gallant (two), Armstrong, VanLewen, Noble and Thompson. On Nov. 7th, the Toros lost their first league game- against Oshawa No. two by a 5 - 1 score. Goalie Bob Hickey stopped a lot of rubber but otherwise our boys were out- skated, outhustled and out- manoeuvered in all departments departments including game officiating. officiating. The only goal for the Toros was a rebound put in by Mike Gallant. Greg Martin earned the assist. After the loss to Oshawa, the Toros made up by soundly beating Cobourg 9 - 2 for a league win on Nov. 11th. The first period started off with a combined effort on everyone's part that paid off with a three goal lead. Mike Gallant scored the first goal, Jeff Thompson added the next two. Romano and VanLewen each earned an assist while Scott Page and Kelley Balsom set up Jeff on both goals. In the second period, six players cashed in on goals. Brian Noble scored on a pass from Jamie Lever, Chris Urie netted one from linemates Gallant and Thompson. The next three were all unassisted, guess the referee got tired watching (sorry Larry). Goals went to Gallant, Romano and Tupah with a shot from the point. Scott Page completed the 9 - 2 score with assists going to Noble and Lever. The third period was scoreless scoreless for the Toros but they only allowed one goal against. Thursday Night League Checkers Minor Atoms Tie Pickering Nov. 8 League play featured a scoring barrage by Bowmanville Bowmanville Golf, as they downed first place Hunt's Photography Photography by a 7 to 4 count. Leading the way for Golf was Barry Oliver, notching two markers in the contest to spark his teammates to a five goal third period. Wade Preston, (two), Jan Bennett, Pete Krukkert, and Ralph Cryderman also scored for Golf, assists going to Mark Slemon (three), Krukkert (two), Preston, Bennett, Cryderman, Rowe, and Oliver. Replying for Hunt's were Paul Reid, Paul Bedard, John Hogarth, and Mark Berney. Assists went to A1 Brunt, Reid, Bedard, and Hogarth. Game Two winners, Norm Caruana's Deli Hawks, resplendent in new Chicago pattern uniforms, hammered four third period markers by Castle Hotel to run the final score to 6 - 3. Stan Konarowski's hard nosed style paid dividends as he managed four points on two goals and two assists for the Hawks; Dan Ross (two), Steve Carey, and Neil Jones also found the range. Assisting on Hawk goals were Dave Brown ( two), Mike Adams, Ross, Don Smith, and Stan Greenham. Castle Hotel, once again playing short staffed, ran out of gas in the third period. Castle scores were by Bill Sainsbury, from Hawes and Knox, Chris Dwyer, from Simpson and Wilbur, and Dwayne Major, assisted by Kevin Wilbur. Game Three was a 6 - 4 victory for Brothers Pizza, as Town Sports could not counter the fast breaks and pinpoint passing game of the Pizza crew. George Bowen scored three for Brothers, including the winner. John Conboy, Bill Hogarth, and Doug Leddy also scored, assists were carded by Jerry Leddy, Doug Rickard, Hogarth, Bowen, Grant Brock, Tom Laingmaid, and Bruce Osborne. Jeff Vyfschaft in the Pizza net was beaten by Gary Dusseldorp, Don Daigle; Bob Jones, and Sandy Brown. Dusseldorp, Tim Ball, Mark Mathews, Bob Jones, and Brown assisted. Three Brothers Pizza got solid two way efforts from Randy Maslcrson, Tom Laingmaid, Grant Brock, and Bill Hogarth to hold Town Sports in check. Jon Rowe set a new league record for goalies as he appeared in parts of all three contests, and earned an assist as well. Next week's action features Castle Hotel vs Three Brothers Pizza in game One, Hunt's Photography vs Norm's Deli Hawks in game two, and Town Sports vs Bowmanville Golf in game Three. Pickering completely completely out hustled Bowmanville Bowmanville in the second by scoring three goals and five more in the third. Pickering won the game 9 -1, handing the Toros their biggets set back to date. It was a learning experience, both on and off the ice. On Saturday evening, the team travelled to Orono for an exhibition game at the Orono arena against the Orono club, made up of nine and 10 year olds. Both teams skated and played hard throughout the game, with Orono winning a squeaker 3 - 2, Orono getting the winning goal with 40 seconds left in the game. Bowmanville's hard luck player was goalie Jamie "Caboose" Doyle, who made numerous saves, despite the loss. Summary of the game - 1st period no score, 2nd period Orono (one) T. Lomax (G. Hooper). Bell Bantams Avenge Loss with 6-2 Victory As the season progresses, the fate of the Bell Boys Major Bantam Toros takes many strange turns. On Thursday, Nov. 8 the Toros travelled to Pickering Village to avenge the 4 - 2 loss of the previous Saturday. And avenge they did as the Bell Boys skated off with a well earned 6 - 2 win. The game started a little sluggish but steady goalkeeping goalkeeping by Darrin Bunker held the boys until they finally found the mark at 6:18 of the first, Guy Freeman from Kevin Flintoff and Mark Tripp. In the second period, solid defence emerged behind Troy Harness, Troy Neill, Brill Cole, Mike Kane, Albert Big Canoe and Jeff Laird, and Ihe forwards finally put it together together and polled two quick ones from Mark Tripp assisted assisted by Kevin Flintoff, and Kevin Flintoff from Guy Freeman, But before Ihe encl of Ihe period Pickering found the mark to draw within two. In the third an exchange of goals before Bowmanville finally put it away for good. Goals for the Bell boys were scored by Troy Harness unassisted, Rob Real unassisted unassisted and Mark Tripp from Guy Freeman. On Saturday, Nov. 10 the Bell boys faced Uxbridge but once again came out on the short end of a 4 - 3 score, Once again solid goal, this time by Burke Lush was the order of the day before Kevin Flintoff, unassisted, put the Toros ahead. With this slim lead, the Bell boys fell asleep and awoke to find themselves down 3 - 1 before Albert Big Canoe from Brad Carnegie exchanged goals with Uxbridge Uxbridge to end Ihe second period. In the third, Mark Tripp capped off a nice play from Kevin Flintoff and Guy Freeman to pull within one but despite a gallant effort, the Bell boys were unable to draw even and sent Uxbridge home with their second win over them this season.
