On Saturday morning at Solina's new ball field, Orono and Solina Novice girls battled for the softball championship trophy. All season long it has been neck and neck every time these two teams have met and this was no exception. Solina finished their half of the final 7th inning one goal ahead 21- 20, but it wasn't enough. The Orono girls tied it and then went ahead to win the title. Kendal won the first game of the series but lost the second last Wednesday night in Oshawa 12 - 2. Keith Powell pitched a strong game on Wednesday night and Gary Carroll took control on Thursday night to give Oshawa the win. Oshawa scored 10 runs in the first inning and coasted to the win. Beginning on September 5th, a three week, six session session course will be held at the Whitby Public Library from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday and Friday mornings. No registration fees will be charged for this initial pilot program. In the Junior division, Kelly Mathews leads David Hancock by 10 shots, while Robin Pearce and Mike Kane hold the lead in the Juvenile and Bantam sections. The final round of the championship will be held September 8th. TYKES IN PLAYOFFS -- The Bowmanville Memorial Park Tykes will be playing in the Ontario Baseball Finals after two solid victories victories against Streetsville on the weekend. On Saturday, the Tykes defeated Streetsville 25-4. Then on Sunday in Bowmanville, the Tykes won the series with a 18-10 victory. The Tykes will now prepare for the finals to be held in Bolton during the long weekend in September. (at Jocelyn), Port Hope Tykes Advance To Ontario Baseball Finals The Bowmanville Tyke All- Stars had to play a best-of- three series with Streetsville in order to determine who would advance to the All- Ontario Championships. In Streetsville on Saturday, they soundly whipped the home team 26 - 4 with superb pitching by Jason Kiely followed followed by Scott Miller in the 6th. Catcher Mike Flynn did his usual good with some excellent excellent plays by infielders Darren and Glen Keates, Brendan Donohue and Jason Crosbie, and good fielding by the outfielders. Catcher Mike Flynn led the hitting barrage with a triple and five singles, Jason Kiely hit two doubles and two singles, David Real had four singles with Brendan Donohue and Darren Keates each with two singles. Jason Crosbie had a double and a single, Martin d'Entremont hit a triple and Ian Aida a single. Back in Bowmanville on Sunday, Scott Miller led off the pitching followed by Jason Kiely in the third inning to defeat Streetsville 18 -12. While Streetsville led in the scoring, Bowmanville's batters batters managed to tie the game and then surge ahead with catcher Mike Flynn's four singles, Jason Kicly's first home run and a single, Jason Crosbic's two singles and a triple, with Brendan Donohue and David Real eacli hitting two singles.
