The brewery is putting up $7,000 worth of cash prizes, including a first place purse of $1,500 for the men's event, in its bid to draw top cyclists. Mr. Symonds said they expect more than 100 riders to come to the town August 11 for the 50 lap, 80 km men's event, and a smaller but top calibre field for the women's race. As well, there will be short celebrity celebrity and novice races. The main event will feature top amateurs, some of them fresh from the Los Angeles Olympics, as well as professional cyclist, who are something of a rare breed in North America althought the sport grows in popularity by leaps and bounds every year. LIFE AT SEA - Harvey Kirck, who recently resigned resigned from a 20 year stint as national news anchorman anchorman on CTV, Channel 9, has his 40 foot Pilgrim Pilgrim motor launch docked at Cobourg harbor where he plans to spend a number of weeks. The Kirck's are enjoying their $100,000 boat and the harbor which is in walking distance of the Cobourg downtown. Batters for the Orioles were Ken Farrow 4 hits, Wayne Mutton 2 including a homer, Ed Bird, George Kennett, Scott Michelson, Tobin Rowe and Chris Michelson 1 hit each. Linescores: Whitby - 5 runs 7 hits 1 error; Bowmanville -11 runs 10 hits 3 errors On Sunday afternoon against Cobourg the Orioles fell behind by 4 runs twice and kept coming back Regions I Soccer News by Dick Budel Well, it had to happen sooner or later, a Newcastle Colts team lost a game. The good news was that it was another Newcastle team that beat them. The game was one involving our two Mosquito teams, Town Sports and Port of Newcastle Newcastle and was played under most unfavourable weather conditions on Monday, May 28th. The Town Sports boys, aided by strong winds, quickly jumped into a lead which they never relinquished. relinquished. This seemed to take the heart out of the Port of Newcastle boys and they ended up losing 5 - 1. I'm sure that if the weather conditions had been more normal that the score would have been closer. On Tuesday, May 29, the Virtue Fuels Pee Wees played their home-opener against Bowmanville Blizzard Blizzard and presented goalie Andy Butler with a 5 - 0 shutout. However, if the Blizzard had not hit two goalposts in the first 15 minutes, minutes, but had instead scored on these opportunities, opportunities, the game might well have gone the other way. It took the Virtue Fuels boys half a game before before they found their shooting shooting eyes, but then they scored with a vengeance. Marty Conners led the parade with 2 goals, Mike Tait added a single, as did the Vanderheyden brothers, Mark and Jan. Wednesday, May 30, goalie David Budel earned his second consecutive shutout, this time by a 5 - 0 margin over Rangers as the Kraco Contracting defense played tough. David will probably never earn an easier shutout as a tenacious tenacious defense, led by Benjamin Benjamin Vanderheyden, Dale Foster and Chris McSweeney, limited Rangers Rangers to a single shot on goal. Steven Miller took care of the offense as he scored 3 goals with John Hill and Chris McSweeney adding singles. Todd Jones also covered covered a lot of territory up front. I say unusual because the Colts scorer, Shawn Stephenson, was also the goalie when J & J tied the game in the second half. Thus he was involved involved on both sides of the scoring ledger.
