C hildren Enjoy Variety at Toy Lending Library by Catherine Denny Why is it that when you finally finally buy the most expensive expensive toy in the department store, the one that all the kids on the block have had for weeks, your child still insists on borrowing the neighbour's? Perhaps kids, like adults, get more enjoyment out of playing with toys that aren't really their own. This is part of the philosophy behind the Toy Lending Library located at Trinity Church in Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Similar to a book library, library, the toy library has a great selection and variety of toys for children to choose. The system works on a membership basis which costs $15 dollars per year for one child and $5 dollars for any additional children in the family. This is an extremely low rate when you consider the amount and quality of the toys being offered, all of which cater to different educational levels. The money to purchase the toys for the library comes from donations, fund raising campaigns, such as bake sales and rallys; and from the price of membership membership cards. Most of the games and pastimes at the Toy Library are designed for kids five years old and under who are invited to remain at the church and play with the other children. They may also take the playthings home with them for a maximum of two weeks. Pat Limebeer, organizer of the program for the past three years, feels that the children's library serves a worthwhile purpose. "It gives children a chance to play with popular toys before you go out and buy them and later realize that kids didn't enjoy them all along," Mrs. Limebeer explained. She went on to say that coming to the library every week gives children a taste of social atmosphere. It allows allows them to meet young people their own age and learn how to get along with them. Last year over 50 families took advantage of the five- year-old Toy Libary. And this year Pat is pleased to note that there have al ready been an increased number of newcomers to the program which just opened it's doors Tuesday morning for the fall session. Anyone wishing to join, is encouraged to bring their child to the second floor of Trinity United Church on Tuesdays between 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Your membership membership is valid until the middle of June when the club breaks for summer. They resided at Maple Grove for forty eight years, moving to Bowmanville two years ago. In 1916 Mr. Campbell Campbell enlisted in the Black Watch in Montreal. He was in training camp in England on the 9th of April 1917 so was not present at the capture of Vimy Ridge, but served with the 13th Battalion of the Black Watch C.E.F. on the Vimy Ridge and Lens front in 1917. He was wounded at Passchen- dale on the 5th day of Nov. 1917. On his return to civilian life Mr. Campbell was an inspector inspector and milk tester with the Dept, of Agriculture for 35 years. Mrs. Campbell taught school in eastern Ontario in Bowmanville and the Courtice area. They have three daughters Margaret of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Christena (Mrs. Murray Tighe) Bowmanville and Catharine (Mrs. Elmer Higgins) Cranbrook, B.C. They also have eleven grandchildren grandchildren and 10 great grand .children. Over 50 families belonged to the Toy Lending Library last year and it is anticipated that more members will join this year. This new type of library system located at Trinity United Church gives the children a wide variety of toys to play with in the centre and allows them to sign out their favorite playthings just like a grown-up library.
