Finlay, Agricultural Representative RED MEAT DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES ANNOUNCED Agriculture Minister, Dennis Timbrell, has announced announced the"details of a Red Meat Initiative Program to create a more efficient production base for the beef and sheep industry industry in Ontario. A. Red Meats Research Fund - A red meat research fund is proposed with initial funding of $1 million under the Agricultural Research Institute Institute of Ontario. Projects for approval and funding would be recommended by the Red Meat Development and Coordinating Coordinating Committee. Additional Additional funding will be sought from the private sector to continue this fund. B. Cow-Calf Development: Program Components: 1. Beef Herd Improvement Program Eligible producers will be enrolled in a Beef Herd Improvement Program (BHIP), which will record management information to provide standards of performance, performance, and be required to join in local improvement clubs. Upon receipt of a weighing record producers will receive $25 per weaning weight and $20 per yearling weight for heifers. Weights will be used to provide farmers with results results on the efficiency of their production system, and thé efficiency of individual animals in the herd. 2. Capital facilities: A grant of 66 and two-thirds percent with a maximum of $1,500 will be available to eligible producers producers for construction facilities facilities or purchase of equipment listed below. Grants will be paid after submission of copies of receipts and inspection inspection by OMAF. Eligible facilities facilities to be built or bought after enrollment date include: materials to build handling facilities such as chutes, gates, pens and fences; scales to weigh animals and or feed; livestock watering equipment; equipment; supplies or equipment for pasture renovation; other equipment or supplies as determined by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. 3. - Herd Health Program: One hundred dollars per year will be paid to eligible producers producers who are on a veterinary veterinary supervised herd health program. The grant will be paid after the Ontario Ministry Ministry of Agriculture and Food has received verification from a veterinarian certifying that the producer is part of the program. 4. Certified Preconditioned Calf Program: The Ministry will supply unique ear tags for each calf certified by a veterinarian. veterinarian. Five dollars will be paid to the producer for each calf preconditioned on receipt of the veterinarian's certificate certificate or a copy of his receipts indicating the number of calves certified and tagged. 5. Forage Testing: A producer producer can elect to receive two free forage analysis annually. 6. Enterprise Analysis: One hundred dollars per year will be paid to producers who supply annual records in an approved format to the Ministry for use by OMAF for enterprise analysis records. Ministry staff will be available available for consultation on request. request. 7. County Club Weigh Scales: OMAF will provide county or regional cow-calf clubs with mobile scales for use in county weighing programs. programs. 8. Identification Tags: To encourage record keeping and performance measurement, eligible producers will be supplied with standardized free tags to identify their cows and calves, if requested. Duration: These programs will be available to eligible producers until they have reached their personal maximums or until March 31, 1989. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA To be eligible for assistance under the above programs, producers must: 1. Have principal residence in Ontario and be a land owner; or 2. Have principal residence in Ontario and leases land to a beef farmer, who meets all other criteria, or is the lessee of land for beef farming. The lessee must have a written lease from the owner. 3. Be a regular participant in a local beef cow-calf improvement club, 4. Participate in the Beef Herd Improvement Program, 5, Have 10 calves born within a 90-day period. 0. Have principal residence in Ontario and leases land to a beef,farmer, who meets all other criteria, or is the lessees of land for beef farming. The lessee must have a written lease from the owner. 3. Produce $10,000 in value of beef production and-or have 50 animals on feed for a minimum minimum of 60 days in an average year. 4. Membership in local Management Analysis Clubs and submission of weights to OMAF will be compulsory. SHEEP DEVELOPMENT Program Components : Compulsory Sheep Flock Efficiency Plan - Producer must identify all sheep in flock. - Lamb weights are to be taken about 50 and 100 days by district or county weighman. - Weights submitted to OMAF for processing and issue of report on adjusted weights, average daily gain, lamb index and ewe index. - Reports to be used for selecting flock replacements and culling. - One dollar to be paid for each record processed in first four years. - Participation compulsory if options desired. 1. Estrus Control: Fifty percent of cost of vaginal sponges and pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin to a maximum of $4 per ewe will be paid to producers on receipt receipt of a copy of bills. 2. Pregnancy Examination: A grant will be available towards towards the cost of pregnancy determination. 3. Handling Facilities: A grant of up to 50 percent of the cost of facilities listed below to a" maximum of $5,000 after submission of receipts and inspection by OMAF. - Eligible facilities built or bought after enrollment date include: - Materials to build handling facilities such as chutes, gates, pen, fences and "simple structures." - Scales to weigh animals and - or feed. - Supplies or equipment for pasture renovation. - Other equipment or supplies as determined by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. 4. Forage Testing: A producer producer can elect to receive one free forage analysis annually. 5. Grant for Flock Health Program: Fifty percent of the cost to a maximum of $5 per head of vaccines and parasite control medications will be paid by OMAF on receipt of copies of veterinarian bills documenting purchases. 6. Lamb Grading: A grant of one dollar per head will be paid on receipt of letter documenting documenting animals graded by an impartial recognized grader. 7. Enterprise Analysis: One hundred dollars per year will be paid to producers who supply annual records in an approved format to the Ministry Ministry for use by OMAF for enterprise analysis. Eligibility Requirements: - Farm sheep production unit must have a minimum of 15 breeding ewes. - Must enroll on the flock home test program. - Any new ram used to the flock must have an official performance index of 100 or greater. - To participate in the grant for handling facilities and fences a producer's flock must consist of a minimum of 40 breeding ewes. - Must have an approved scale.
