Specialist (Agriculture) 4-11 ACHIEVEMENT DAY RESULTS FROM DURHAM CENTRAL FAIR September 7th was Achievement Day for the Durham East 4-H Dairy Clubs, as well as the Wesleyville, Solina, Tyrone and Maple Grove Horticulture Clubs. The fair was., also, the site for the Champion Livestock Showmanship Competition and the 4-H Sheep Club's Market Lamb Show and Sale. The top Junior Dairy Showman was Glenn Barkey of R.R. 2, Blackstock, followed by Geof Sikma, Faith Benschop and Howard Sikma. The first place Senior Showman was Anne-Marie Hoogeveen of Blackstock, followed by Sharyn Barkey, Elaine Barkey and John Snowden. Debra Van Camp had the first place 83-84 Junior Heifer; Glenn Barkey 2nd; Howard Sikma 3rd and Grace Prins 4th. The first place '83 Junior Heifer was Sharyn Barkey; second and third went to Jay Van Camp and Geof Sikma. Anne-Marie Hoogeveen had the top Intermediate Calf and Overall Champion, with Wilma Benschop - second; Elaine Barkey 3rd and Krista McHolm 4th; Brian Goulding - first place Guernsey with Shelley Holliday 2nd. Also participating in the show were Pauline Beckett, John Buma, Rene Heeringa, Teresa Heeringa, David Tamblyn, Simon Buma, Bob Hoogeveen, Todd Pedwell, and Sheryl Snowden. The Clubs would like to express their thanks to this year's dairy leaders for a job well done! Leaders; Neil Allin, George Sikma, Dave Larmer and John DeVries. 4-H HORTICULTURE CLUB ACHIEVEMENT DAY There were many excellent 4-H Horticulture exhibits at the fair. The Solina Soil Samplers had entries from Michelle Gray, Teresa Heeringa, Rene Heeringa, Sheryl Snowden, Natalie Koczulab, Elaine Barkey, Sharyn Barkey and Susan Hattie. From the Tyrone 4-H Horticulture Club, Faith Benschop, Shannon Cornish, Carolynn Craig, Pam Dellaas, Nancy Pleasance, Elaine Smith, Cathy and Debbie Eisan all had entries. The Wesleyville 4-H Horticulture Club was represented by: Susie Reinstra and Diana Stephenson. The Maple Grove Seedlings planted themselves at the fairgrounds with displays from Kelly Brown, Cathy and Dorthy Dakin, Annette and Pam McQuigge, Lisa VanHemmen, Terry Wellman and Anita Prescott. Leaders from these 4-H Horticulture clubs were: Phyllis Clark and Lois Boyko of R.R. 3, Port Hope,d Helen Wotten and Cindy Ashton of R. R. 1, Hampton; Rita Bedford and Anne Pleasance of R. R. 5, Bowmanville; Mary Ann Found of R.R. 2, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, and Ruth Geddes of R.R. 6, Bowmanville. Thank you ladies for helping 4-H "grow" here in Durham East. DURHAM EAST l-II CHAMPIONSHIP LIVESTOCK SHOWMANSHIP COMPETITION In the Champion Livestock Showmanship Competition, Deb Van Camp emerged the winner with Sharyn Barkey a close 2nd. Sharyn had the top score for Dairy Showmanship, Brian Goble the top beef score and Tim Davidson the top sheep score. Unfortunately, this year did not feature swine showmanship, as I refused to gel down on my hands and knees as a substitute, when the pigs didn't show up at the fairgrounds on time. Sorry folks... next year for sure! MARKET LAMB SHOW and SALE NOT TOO B-A-A....D! The day wound up with an excellent show of market lambs by the Durham East 4- H Sheep Club. The top 3 Iambs were those of Deb. Van Camp, Jeff Caswell and Shelley Holliday respectively. The auction went well with Tim Davidson's lamb bringing the highest prices, bought by the Ledo Sheep Company. Our thanks to all the buyers who supported the sale. In all, it was an enjoyable day at the fair with good weather and great participation participation by all the 4-H members. Maple Grove W.I. September 10th was the first fall meeting of the W.I. held in C.E. Hall at 8 p.m. with several 4-H girls and mothers present. Meeting opened with the singing of "The Ode" and the repeating of the Lord's Prayer in unison. The Roll Call was "An Old Family Custom." The "Good Neighbors" report was given by Mrs. G. Swallow. Mrs. R. Bubar, Mrs. T. Kelsey and Mrs. E. Wihlidal as Branch Directors will bring the new guidelines for Good Neighbors up to date. Our summer outing to Cullen Barns was enjoyed by 13 members and husbands on August 14th. Mrs. S. Found reported on plans for our Bicentennial Cook Book and asked for more recipes in some categories. Our District Fun Fair will be held at Solina on October 18th. Mrs. S. Found and Mrs. J. Geddes were leaders of the Junior Summer Course on "Horticulture." The girls had their display of flower arrangements, vegetable trays and collection of weeds on display. These had been a display at Orono Fair and all girls had won prizes. The Fall Project is "Fitness Fare" and the leaders will be Mrs. T. Kelsey and Mrs. R. Bubar. Our delegate to the area convention in Toronto on October 30th and 31st will be Mrs. W. Brown. Collection and Pennies for Friendship were taken. Mrs. R. Metcalf, Convenor of Cultural Activities, was in charge of the following program: Mrs. Metcalf commented on the motto "The Why of W.I.," The W.I. was formed because of a need, a mother's concern about the death of her child from contaminated milk. The W.I. has done any things for members and their families. They show caring and kindliness kindliness and women learn to mix and mingle and learn to speak up. Through W.I. we have our boys and girls 4-H Homemaking Agriculture Club and Tweedsmuir Histories of our communities. She said, "we'd better tell others about our W. I. for a better tomorrow. It takes time, effort, research and energy to give a higher profile of our meeting..." Mrs. S. Found, leader of the summer 4-H Project 'Horticulture', introduced several girls from the club. The girls told of their meetings where they learned of weeds and plants and soil tests done of their gardens, They had visited Mrs. A. Barnes, who showed them flower arranging, visited Cullen Gardens and Rekker Gardens where they discussed landscapping. Mrs. Metcalf showed slides, gave a commentary on W.I. slides from across Ontario, showing various places of interest. W.I. women at work at fairs, quilting etc. These included some slides from one of our members Mrs. W. Laird. These slides had been prepared for the Bicentennial and show at the F.W.I.G. convention in Vancouver in June, 1983. The meeting closed with the repeating of the "Collect" in unison and the singing of O'Canada. Mrs. Metcalf and her group served sandwiches, pickles and relishes, tea and coffee during the social hour. The October W.I. meeting will be held on October 15th in C.E. Hall at 8 p.m. with Blackstock W.I. as our guests. Mrs. W Polak, Public Relations Convenor will be in charged the meeting. Mrs. W.
