My name is Scott Maxwell and my parents are Lisa and Russ. I have just celebrated my first birthday. Proud grandparents are Charlie and Diana Green and Betty and Russ Maxwell. z Byline... By Peter Parrott When you break the law of gravity, the penalty penalty is paid in stitches, cuts, bruises, and fractures. fractures. That's what happened happened about a, week and a half ago when a: freak bicycle accident 1 sent me over the handlebars handlebars and into the emergency ward of Memorial Hospital. The damage includes about a ten or twelve stitches, one broken nose, a chipped finger, and assorted scrapes and scratches from my forehead to knees. Of course, it's not just the pain and suffering to get used to. It's also a matter of wearing facial facial bandages that make one look like an extra from a Grade B horror movie. One tends to stand out in a crowd. Then, there are the jokes about getting into a fight with one's wife. Jokes about whether I should have asked Mommy and Daddy for a two-wheeler. Jokes about whether or not the injury will affect my nose for news, I think I've heard them all and possibly invented a few new ones. Walking out of the suture suture room with more patches and stitches than a country quilt, I still had the feelingthat maybe I was lucky after all. For one thing, no Trucks! Trucks! Trucks! Whitby "T* MAJOR MOTION 668-6828 FROM NISSAN teeth were lost and there were no skull injuries. injuries. They x-rayed my head and found nothing, nothing, as another old joke goes. I guess the worst part about this kind of injury injury is haying to explain explain it to everybody who sees the damage for the . first time. They're fascinated, of course. But for the victim victim who has discussed the mishap in detail a hundred times already, the topic starts to wear rather thin. How did it happen? is the most common question. question. I wish there were a dramatic answer to that one. But, in fact, it is the kind of mishap which happens through stupid mistakes. I wasn't swerving to avoid a truck, nor did I have a car door opened in front of me in heavy traffic. I was almost home from a relatively long ride. I had momentarily lost my concentration and suddenly the front wheel swerved abruptly abruptly on a patch of gravel. Next thing I knew, I was flying to an unhappy landing in the dirt. Ever notice how it is that when something like that happens to you, it seems to occur in slow-motion. I think I can remember every tumble as I run the incident incident through my mind on instant replay. The moral of the story? Well, I'd always known that a bike is a dangerous instrument which must be handled with more precision and more care than a car. Although it moves in the low range of the typical traffic speed, it offers no protection to the rider. Furthermore, it is often overlooked by drivers of cars who either fail to sec bikes or fail to understand matters such as the speed at which they arc moving. All of these things 1 knew, of course. But now, I won't forget. It's the moment when you least expect it that an accident often occurs. Heart Fund Exceeds 1984 Campaign Goal Once again, the "Canadian "Canadian Heart Fund", Ontario Division, has exceeded its financial campaign objective. objective. The 1984 "Heart Fund" campaign conducted during during February in Ontario went over its objective of $9,050,000 by $10,500. In releasing the final results, results, Patrick T. Johnson, 1984 "Heart Fund" chairman, chairman, expressed the deep gratitude of the organization organization to the thousands of donors and volunteer canvassers canvassers across the Province who helped put the "Fund" over the top. For the past 30 years, the Ontario Heart Foundation, which administers the money collected by the "Heart Fund", has supported supported research into heart disease and results of this research have benefitted many. As the results of this research unfolded, it became became evident that there was a co-relation between heart disease and stroke. Realizing the similarities of cause between heart disease disease and stroke and the need for more vital research research in both areas, the Foundation decided to change its name to the "HEART AND STROKE FOUNDATION OF ONTARIO". ONTARIO". The change is effective effective immediately. The new name clearly enunciates the Foundation's Foundation's Intention of expanding expanding in the area of stroke, and it reflects and creates an awareness of this combined role. Through this name change, an awareness will be created for the public which will demonstrate the Foundation's involvement as a combined effort to produce produce a unified approach to raising more money, to support support more research, that will utlimately save more lives. It's nice to know that when you ido a cartwheel on a| bicycle! like I did, there's a place where compassionate compassionate professionals can ease the pain, close the wounds, and generally generally put you on the road to recovery. If all this sounds a little little dramatic, perhaps it's because it happens to be my first (and, hopefully, my only) major accident. When it first happened, I was afraid afraid I'd end up with plastic surgery and the need to wear a bag over my head for the next six months. Actually, the injury probably isn't much worse than a professional professional football player faces three or four times a season. Now that the stitches are out and the swelling has subsided, I can actually actually look at myself in the mirror again and drink from a glass rather than a straw. So, I'd just like to thank all those who helped put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
