Children from the area have been enjoying a four week long Christmas Crafts program at the Waverley Public School in Bowmanville, Bowmanville, sponsored by the YWCA. , Under the direction of instructor instructor Heather Morton and her assistant Debbie Niklaus the children, ages 8-12, have made Christmas tree decorations and stuffed stuffed felt toys to be enjoyed by family and friends over the holidays. Enrolment is down this year, to 9 participants from 16. Elizabeth Peacock, the YWCA's Coordinator of Publicity, is hoping for a better turnout for programs beginning in January. Watch for Lucky Santa Parade Buttons • i. ~ ar -- f --- i The Bowmanville Santa Claus Parade Buttons were distributed to various stores throughout town last Friday morning. The money that is raised in button donations will go toward supporting the parade, now in its 23rd year. Those people who own "lucky buttons" can turn them in at 1:30 the day of the parade (November 17th) at the four corners. Winners will receive a $10 gift certificate redeemable at participating stores. Workshop Completes High Ground Performances The Bowmanville Drama Workshop has just completed a successful production production of the Charlotte Hastings drama, High Ground. The three-act play takes place in a convent located in England during 1947. It was performed at Bowmanville High School Auditorium November 8, 9, and 10. The cast, in order of appearance was: Christine Thompson, Elaine Van Zanten, Anna Blake, Brad Brooks, Cathy Haick, Randy Alldread, Judy Bagshaw, Scott Kelly, Sharon Thompson, Irene Bennett, and Doreen Cripps. H. Bradley Principal The Durham Elementary Teachers Association (DETA) will hold professional development development workshops for elementary elementary school teachers Wed., Nov. 14. The workshops will deal with a wide range of subjects, from curriculum development to computer use, physical science to physical education. There will be 33 workshop choices for elementary teachers in the morning, and 38 in the afternoon. The range of choices is designed to meet the needs of teachers offering a wide variety of services to Durham students. In addition, there are 30 workshops organized by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) open to elementary elementary school teachers. The CEC workshops offer the regular classroom teacher a chance to explore new means of effectively reaching each child, whether slow or gifted. The workshops are offered by teachers and consultants from Durham and other boards of education. The day is paid for by the teachers themselves. The keynote speakers for the day will be Bruce Mather, Durham's Director of Education, Education, who will talk about the pursuit of excellence in education, education, and Jean Harrison, who will discuss the effects of stress. The Nov. 14 activities are part of a board-wide professional professional development day involving involving approximately 2,400 Durham elementary and secondary school teachers. A publishers display of new books and other teaching aids will be held as part of the day's activities at R. S. McLaughlin CVI in Oshawa. The day's workshops include: include: Curriculum development development - grades seven - 12; Computer Art; Improving Student Evaluation in English and History; Career Changes for the 80s and how to set up a Career Awareness Day; Mathematics - Math Anxiety - Women in Mathematics; The Three R's and Play, Children Growing and Learning. The PD Day will also include include two teacher tours, to the McMichael Canadian Collection Collection in Kleinberg and to the Commodore Business Machines Education Centre in Scarborough. The theme of this year's board-wide PD Day is "We Make Us Better" - our teachers' way of saying they know the importance of professional professional growth through the exchange of ideas amohg educators.
