(TIk (Canadian Statesman Section Two Wednesday, June 13,1984 MWI Grand Opening of Solina's New Park Solina Park's opening ceremonies were preceded by a decorated bicycle parade that attracted many entries. Hère are a few of them. The official ribbon cutting ceremony at Solina's and Matt Dyck plus civic and local officials, 1-r expanded and renovated playground and park Councillor Bruce Taylor, MPP Sam Cureatz, facility took place beneath these gates. Taking part Mayor Garnet Rickard, Councillor Ann Cowman in the ceremony were two young people Kim Werry and Ralph Clark of the local park executive. The decorated bicycle parade winners were left to right, Stephanie Moher, Steven Robbins, Cori • Gray and John Ashton. There were loads of games for the Solina folks and visitors to play and they could even have a ride on this docile pony. The general consensus was that the event was a great launching for the almost completed project. Later in the day, there was succulent food for everyone. Dave Gray was the first victim in the Solina dunking tank. He held out for quite a while, but eventually he received a good dunking and hung in there for several more before relinquishing his seat to someone else. Games of Many Kinds F eatured Tyrone Spirit Day Tyrone's annual Spirit Day attracted a large crowd at the community park where there were soccer and baseball games, races for all ages, including a sack race for two in one sack and other novelty events. One that drew many participants was the wet sponge throwing at someone's head poked through a hole in a board. There was also a crosscut saw contest that proved somewhat energetic in the heat for Susan and Dianne Woodley who still have quite a way to go through the log. LETTER TO THE EDITOR General Delivery, Bowmanville June 7,1984 Dear John: (Sort of a "dear John note") Keep a close watch on the editorial page of our fine weekly. Intended writing you re the No-nuke circus coming up. Having read Cindy Craig's letter, I am satisfied. She has said all I had to say and said it much better. I'll leave that one alone except for a verse written in 1977 which should spark some thought by now in those whom we were trying to reach before the building of the No. two station along the highway was begun. At such a low cost it would have been a bargain. No, all the protesting didn't do much good that I can see except to bring the Ministry Ministry of Environment out of mothballs where it had been in existence for a number of years without the general public being aware of its existence existence or use, My own opinion of nuclear energy for various good purposes purposes has. changed somewhat. It isn't the type of clean energy it gives that frightens us. It is the irrational use of it, the careless maintenance that might happen that is the drawback, drawback, Here we go with my bit of verse, which be it "verse and verse" I don't know or care much, it just keeps coming coming so I write it down I Wisdom From progress, from power of gold is basic value lost, .The Earth as our dominion is the cost. Still living in reflections of the past; In that dim light we move so fast, Heedless of history's blunders. Are we innocent of slow destruction, Moving forward faster with less discretion Than those who earlier built our nation, From fertile field and plain, without care Felled trees by lakes and flowing rivers, Ate fish and fowl in pure, clean air?
