During the past six years, Newcastle Environment Watchers has maintained a recycling depot. Because we were a small group of volunteers we were unable to bring recycling to people's doorsteps. After meeting with the Durham Recycling Centre during the past six months, we welcome their expansion into Bowmanville. During the transitional period we will continue to maintain our recycling depot at the Goodyear parking lot on Saturdays between 10 a.m. and lp.m. At this time we would like to express our appreciation to: 1. Lawn Bowling As Morgan Lunney once said, we thought we had Norm Smith signed to a no cut no clause contract, yet lo and behold, here he is heading out for another winter of balmy weather in Florida. Lawn bowling news is a little on the skimpy side with our season winding down to a close. Four teams of trebles went to Whitby last Sunday, Sept. 9th. Pete Bathgate, Norm Smith and Rena Bathgate Bathgate comprised one team. Oscar Wollstein, Doris Woll- stein and Vi Coole made up another team; Bryan Hughes, Marg Nicks, and Harold Bennett were a third team, while the 4th team consisted of Ab Mavin, Mabel Mavin and Helen Millson. The afternoon was started off with a "Spider", where all the bowlers gather around the outside of the green and bowl, one bowl in the direction of a Jack or some other object on the green. This event was won by our own Bryan Hughes, who was awarded a Whitby Club pin for his efforts. We did not get the actual scores for this event but do know that Norm Smith's team won both games and received second prize. Ab and Mabel Mavin were celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary and it looked like the 45 years had taken its toll, because no matter what Mabel and Helen did as regards regards getting shots in, Ab would nonchalantly take them out and give the points to the opposing team. Following the two 12 end games the Whitby ladies served served corn and hot dogs which were immensely enjoyed by all present. Incidentally the overall winner was Len Weekes of Whitby and the tournament was the Annual Marigold Invitational tournament tournament with teams from Port Perry, Bowmanville and Whitby.
