6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 8,1984 TYRONE NEWS (Intended for last week) Sometimes the local community news column gets squeezed out of the Statesman by volume of events, but last week the Tyrone news did not get sent in because we took a motor trip to Manitoulin Island. Aunt Mar and Uncle Wim vanEijk, from Woerdcn, Holland, accompanied us through the beautiful near north, driving on to the island at Little Current after touching Sudbury, getting a bird's eye view of the new Science North structure. Manitowaning was easy to find on Highway 6, a quiet town with a village atmosphere and a peaceful vista of distant hills beyond the water of Manitowaning Bay. Actually the peace was temporarily displaced by the Lions Club "Summerfest '84" fun and midway. There is plenty of historic interest in close proximity. The famous colorful Indian Pow-Wow at Wikwemikong takes place on the weekend of August 3,4,5, while Manitoulin Island celebrates 'Haweater Days." Haweater is the name given to a native born Manitoulin Island person. The Hawberry bush provides berries which make a nice mild jelly with a gentle, subtle flavor. Hawberry ice cream cones are cooling in the context of the surroundings. Getting back to our visit, the church bell peels atop Knox United Church, next door to the manse, at two intervals on Sunday morning before service at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Dawn Vaneyk drives directly to another church service at Tehkummah about 20 miles distant after the Knox Church service. In the evening South Baymouth holds its service in a little church which is polished to as brilliant a sheen as the former two equally well appointed sanctuaries. We relunctantly left the world's largest freshwater island aboard the 'Chi-cheemaun' ferry at South Baymouth, bound for Tobermory, a pleasant boat trip across the main channel between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, mid-day on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gibbs earned 24 first prizes with their horticultural entries at Oshawa Fair, July 19-22nd, which happily seems to be climbing back to its former population which it enjoyed before being moved out of the city. Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs' roadside flower garden is a great splash of color of pas- sersby on the seventh concession. Mrs. Elsie Roy and Mrs. Mary Payne, Seagrave accompanied Mrs. Minnie Harper, Port Perry Nursing Home, to visit Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gibbs, and enjoyed the multitude of varieties of summer flowers in the Gibbs' garden. There certainly are a great many interesting events taking place this bicentennial year. The Tall Ships' visit to Oshawa Harbor was an interesting experience recently, complete with the opportunity to walk on board and allow one's imagination to conjure limitless adventure. Last week's euchre attracted over 18 tables of players. 1st Robin Alldred, 2nd Clarence Woodley, 3rd Ethel Goble, 4th Bertha White, 5th Clarence Bell, 6th Nancy Wright.
