Charlene Austin was one of those going into grade 8 with an excellent record on all phases of her grade 7 year, but she started her holiday on an unfortunate note when she suffered an accident on Saturday morning. Her hand was caught in some way when unloading her horse for pony club. The cut required several stitches at the hospital, and we do hope this painful injury will heal quickly. Church service for the Welcome charge was held at Dorothy's House museum on Sunday, July 1st with Rev. Gordon Rutherford in charge. Next service will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Currelly with Rev. Rex Norman the visiting minister. Several from the area attended the strawberry tea at Dorothy's House on Saturday and enjoyed this delicious fruit in lovely surroundings. Those in charge of this place have spent a great deal of time keeping the grounds beautiful, and they have a fine backdrop of many shades of green in the trees surrounding the flower beds. There are at least two kinds of spruce, white and scotch pine, hemlock, cedar, poplar as well as shrubs. Mrs. Hazel Tufford returned home from Peterborough Hospital on Friday and is well on her way to recovery after a severe illness. We hope she is able soon to resume normal activities. Kay Thorndyke too has been plagued ' with one of those summer colds which seem to resist all remedies. Kay was in Toronto last week for tests and we hope the difficulty can be cleared up. Mr. and Mrs. Herb Moorcraft of Bowmanville visited with friends here last week. Shelley Payne of Toronto was home for the weekend with her parents, Murray and Jean Payne. Brian and Sharon Edey and family of Bowmanville visited with the Thorndykes on Sunday. Weather has been perfect for the past few days for all the activities planned for the three anniversaries. Each year the people of Port Hope and area enjoy their unique Caiithumpian parade and each year shows a crop of new creations. It is a day of pleasure for those who put effort into making it a success and for those who just watch. Besides the fireworks provided at night, there are others which may be enjoyed if you can find a spot away from too much electric light. Turn out the house lights and watch the display from your window. On these last clear nights, high overhead the sky is alight with stars, big and small. Occasionally one tiny one moves quickly, winking its way across your line of vision. No star, but a plane so high its coloured lights do not show and nearer the earth the fireflies put on their spectacular show. Like the stars some are much brighter than others and fly all sorts of patterns through the air. These days all the young fry of the bird world are making their presence felt, especially grackles whose great numbers are boding ill for small berry patches.
